Drinks at Bedtime

My 21 month old lil girl has a sippy cup at bedtime and if she doesn't fall asleep it may be refilled. It seems like her diaper leaks. I used Pampers size 5s now, she weighs 25lbs, and recently tried comfort for baby size 5s. It seems like they fill up really quick...during the day to. A couple weeks ago she had the same habit (sippy cup or 2) and wore size 4 and when she woke up would be fine, the diaper would only be 1/2 to 3/4 full. This leaky diaper started happening earlier this week. Any advice? Good diaper brands that work?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely try the Huggies Overnights :) Hopefully that'll fix it.

And I think you were right about the leg hole cuz during the day when she was running one side I don't think was tight enough and she had a spot of pee on her inner thigh right outside the leg hole...so I'm extra careful when put em on now and make sure they're tight enough & not too tight too.

The night before last I actually put her to bed 15 minutes later so she wouldn't suck down a sippy cup and ask for another one before she fell asleep... It's worked. She drinks one sippy cup, or half of the one, before falling asleep and her diaper is half full when she wakes up.

Perhaps the diapers are too big? I tried increasing the size for nighttime, but found that she would leak because they bunch and pull away from her body a bit. Just a thought.b est of luck.

I think the other posts mean Huggies OVERnights - they are the nighttime diapers - we have been using them for ages for the same reason and they are great. However, I have not tried the pampers overnight dipes to see how they work. I always preferred Pampers during the day. My little one still wears dipes at night and at about 31 lbs is in the Huggies overnights size 5.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and still keeps a sippy in her bed as she is a huge water drinker. We use huggies overnites and they work great. Maybe 1 leak per month. She waighs 29 lbs and wears the size 5. They are darn full in the morning but she's dry! Hope this helps!

Hi there,
I haven't seen any one address the fact that maybe you should not give her 2 sippy cups before bed. Even that one she has if she falls asleep should be cut down to half the amount. Keep reducing the amounts in the sippy cups, and you should see a difference in the diaper.
I give my 3 year old daughter about 1/4 of a cup of water and she is just fine with taking a few sips before bed, and then it is there if she wakes at night. I know there is a big difference between a 21 month old and a 3 year old, but I still don't see the sence of giving them a whole sippy or even 2 cups.
If she says she wants more, then you tell her that there is no more. She'll get used to it. It's really not nesessary to drink that much before bedtime.
Good luck!!

You didn't say what's in the sippy cup, but if it's milk or juice you should probably be weaning her off this and brushing her teeth before bed rather than letting her suck on some sugary stuff. I'm sure you know this but toddlers who fall asleep while sipping these liquids get cavities early on.

If it is water, you should also be weaning her off this because you will be wanting to potty train soon and eventually want her to stay dry overnight.

Around age 1 I weaned my older daughter off the nighttime liquids... slowly gave her less and steered the nighttime routine toward other things like bedtime stories, and lullabies... it worked pretty well, just add in the new activity first (a few books or singing in the rocking chair or whatever) and do it after the drinking... then a few days later slowly start to decrease the amount of liquid and move on towards the activity... next thing you know it's just a few sips then time to read or whatever.

If you plan to potty train somewhere around age 2 or 2 1/2, you definitely don't want her downing a cup of water before bed each night.

Sorry I got on my soapbox instead of answering your actual question about the diapers.

have you tried the pampers baby dry? They're specifically made for night time and worked for our daughter. Or at her size, you could probably get the huggies goodnights, which also work well.

I like the Huggies (good nights). You can also just try a larger diaper at night.

I see you got a lot of good answers here but I'll weigh in...

My son was having the exact same problem. We put him in a Pampers diaper that was one size bigger at night. We didn't have luck with the overnight diapers of any brand and zero luck night or day in Huggies. We also put diaper doublers in the diaper - 2 of them! We found them at Babies R Us. They are $3 for 30 or so. Very cheap.

Good luck!

Both my son and daughter had the same problem, soaking everrynight. They used to make "Diaper Doublers". I don't think they make them anymore and they were expensive and I had to mailorder them. I switched to using extralong, overnight maxipads (must be extralong, unscented, without wings). They look and work EXACTLY like the diaper doublers except they are way cheaper, local and have geat coupons. They work fabulously and I've never had a leak overnight again (boy or girl). Neither has had any kind of reaction or skin irritation to them and the Pediatrician loved the idea:)
I let my kids have water next to their beds and don't have a problem it. I need to drink several times a night too, so I sympathize with them.
Best of luck!

I have used the Huggies and Pampers overnight diapers, I like the Huggies the best. My little guy has been wearing them since about 20 months, he is a size 4 and no leaks since switching to an overnight diaper.

My son leakes so much during the night I had to get him diaper pads - like a sanitary pad but that are absorbent on both sides- that I insert within the nighttime diaper. I think I use Huggies Overnight diapers. For the diaper pads just do a google search.

A couple of thoughts.....are you sure size 5 isn't too big? My guy is 21 pounds and still wearing a size 3 that fits fine.

I've had bad luck with Pampers leaking overnight as well. So we put him in Huggies at night which I think are more absorbant, and Pampers during the day (which I think are softer and more comfy for him). I know they also have overnights which probably are supposed to be more absorbant but I haven't tried those.

My guess is that you're dealing with a "space" issue.

The gel stuff expands when it has the space to (diapers in the sink, for example, swell up to 3 x their normal size and then burst... don't ask why I know)

So I wouldn't be surprised if with the new roomy diapers, the pee, rather than being confined to a smaller area, is shooting all around the diaper, and possibly also dribbling out a leg hole. Because there's extra space, the gel stuff has more room to expand, so gets bigger.

Then again, she might have just been really sweaty last month, and was sweating out all the liquid.

My son has always had a large bladder. (and was over 30lbs at 6mo old). So we were in pullups and huggies overnights. BIG diapers. But with his bladder size, the LAST thing I would do, every night before bed, was to change his diaper out.

You may also have to change her at night before you go to bed. For awhile we always changed my son around midnight, since he'd already be wet and would usually pee a second time (at least) by morning. He didn't really wake up during the change so it wasn't a problem.
Huggies Overnights are good too.
