Ear ache...now Loss of Hearing?

My 5 year old had an ear ache a couple weekends ago. We didn't get a chance to take her in to the doctor though because she would run around crazy and it would only hit at night. Then one night it was gone! Well now a week later she can't hear I have to practically yell just to get her attention! What do I do? Should I make an appointment to see the doctor or is this something that just needs some time?

Seriously?!

Either it's completely clogged, or the infection got so bad that it made a hole in her eardrum, or a combo of both. You NEED to get her to an ENT, not just a doctor, at this point.

YES!!! Right away! She should see a ENT. They will treat her & if necessary, they will put small tubes in her ear to drain the wax or fluid. Does she not have a fever???

Hi Athena,
It is possible that the fluid has just built up in her ear, making it difficult to hear. I would take her to a chiro right away. If her atlas (the top vertibrate) is out of alignment, then it will make her ear unable to drain, causing pain and infection. Once her neck is aligned, her ear should drain properly, making her well pretty much right away. If you have a good chiro, he/she will tell you if you need to see a specialist or if something more serious than an adjustment is needed. However, I seriously doubt that this will be the case. Blessings.

Right away!!!!!
My daughter suffered several ear infections - each was treated. One of the last ones was a severe inner ear infection, her ear drum burst and she has (what the Dr. believes at this point) permanent hearing damage!!

She probably has an ear infection that will require antibiotics to clear up. Go and have her checked by her pediatrician.

Yes! See an ENT doctor as soon as possible! I myself am going through major inner ear issues, and have gone through surgery and need more because of an ear infection that wasnt treated when I was a child.

Get her checked out to be safe, her ear might not be draining fluid properly and could be what is causing her ear ache, especially at night time.

Ummm, she should have already seen the doctor. One of my best friends went deaf from an ear infection. Yes, please take her to the doctor.

well are you going to wait until shes completely deaf before getting her on medication that she obviously needs?? i dont mean to sound crass-but common sense wouldve told you to get her in the minute she said she had an earache..what do you mean by running around crazy?? your the parent-you need to handle it.

Hello Athena, First of all, some of the responses were overreacting. I don't take my kids to the doctor for intermittent ear aches, unless they present for awhile. Our pediatrician says that most ear infections resolve on their own, but if fever is present with an ear ache, it's best to have it treated. Please don't beat yourself up. As if none of these other moms have NEVER made a parenting mistake!!!!!

That being said, you do need to take her to the doctor. My guess is that your daughter has excessive wax build up, and they can take care of that for you. Beware that they DON'T use Q-tips in your daughters ear. My friend's ear drum collapsed because a NURSE jammed a Q-tip in her ear, trying to remove wax.

My friend's daughter is 4, and she was concerned that her daughter had hearing loss as well! But it was just wax. Hang in there mama!

Make an appointment so you can know for sure if it's temporary hearing loss or not. It will be frustrating for her not to hear as well as she usually does. So any relief - be it temporary or permanent will help. I have lost about 85% of my hearing as an adult and it is very stressful. Good luck and keep us posted!

Chances are she has a build up of wax in her ear. The pressure causes pain and it does seem worse in the evenings. She probably doesn't have a broken eardrum because that is really really painful. I would take her to the doctor to make sure it isn't an inner ear infection. If it is a build up of wax or a plugged ear, my doctor told me to put a couple drops of Dawn dishwasing liquid in the ear and let it stay in there for a few minutes. Then using a bulb rinse it out and the wax should come out too. Only use the blue Dawn since there isn't anything that can harm. You do not want to dig at the ear with qtips or bobby pins. I have always had a problem with the ear wax and twice have had ruptured ear drums. I wouldn't fool around with ear aches that seem to hurt all the time. Unless you have a thing to look in the ear, you will not know if it is an infection or plugged ear.

I would definitely take her in. The same thing happened to my son a couple months ago. He never complains of pain when he has an ear infection, but then he started to lose his hearing in one ear. We took him to his ped, they tested his hearing and after looking in his ears, found thick fluid behind his eardrum which required antibiotics. After a few days, he was fine. Also, you don't need to rush her in to the doctor for every earache. As others have said, an infection usually goes away on it's own without antibiotics and it isn't good to have kids taking antibiotics all the time either. The pain can be controlled with ibuprofen or tylenol, but it doesn't really seem like it bothered her since she was still active and playing during the day. I wouldn't beat yourself up for not taking her in sooner. Yes, you can have permanent hearing damage from severe ear infections left untreated, but that is usually after multiple infections, not just one. It could also be earwax, which they can instruct you how to remove, if they don't need to do it. Good luck!

Likely fluid behind the ear...make an appointment, they do a couple simple tests for hearing and pressure. My daughter had this happen and we had a round of antibiotics and all was good. If that hadn't worked, then he would have sent us to ENT.

Loss of hearing sounds like maybe a ton of fluid on the ear or worse ... A ruptured ear drum. Bring her in right away so there is no permanent damage.

she might just be acting her age, and you are worried because of the previous ear trouble.
you can take her to the doctor for a simple and painless hearing test if you are really concerned. otherwise, she probably just needs you to walk over to her and speak to her instead of yelling. kids are just like that sometimes.
