Difficulty with Bottle

Hello!
We have been feeding my four week old one bottle/day of expressed breastmilk for the past 2 1/2 weeks. This has not been going well. She will drink an ounce then stop and cry. I burp her and then she won't take the nipple. It will usually take her 45 min. to drink 2 oz (and the pediatrician is recommending that she drink 3 oz)! My husband has tried feeding her the bottle (in case my smell is distracting her) but to no avail. In addition, we have tried four different bottles with nipples. Any advice? I would exclusively breastfeed but this is not possible since I will be going back to work and want to get her accustomed to the bottle.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

K., I am a childcare provider and have had about 6 breast fed babies. Thank goodness you are starting early!! Someone suggested a faster flow nipple and I would second that. The little ones are used to your milk coming very quickly. You didn't mention what kind of bottles you've tried, Playtex Nursers have worked well for a couple of "my" babies. Just keep at it and leave baby and Daddy alone for a while, not fun for Daddy but it has to be done!

Good Luck, M.

maybe this is stating the obvious, but i know my son won't take a bottle if it isn't the right temperature. it has to be warmed up or he won't take it. he is still breastfeeding and taking the bottle.

My youngest didn't want to take the bottle at all, but I had to go back to work. What did we do? We ended up having him get crash courses at the babysitter... not fun for either of them!
I would recommend, if at all possible, you pumping enough for one entire day and having dad be in charge that day. You leave. If you are nowhere near the house, it will be easier for dad and baby boy. Maybe you and your daughter can go out for a girl's day? At the end of the day, come back and see how it went.
After my son literally had no other choice, he took the bottle just fine.
We use Soothie bottles, and we have for both my kids. The nipples are just like the pacifiers, so if they take one, they'll most likely take the other.

I swear by the Breast Flow bottle. You can find them at Babys R Us. My daughter refused every bottle, but she took this bottle from the first instant. Good luck!

I used Advent bottles and my son hated them! The nipples were too big and I could hear him sucking air the whole time, he would get very mad. I think the air hurt his tummy too. I went out and bought a couple Dr. Browns bottles to see if that helped, and it did. He doesnt suck air at all with them, so I had to completely replace all of my bottles. Picky little guy!

My daughter seemed to have a similar problem - and we upped the flow rate for her nipples (from the 0 month size to the 1-3 month size) and she seemed to take more milk more quickly. She made a bit of a mess at first, drooling all down her chin; but I just tucked a burp rag under her chin to avoid making a mess. I think she just got tired of sucking so hard for so long!

I had this exact same thing happen with my baby at this age. It sounds like a reflux problem and not a nipple problem. I would check with her pediatrician.
