Do You Recommend Low-carb Diets or Weight Watchers?

Just wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience with low-carb diets? My mom, aunt, and cousins have done very well with the South Beach/revised Atkins way of eating--lean protein and good carbs (low-glycemic veggies, whole wheat pasta, brown rice), which is inspiring to me. My cousin has lost 18 pounds in two and a half months, and my mom lost 40 pounds five years ago and has kept it off. I was just wondering if anyone has had success with this and found it to be doable while raising little kids. I'm trying to decide between this and Weight Watchers, which appeals to me because of the flexibility of food options. I would really appreciate any advice and/or to hear about your experiences. Thank you so much.

I am on the WW program right now. Its been four months and I am down 20 pounds. All I can say is I don't even feel like I am "dieting". I eat pretty much whatever I want to and have just learned to not eat as much as I used to of the "bad foods". I don't believe there are any "forbidden" foods, you just have to make the decision on whether something is really worth all the points it might be.

Also, each week when I go to the meeting, I am so inspired by all the successes around me, that it keeps me motivated until the next week's meeting. I think this is the best program for me. Here in America we are killing ourselves with our out-of-proportion portion size! Good luck in whichever you choose.

I wish I had an answer for you but I am dying to know about your results. I am 33 and the weight keeps piling on, I am about ten pounds overweight which is enough on my 5'2" frame. I am not eating anything that I didnt used to, its just the my metablolism has slowed down. Would love to know a great way to lose these extra pounds. Please share when you decide on what is best!
Thanks.

Weight Watchers now offers a program called Core which basically lets you eat protien and good carbs until you are satisfied. Sounds like that might be the perfect match for you. Registration is free right now too, so you could just pay the weekly fee and go find out if you think you'd like it. Good luck! E.

I would have to vote for South Beach. My family has been using it's guidelines for about a year and a half now. We have all lost weight and are able to maintain. When you get to your ideal weight goal it's pretty easy to maintain even when you "cheat" a little. It's flexible and the meals are delicious. Also the recipe books are reasonably priced (I got most of mine at Half Price Books). I haven't personally used WW but I know people who have and have done well with it. It just seemed to me that The South Beach Diet was easier to stick to (no counting, meetings, etc.). It all boils down to personal preference. It's also about lifestyle change, whatever you choose it should be something that you can do for the rest of your life. For my family it is SB. It not only is good food and easy (most recipes are not complicated and use "normal" ingredients!) it is also heart healthy! I hope this helps you. God bless!

Well the LA Weightloss works REALLY well. I lost a total of 18lbs w/them but had to quit due to knee injury since they recommed some exercise but the plan is really easy & they let me pay the fee out while on the program. The staff were super nice & helpful/encouraging so I recommend that plan. It worked for me & you can take the program w/you even if you decide to discontinue it later & just do it on your own. Good luck!!

Good for you for thinking it through!!! That is the biggest step! I have done every diet in the world and I will give you my opinion. Sister in law has been on South beach for over a year...has done well. BUT......WW has such a great variety - you eat what your family does, eat out (better success rate!) and with such small kids...easy would spell success for you! BUT...take this to heart....
WRITE IT DOWN, PLAN THAT MENU EVERY SUNDAY!!!!
You will succeed!

I've done both. WW was about 2 years ago. South Beach-started in June. I've lost more on South Beach and really like the workouts included in the latest book, South Beach Supercharged. They are short and effective, so fit in my busy schedule (2 kids and home-based business). WW has meetings and support, but was A LOT more expensive than the book. I'm one of the few that WW didn't work well for. I did best on CORE eating plan and there was so much more support for Flex/Points program. South Beach is much better for me, plus the book cost less than one month of WW.

WW--lost 10 pounds pretty quickly, but only about 12 by end of 9 months, so it wasn't worth $500 for 12 pounds.

South Beach -- 25 pounds in 9 weeks and still losing each week. I checked first book out from local library, so that was free, then purchased new one for about $25.

I wish you the best in whichever you try.
