Dishwasher Advice

I've spent much more repairing my old dishwasher this year than I'd have spent if I'd have just bucked up and bought a new one. After another $159 out of my pocket just to get the handle replaced yesterday, I'm ready to make the big purchase. Any advice on brands to buy or avoid? How about special features to look for? Features you paid extra for but have found just aren't worth it? Thanks for the advice, as always. D.

I really wish when we built our house that somebody would have told us to upgrade our dishwasher from the standard model. It is a GE and we hate it. I am sure it is the builder's base grade model, but it is so loud and we have to add glass magic to every load to get the glasses clean. We have always had great luck with Kenmore (Sears). If you go to Sears, the salespeople will tell you the most popular model purchased by the employees of Sears--that way you know you are buying a good product. My advice--find a QUIET model--wait for a "0% Interest" sale, pay off the dishwasher over that interest-free period (make sure to make the payments b/c if you don't in time, then the interest will accrue and then you get hit w/ all the back interest. Let us know what you bought and if you like it. I'm ready to ditch the old one we have too.

The Kenmore elite dishwashers are very good. It has been 7 years since I had my kenmore dishwasher & with no problems at all. My husband is a plumber & says Bosch is a very good product too. Kitchenaid with stainless steel interior is also a very good choice. LG products stay away from. That is just my opinion.Look at Comsumer Reports & it should give you some great advise on what is right for your home. Good luck K.

We just bought a KitchenAid from Lowes and we are already having to call Kitchenaid to repair it. Maybe I got a lemon, because I talked to multiple dishwasher salesmen and our contracted installer and they all say KitchenAid and Bosche are the best. I have used ours 3 times and it is extremely quiet- you don't even know it is on. It's amazing! But, our soap drawer doesn't come open in the cycle- so we need to get it fixed. I love the power scrub feature on dishwashers. We have always had Maytag Jetclean dishwashers in the past and have never had an issue with them. I think the delayed start and the power scrub are the features I use. I also like the utensil drawer to be in the dishwasher racks, not on the door. I have heard the one's on the door don't do a great job.

when looking at a disnwasher, some of the features you want to consider is stainless steel interior since it retains the heat and doesn't stain from the ketchup and pasta sauce... also, delay start is nice if you have company over and don't want to start it right away since dishwashers can be loud... and the more you pay, the quieter they get... that's a premium i definitely payed A LOT for.. I have the Kitchenaid drawer dishwashwer and they are soooo unbelievely quiet, i love it. I am a Maytag rep on the weekends and we have promotions starting tomorrow for multiple appliance purchases so its a good time to consider upgrading. If you have any questions please ask.

Ours has been broken for a couple of weeks. I have been looking at either a maytag or a frigidare.

I would love to hear other's advice too.

Don't use the liquid Dishwasher washing detergents. They take a way the life of the machine. Just what the manufacture likes. I use one that is NOT Banned in Chicago, and uses ascorbic acid to clean. The dishwasher is certainly preference and all the bells and whistles you might want, but then once you decide, use a good cleaner and it won't break as easily. They are really rascals those manufactures. They don't even come with warrantees anymore, you have to buy that in addition to the machine.

My Bosch stinks!!! We bought a new construction home last fall that has all stainless applicances. (Thermadore/Sub Z and Bosch) Other than the fact that it LOOKS nice and is Very quiet we are unhappy with it. It's awkward to load and doesn't dry very efficiently. I curse it daily :-) I was much happier with my less expensive Maytag. Maybe we just got a lemon but I am seriously thinking about replacing it even though it's only coming up on a year old. Shop around ABT/Home Depot and Sears. ABT will meet and beat the others - I saved big on appliance purchases over the years with them.
