I have noticed in the last few months that occasionally the items in the freezer will have a frosty layer on them sometimes and not others. I have cleaned the coils, but it still happens. Is this normal behavior, or should I plan on directing my tax returns towards new appliances?

Thanks to all who responded. I will try the vaseline trick and see what happens. I am glad to hear it is not on its way out with Christmas coming and all. Besides the "buy new appliances fund" is going to have to be applied to the newly set up "fix the car fund"! If it is not one thing....Thanks again.
The frost may be due to a leak in the door seal. Air is getting into your fridge - somehow. Make sure the door is closed - and then you can run vasoline on the rubber of the door...which will help ensure the door seal is sticking. My husband is a sales manager for Lowes - but I also saw this on a home improvement show - check out DIY.com (do it yourself network)
Sounds like the seal around the door isn't complete. The frost will come in as humidity and stick on things. Not sure why it picks and chooses. It's not a very expensive fix (new gasket) and you can do preventative thing on working seals by giving them a light brush with Vaseline every few months.
I know you can't store things for long periods of time in the refrigerator freezers versus a deep freeze beause of the defrost cycles it goes through. You do get freezer burn and frost on things.
If you are very concerned have someone check it out or buy a freezer thermometer in the gadget aisle and see if it is cooling enough.
Does your freezer have a temp control knob?? Mine does, and sometimes it gets bumped and then my items get the frosty covering. I also have to sometimes adjust it due to what temp. we are keeping the house, obvioulsy in the summer our house is more humid and the freezer has to work harder to keep cool. Anyway, I would not jump on a new fridge just yet. Good luck.
Not sure if you'll need a new fridge or a new gasket, but if you do need a replacement part of any kind (on this or any other appliance), you've got to check out repairclinic.com. You enter your appliance, brand, color of piece, estimated size and it will show you a picture of (hopefully) what you need. And their prices are unbelievably lower than a repairman's prices.
Don't use the vaseline, it will break down the rubber seal. Try having it replaced.

J., make sure that the freezer door is always closed tight.
I have had this happen when my freezer door accidently is left ajar even if only a crack.
Hi J. - I would check the manufacturer. How old is your fridge? It might be a freon problem. Call your manufacturer, find out if they'll make a service call to check on it for you. Cleaning and seal leaks could be happeinging - but I'd check with them before I just kept using vaseline.
