Does Your Toddler Do Weird Things?

My toddler has gotten into the habit of throwing things over his head with pretend objects and real ones. Sometimes he takes stuff and rubs it on his head. Whenever he lifts things up he looks at them as he throws them over his head. It just looks really weird, the more I tell him to stop the more he does it. Does anybody elses toddler do weird stuff like that?

What can I do next?

Isn't it wonderful watching learning actually taking place?? Isn't it weird, too? Yes, it is! My younger son (2 1/2 years) does this a lot more than his brother ever did. I chalk it up to experimental learning -- what will happen if I...? He learns gravity and momentum. He also needs to learn not to do it if you want to have any windows intact! So, yes, my son is learning, but he also knows to ask before he throws, and I say yes if it's small and soft, and let him know that we don't want to break anything. If he throws it after I say "no," then I take it from him and place it out of reach for a time. If it gets out of hand, you could enforce a no throwing but outside rule. He'll learn that, too!

Yup toddlers are weirdos and so are pre schoolers. The sillier the better, enjoy watching the imagination grow. i wouldnt pay too much attention to it and not make a big deal, unless your toddler looks like he is in a zone or trance and just keeps doing repetative things. But what you're saying sounds very normal to me.

He's playing, no biggy. My oldest boys (ages 10 and 11yo) like to rub things on their heads to see what creates the static and what doesn't.

Your son is very normal and just playing. Unless he is harming others, I would tell him to stop playing.

Just to add to what the other Mommas said, Toddlers are funny little creatures. Life is all about cause & effect. Just get down to his level & have fun with him. Keep in mind, there will come a time that he wants nothing to do with his parents. Before you know it, he will be 13 & too cool to hang with the family. We have a small window of time when our children think that we are super heroes. Ride the wave, Momma!

I agree with Vanessa. I think it is probably more about you than him. Sometimes our kids get a real kick out of us getting worked up. When my son was a toddler, my friend heard me fussing at him and told me that what I thought was my serious/mean voice sounded like a cartoon character! LOL If you want to phase out a behavior you have to be VERY calm about your reactions. I would use the same phrase each time and say it without any emotion. If you see him getting ready to throw something, walk over and take it out of his hands and say something like "No thank you to throwing things". I would also start to talk with him (even though he won't take it all in) about "We throw the _______ (ball or whatever it is) outside NOT inside". Finally, I would get him some appropriate things to throw outside (ball and glove, basketball or whatever) and you and/or his dad can teach him to throw appropriately.

Good luck!

Sounds normal enough to me! Pretend or imaginary play is a very good thing at this age! He is doing it more when you mention it because he knows it annoys you:) Our children have us figured out early! LOL. Good luck to you!

Chances are, he likes the reaction he gets or the feeling of doing it! He's probably just experimenting and having fun. I wouldn't worry about it - just enjoy watching him play.
