DVD Containers, What to Do W/ Them

Hi Everyone. We have a DVD player that stores up to 500 movies so I have a bookshelf full of DVD containers. You know, those black plastic book type containers that have a paper sleeve with a picture and all the details of the movie on it. I try very hard to be environmentally conscious but I have checked those containers and they do not have the recycle symbol on them. Does anyone know how I can dispose of these things in an environmentally conscious way? Are they recyclable? I'll toss them in my recyclable bin if they are. Please help, they are taking over my house.
Thanks for your suggestions.

So What Happened?

Hi everyone. Thanks for all of your suggestions, all of which were great by the way. I have decided to pass along my containers to one of the moms in our community who was interested in them. You guys come first. Keep on doing your awesome mothering, Ladies.

I bet there is a local non-profit or other group that can use them. Why don't you list them for free on the Star-Telegram's "Come and Get It" list or on Craigslist?

I use them to help me decorate. Sounds funny. I use them on top of cabinets and book shelves for items that just need a little extra height to be seen optimally. The best part is no one knows they are there. Other than that I can’t think of another useful way to use them.

Please let me know when you get a good suggestion. I took all of my movies out of the cases and put them in cd holders so my kids could flip through the pages and choose a movie easily. I had this problem with movies never getting back in the cases and finding them everywhere. Now the problem is solved and i put the cases in a box for storage. I keep thinking that maybe down the road I will regret getting rid of them (especially the disney ones). I dont know. Any thoughts?

I second Jenay's recommendation. If you don't want to keep them, and they are not recyclable (not sure either way about that), you can list them on your local freecycle group (www.freecycle.org) and I can almost guarantee someone can use them. Someone recently offered a bunch of empty cd cases and they got a lot of responses for those. I personally have a DVD recorder so I bought this package of DVDs to record on that didn't have any cases. I eventually had to buy a package of cases to keep them in as well. The better thing to do would have been to ask for some on Freecycle but I didn't think of it at the time. Thanks for being environmentally conscious. It's sometimes the harder way to do things but so worth it! ;-)

Donate them to your public library. I work at a library and our DVD cases are always going bad from continuous use. We have to replace them quite often and that can get expensive.

L.-We have the same DVD player and the same issue! We box them up and put them in the attic. That way if you ever want to give them away to anyone, or pack them up to move or anything, you still have them.

Blockbuster or Hollywood video may have use for them. If not, list them on Craigslist and someone will definitely want them.

Hi L.. I have the same problem. I've decided to keep them though cause eventually the movies will get old and I'll give them away. ;) I'd recomment keeping them.

You might could sell them on ebay!! Get some extra cash for them or put an add in your local freecycle or free trade paper and give them to someone that could use them.

You could join www.freecycle.com (it's free) and offer them. Freecycle is an online community where the members offer up something that they no longer want, but is still useful. They ask that you offer up something first, before requesting an offer. I gave away some old picture frames and a water cooler I no longer wanted. I got some craft items and also a great breadmaker! It's a great way to get rid of stuff and get stuff! :-)

Hey there. Have you tried posting them on Craig's list?
I am sure that somebody who has "home made" cds or DVDs would probably buy them from you. If you don't want to sale them, you can post them on the "free" page.

Have a blessed day,

Just an idea, maybe you could take them to Movie Trading Company and they could re-use them. You would have to call and ask though.

If you still have them and haven't decided what to do with them yet but still want to get rid of them, I could take them from you. I guess it depends on where you are. Thanks!

I don't know if they are recyclable, but do know that you can offer them via freecycle.org...the local group's home page is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AustinFreecycle/

if you are not familiar with them, it is for this purpose...you can offer the containers and when you get a response from someone who wants them (a recording studio or home business is likely), you can tell them where they can find them...your front curb or whatever...they don't have to come up to your house.

Otherwise, you can check with the City of Austin recycling for ideas or ask Ecology Action if they will take them...they have a dropoff site near downtown (like 9th & I-35)& probably several more.

Great of you to keep these out of the landfull!

I would suggest checking with the local daycares and churches to see if they could use any or all. I am sure they have use for them in one way or another.

also, try www.freecycle.org there should be a group in your local area, sign up for the one you think would get the most traffic and you might be able to get rid of some that way as well.

good luck and TY for looking out for our environment -

I'm not sure if they are recyclable or not, but I'd post an ad for them on craigslist. You can put it in the free section and ask someone to pick them up for you (or meet them in a nuetral location for safety). People that burn back up copies of dvds or cds might like them for storage. That way they don't end up in the landfill and are getting a second life.
Hope that helps!

Does your church have a pre-school? Most schools (even church Sunday schools) that have small children can use them for photo frames or leaf and flower holders for field-trip collections.

I'm a former teacher and one of the best gifts I received one year is a mix of holiday music from one of my students. It was a little of everything and they burned copies and gave them out as presents. Not too expensive of a gift, but one I have enjoyed every Christmas for about 6 years now! Just an idea.
Or you could do a similar thing as a party favor and make a mix of kid music to pass out...you could use your cases you already have and let your kids decorate them! A different idea, but another reason to hang onto them. Once you let them go you may wish you had them back! :)

You could try and freecycle them, there are people who make home photo slide shows and movies that might could reuse them or some people just like to have them. You could try and even sale them on ebay or craigslist. I recycle everything, so I know how this feels. Good luck

Hi, L.!

What we did with our DVD containers was put them in a box and store them in the attic. You never know if you might want to sell/give away some of your DVDs someday, and it'd be nice if you had the container to put them in. Hope this helps!
