DTaP During Pregnancy

I am 34 weeks pregnant and I stepped on a nail today so my OB office told me to go get a Tetanus shot. I went to an Urgent Care clinic and asked for a Tetanus shot .... Turns out they gave me the DTaP ! The doctor said he was sorry and that there are no studies on pregnant woman recieving this shot. So I am absolutetly terrified, and I am already terrified about vaccines .... my 2 daughters have never even had the DTaP ... I only allow DT because after much research I found that the pertussis vaccine is not safe. I know some of you will disagree with that but it is my choice and the pediatrician is perfectly fine with it.

What I am curious about is have any of you had the DTaP while pregnant with no problems to baby ? I am at a loss as what to do now .... I know there is nothing that can be done now ... the shot was given. But they didnt give me what I asked for, and then tell me its not safe and that they are sorry. To me sorry is not good enough. I have been in non stop tears since this happened 2 hours ago.

My husband said I should contact a lawyer but what good is that going to do ? It doesnt change what happened ... I dont know just need some advice ...... called my doctor at home and cell and waiting for a return call.

What can I do next?

I am a physician that works doing anesthesia on labor and delivery and I asked my Ob-gyn colleagues about this today. There is absolutely no contraindication to getting TDaP when you are pregnant because the pertussis portion is killed vaccine. The only vaccines you shouldn't get while pregnant are those that contain live virus (like MMR and Flumist). I would really encourage you to get your children the pertussis vaccine also because there have been a lot of pertussis outbreaks recently because the herd immunity is waning. Everyone in our department had to be vaccinated last year because a co-worker had it. If you have ever seen anyone with pertussis you would definitely want your children protected - you can cough so hard you break ribs! The TDaP is routinely given to all post partum women here as soon as they deliver as a public health initiative to stop the spread of pertussis.

The doctor did not say it wasn't safe...he said there were no studies on pregnant women receiving the shot (just as there are barely any studies on pregnant women receiving pretty much anything other than tylenol). Stop stressing -- that will likely do more harm to your baby than the shot.

Don't worry, there are so many worse things that could've happened...
I had flu shots with my 2nd and 3rd daughter at around 34 weeks ...something some people would freak out about, but everything was fine! I also was positivie for GBS with 2 and 3 ...another thing that is way more to worry about than a vaccine and...babies are fine (thank god)..
All 3 of my kids have received the dtap vaccine also.
You will be fine...don't stress :) The only thing I'd say would happen is that your body will build up the immunities for those potentially serious illnesses (like the vaccine is meant to do) and you'll pass on those antibodies to your baby! So, its a good thing! :)

Here's an article I came across: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0CYD/is_12_45/ai_n...

Try not to worry (I know - easier said than done!) - it won't help anything but the stress itself could have negative effects. Just let it go and instead create positive vibrations for your little bundle of joy!

You should consult a lawyer and then just pray that the baby will not be affected by this shot. If there is a problem then you will need money to help with expenses. Think positive that the baby will be ok and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
Good luck.
