Hi Ladies, I sure hope someone here has some good advice. Sorry this will be a long one. I lost my job in october after 12 years of service and have been struggling to make the rent and our car payment. I was denied unempolyment. My fience works and makes $11/hr and his hours keep getting cut. He has had a lot of days off in january due to not enough work. All together he worked about 80 hrs in January. I am applying for almost anything only to be told I don't meet the qualifications. In the meantime I went to the county and tried to apply for assistance. They said he made to much for us to qualify for cash assistance and sent us to Emergency Assistance to help with rent one time in 12 months. EA said we DO NOT make enough to qualify for that. So I was looking into other appartments to move into that would be cheeper and the county would help. The problem now is his hours were cut so much that now we won't qualify for that. EA goes by your net pay and it was less than $500 in Jan. How is a family of 4 supposed to make it on that. So I would have to find an appartment in the area for less than $500 inluding utilties. The county people say they want to help but offer no guidance for other programs out there. It is a big secret! CEAP also said we make to little and EA said we would get turned down at ACCAP also because they all have the same guidlines. We do not have any money for Feb. rent at all. Our church helped us in Jan with part of it but it was a 1 time thing. I called some subsedized housing and it seems they are either not taking applications now or there is a 1+ year wait. So does anybody know where we can go for help before we end up on the streets. I expect to get a 3 day notice to vacate tonight or early in the morning.
Thanks in advance!
P.

So What Happened?

Thank you all who replied. Because his hours dropped so much in Jan we were finally able to qualify for DWP. This will help so much. It just proved to me that I need to remember that no matter how big my problems are - God IS BIGGER!
I feel so much better.

I am sorry I didn't read this sooner. Try contacting public housing, and the United Way. They are both good possibilities. The only other thought I have is if you have family you may need to move in with them for a while until the situation improves, the economy sucks and I certainly feel for you. I have actually had to have that conversation with our utility company, whether I should pay them (they waited 3 months after we moved in to send us our first bill) or if I should feed my kids.

have you tried catholic charities, red cross, salvation army??you should be eligible for some kind of county help.is he the dad to both kids??with his hours being cut-hes able to collect unemployment-are you collecting it also??11 an hour pt is not enough to care for a family of 4-so you should be able to collect something.did you get a ud placed on you??you have to be served an go to court before they can put you out-usually the court allows a payment plan-if not then they have to give you a week.mainly cuz of the kids.ive got more info-if you want to email me...good luck...

Hi, P.. I am so sorry you are having these problems. Have you tried CES, Community Emergency Services? I have a girlfriend who volunteers there a lot, and they sound like a wonderful organization. They are located in Minneapolis. Here is their website: http://www.communityemergencyservice.org/
Another site to look at is http://www.puc-mn.org/ . It is Pillsbury United Communities, and another girlfriend of mine works there, where she helps moms find childcare while they are trying to find work. They offer many other services for helping you try to find work.

I will keep you in my prayers, P..

Go to the County and ask to apply for DWP. This is a program that helps you to find a job, but in the meantime, it provides around $500/month. You should be fine with the income qualifications because 1) you can't have a job (which you don't) and 2) your household has to be under a certain amount which it sounds like you are. In addition, keep trying to apply for cash assistance and food stamps. They go by the latest household checks, so if your fiance's hours keep getting cut, you will get under the guideline. In addition, know that if you are getting evicted, it has to be by a judicial process. They will serve the notice on you and it will say 3 days or 10 days, but they still have to take you to court and get a judge to sign off on it. This is usually fairly quick, but it can buy you up to a week or two. Don't automatically assume that because you are getting the notice, you have to leave right then. Things will be strained, obviously between you and the landlord, but it is better then being on the street. Also, have you applied for unemployment?

Hi P.~
Try contacting United Way's 211. They are an organization that connects people in need with help in the community. They should be able to give you several organizations in your area that can assist you. Just dial '211' from any phone and it will connect you to them (or if calling from a cell phone you can dial ###-###-####). They can help you with such things as childcare, counseling, food, healthcare, housing, legal help, mental health, etc. I was an intern there several years ago; it's a great community service!

Hope this helps!

Have you applied for unemployment? My friend lost her job this fall too and has been receiving unemployment checks from the state while she looks for a new job.
