My problem is my 3 yr. old son he has tubes in for the 2nd time and just found out he has another ear infection, and the ent said he might need them again, I'm just so stressed out over this, this last time the infection he got just before he got his 2nd tubes in was so bad it lasted over a month and no meds.were helping, he was going to his pediatrician at least 2 times or more a week getting those antibiotic shots and nothing worked until finally his ears started to drain, and he got the surgery done, well I want to know if anyone has gone through this and what other choices do I have other than putting tubes in again, I don't want my son going through this pain again and I don't have the money for this procedure, my deductible is $1,500, and I don't want my son to end up getting scare tissue and end up loosing some of his hearing either, the ENT said that right now he is too young to tell if he will have to keep getting tubes in because he has not out grown this problem yet,but if he was in his 20's than yes he would have to keep getting tubes in, oh yeah he also got his adenoids taken out too, please someone help me on what else I can do for my baby?

What can I do next?

It sounds terrible what your poor baby is going through. I know how stressful it can be to feel so helpless when it comes to your babies health. I had recurring issues with asthma and ear infections with my son. He was sick for over a year without much of a break between episodes. He got tubes - which was a horrible experience and was scheduled to get them redone a year later. The day before the surgery I cancelled, because I couldn't put him through that again. Fortunately he responds to antibiotics, but I believe the major difference for my son was his diet. We switched to an organic diet and added a few supplements specific to his ailments then we tried to find any allergies through a process of elimination. Which was impossible to stick to...so we started him on accupressure....hocus pocus or not....we saw an immediate improvement. He got sick just recently with a cold so I gave him prescribed decongestant (which I am against) but I wanted to prevent an ear infection. For the first time in ages he made it through with no wheezing and I brought him to the dr. today because he was being bratty LOL, but she said he had no infection - I suppose he is a normal 2 year old. Anyway - I hope our story can help you...when science medicine isn't working or isn't necessary "alternative" can be an excellent alternative. Good luck to your baby and your family. :)

My oldest who is almost 7 has had tubes 3x and adnoids removed. My almost 2 year old is heading down the same path. She has already had the tubes once. And as for the prevnar vaccine she had that also and she still has always got a massive amount of ear infections. The tubes work for 6mo-a year but aftre then it seems they always need to be put back in. My advice is to make sure all water stays out of there ear. My hubby let my oldest go under water in the neighbors pool and we were in the er that same night for a clogged tube and an infection. I would even keep bath water out.

Hello G., my name is A. and my daughter who is now 6 has had her tonsils out, adnoids out and tubs put in. She never had ear infections until they put the tubs in but its only when she gets water in her ear.. my oh my does she scream in pain. Other then a bit of rough recovery and if she gets water in her ears she is fine. She has had them in for a year now.. ENT said that she had massive water build up near her ear drum and that is why she had a hard time hearing here and there. Well, i think she still has this problem yet they say the tubs are helping her ears to drain. We go back to the ENT soon so we will see...
I think this is a matter of what you think for your child is best. Talk not only to the ENT but also the PED to see what both viewpoints are and state your concerns with both. If they are able to sit down with you and talk and help you to understand why this is a good next step then great.. you need to trust your gut and think about long run... i'[ve heard many different stories about tubs so it boils down to gut feeling and doctors opinions. Godd luck and keep me up to date.

Dear G.,

I realize that I am responding to your request many months after you posted it, but I just became a member and wanted to reply in case it can help you in any way, or anyone else who may be reading this thread...

Have you tried Chiropractic treatment? My husband is a Chiropractor and has had much success helping kids who have acute or chronic middle ear infections. The reason why it helps is that the nerve that innervates the ears (the nerve that travels from the spinal cord to the ear) exits the spine at the level of the first cervical vertebrae (the first neck bone down from the skull). The spinal cord and spinal nerves are the means by which the brain communicates with the rest of the body. If interference exists on this nerve then the communication between the brain and the ear is less than optimal, and problems can arise (like ears which are unable to drain excess fluid, and therefore are prone to infection).

My next door neighbor (who I dearly love and admire) is a mother of 4, and her youngest (a 4 year old) was scheduled to have tubes put in his ears at the end of this month. He has a history of multiple ear infections (using antibiotics and liquid steroids to treat), mild hearing problems, and mild speech problems. She decided to bring her son to my husband as a last ditch effort to avoid the surgery. She brought him 3 times a week for 2 weeks before he was scheduled for a followup visit with his pediatrician. The pediatrician said that his ears are almost completely clear, and he had his first good hearing test since they started testing him. He had dramatic results in these clinical tests, and he is also improving behavior-wise.

There are many different Chiropractic approaches to choose from. My husband has been trained in many low-force approaches (like Network Spinal Analysis, Bio-Geometric integration, and Toffness) and he regularly treats children. My advice to you is to find someone who has a great reputation, and preferably someone who regularly treats children. The low-force techniques may be helpful for children because they are less "frightening", and may not require an actual boney adjustment, but it is certainly not required. Just find someone who is really good that you will feel comfortable placing your trust in them.

Hope that you have been able to find some help and relief for you son.

M.

Hello,

I have a three year old son and when he was 2 months old his pediatrician started giving him a vaccine called Prevnor. The nurse that gave him the injection for the first time said it was a vaccine for ear infections. I had never heard of it before nor had some other parents I know with young children. He has never had an ear infection. I myself was prone to ear infections when I was a child, so I'm assuming that the vaccine works. Ask your son's pediatrician or ENT about it and if it may be an option for him. Hope all goes well for the little guy. Take care.

Hi G.,

I am a sahm of 4 children - 2 of mine (twin, boy & girl) are now 4. They had massive ear infections all the time - My little girl (Madison) had tubes twice & her adnoids & tonsils removed - since then NO infections. My poor little boy (Kevin) has had the tubes twice & his tonsils removed, this was very hard on him & he still gets ear infections. My Ped, requested that I not allow him to swim or take showers without ear plugs. They also have this swimmers ear stuff(sold at any pharmacy), you poor into their ears when ever they have gotten them wet. It really does help. I also agree with some of the other moms, allergies can be a huge factor, my 13 year old (Nicholas)is allergic to cats, anytime he is around one, he gets an ear infection within days. So I would go to an allergist & see what he is allergic to & then try a very low dairy diet as this also is a huge trigger for many kids. I find myself blessed that my other child (paige, 10) has always been ear infection free (Never even had 1) so finding the trigger is a huge must do!!!!

Good Luck & God bless -
Hope your baby gets better fast!!!!

Hi G.,

I'm a SAHM of a 3 year old and a 13 year old, too! I was going to suggest allergy testing or doing some research regarding allergy issues in your home (ie carpeting, animals, stuffed animals, etc...). That could possibly aleve some of the congestion issues that lead to infections. Also, try the children's Claritin to dry him up without making him sleepy. According to my ENT/Allergy doctor (yes, my kids have issues, too) everyone in Florida reacts to something due to the humidity and all the different types of plants pollinating at different times. Your son's tolerance to antibiotics and his hearing are at stake! I did see an ad for a natural specialist in the Lake Mary area or someone in that genre who might be able to help without medication. Good luck!
