I know that some of you moms are not only great with your families but also very handy around the house. I have a refrigerator that the freezer works perfectly but the refrigerator won't cool. It's the kind with the freezer on top, the refrigerator on the bottom, nothing fancy. I have tried cleaning the coils, turning it as low as I can and it just won't get cold. When you touch it it feels slightly cool but not enough to even keep food fresh. I can't afford a new refrigerator right now so I have to try to figure out something else. Does anyone have any quick fix ideas or know something else I can try to make it run. I tried the trick my ex=husband used to try if something didn't work right to kick it and even that didn't help. So if any of you have any suggestions on what it might be or if you know if the refrigerator is actually going out would the freezer still work? Any ideas would be so much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

go to youtube and type in "refrigerator not cooling" or something like that... I learn a lot of stuff from youtube vids :)
I would unplug it and defrost it and plug it back in. There should be a tube and tray under your fridge that collects condensation, that tube might be clogged and your fridge isnt circulating properly. If you let it defrost and warm up, it may dislodge whats in that tube, or if your male helper has a compressor he can blow some air up that tube. I've had that happen to mine before.
The fridge also has to have food and stuff in it too, if it doesnt have much in it they tend to run warm for some reason.
Good luck.
Depending on the age of your fridge, you may need to have the freon charged. Not terribly cheap- around $100 bucks I think, but cheaper than a new fridge.
Unfortuanately , had this happen a week ago but opposite ( freezer not cooling) . Anyway, repair guy came out, said we had blockage & showed it to me. He said we could do the frion(?) thing bit would likely make clog worse / not last long enough to be worth the cost. He did suggest purchaseing a Whirlpool b/c they are easier to repair, so you may be in luck if you have a Whirlpool. Sorry, but I would probably start saving up for a new fridge. Call a reputable repair person, my guy only charged me 10$ to tell me I needed a new one.
you might wanna check and see if the fan is still working. refrigerators have fans in them to move the cool air around. if there is a short in your fan, it won't be moving properly. if that is what the problem is, it is a fairly cheap repair. but as far as i know, that would be the only reason for the fridge to go out but not the freezer. good luck!
sometimes the freezer can overload the whole system, it happened to me before, i cleaned out the fridge, put everything in a cooler, let it get to room temperature (good time to clean it out) then turn it back on. Mine has worked like new since.....5 years now. If there is an option to keep the freezer at different temps, put it to the middle so that it wont happen again.
Are your fans working? Do you have ice forming in your freezer? Is your fridge clicking periodically? If any of these things are happening then your compressor probably isn't working right. You can try cleaning the coils on the back of your unit.
I agree with the others...it sounds like it might be either a clog or you need to gas it up.
I suggest you check out your local freecycle. I just put a side by side refrigerator/freezer on there and you can always request one. You never know what people want to get rid of.
Here's a link that has helped me in the past (it turns out my fan needed replaced): http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/refrigerator-not-cooli...
Good luck.
We used Sears and got completely ripped-off on the labor charge. There was a good article on Yahoo! just yesterday about this but I can't find the link. Basically the author instructed to call the manufacture of the fridge and find out who was on the "authorized repair list". These companies probably have experience with the fridge already, a direct tech-support line to the manufacture and report problems to the manufacture. Kind of like taking your Nissan car to the dealership for service instead of Cooter's Garage.
