Does Anyone Smell a Troll........

I've seen this topic posted several times and I have to admit, I'm not sure what constitutes one being a troll on here. But recently I'm seeing a ton of 'odd' questions on here or questions with answers that would be blatantly obvious, not to mention the post are from new or rarely seen names.
Is it possible that a slew of new people have signed on to Mamapedia? Sure! And personally I could care less, just struck me as odd.
So my question is, how would someone benefit from trolling this site? (lol, I ask that like someone trolling will answer, LOL)

What can I do next?

  • this with your friends

So What Happened?

Thanks for the quick responses. Your answers make sense, but jeez, seems like a lot of trouble.

there is one guy on here that is a professor or something and uses the site for research. he'll ask trigger questions to see how much we jump one way or the other.

Some are from college students, same reason, papers
Some are from teens just to see what people will say. think prank calling.

The Urban Dictionary describes a Troll as:

"One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument."

The point of a troll is attention.

I always wonder how lame a person would have to be to Troll a Mom/Parenting site?

If I was going to Troll it would be something more salacious.. Maybe they have a kinky fascination for their mom?

Or they like reading about diaper blow outs and binky's?

It takes all types.

There are one or two today that I've pegged with my trolldar but I'm not rising to the bait.

Don't feed suspected trolls. Just report them.

I think they get the same "fun giggley boost of worthless importantness" as when they throw a rock thru the window of an old abandoned building. They get a charge out of making trouble and being a pest. They more than likely are young teens with a couple idiot friends sitting with them just to see how funny it is to read their stupid stuff in print. When they get to be rude and nasty it gives them a thrill. When we comment back and make a big deal out of what theyve said, it just fuels their ego and makes them excited to see how much power they think they had over others. Little do they know how really dumb they appear and how worthless what they say really is. Have a great day J.!

Good question. I've always assumed they are just people desperate for attention. Curious though.

Wow, I guess I've never even thought about trolling on here or anywhere for that matter. This is one place that I thought was "real" and not polluted by ulterior motives. How "pollyanna" of me. Kind of makes me not want to respond, anymore. How sad.

As long as people keep bringing the real answers and comments I don't mind living with trolls. Sometimes they sound just like my 14 y/o.

If my husband were really bored at work, man he'd probably be on here posting all sorts of stupid answers. If I didn't see him in person when TessT was posting some of his/her crazy answers, I'd have thought Tess was my husband, up to no good. So for some, I think it's just to get a rise out of people and to sit there and laugh with their friends (high school friends, guys at work.... who knows).
