Hi, I would give wool covers a try :)
My son did gag himself for a little while (his has reflux tho). Hopefully he will stop soon- I would try to ignore it so he doesnt do it to get attention though...
GoodLuck
I'm having trouble with my diaper covers. been using litewraps with no trouble until lil man starting becoming active. they leak terribly now. I'd like to stick with cloths but need to find a better cover. any advice?
One more thing. . . my son is sticking his hands in his mouth and making himself gag. is this normal or is he bulimic? :)
thanks for any help any moms could provide.
Thank you for all the great responses! I did not expect so many. . . On the diaper issue I've looked into both bummis and thirsties and will try both to see which is best. On the gag/barf issue, we have since noticed he tends to do it when not getting quite enough attention, or he starts it up when another tooth starts cutting through (which has been about 1/month since he was 4 months old - this seems like a lot to me). So, we are trying harder with distraction, keeping him busy, AND frozen quartered bagels are working GREAT with the teething. . a nice cold tasty treat.

Try thirsties covers. I have several and love them. Never had a leak. Check out nickis diapers... http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=216 they even do free shipping on covers.
I've used Bummis w/ both my boys and didn't have too many problems. The older one didn't start on cloth until 15 mos, so he was very active! Just make sure everything is tucked in and you should be OK. If your still having a problem, you might want to put in an extra insert. I have microfiber ones I got w/ my bumgenius diapers that I put under a flushable rice-paper liner as well as just gerber birdseye diapers that I fold lengthwise in thirds and then again in half (so it fits on the diaper). This sounds bulky, but my boys don't mind. Good Luck! T.
Thirsties & bummis are the best. They are cut differently, so if you can figure out where he is leaking from (leg, waist) with a little research you can pick the best one for him. Also, he may be ready to go up to the next size in both diaper & cover. My fav sites: www.greenmountaindiapers.com www.clothdiaperoutlet.com
NO info on the diaper issue.
The gag thing is perfectly normal. He'll tire of it soon. :-)
We like thirsties & bummis covers best.
The gagging thing seems normal as most little ones do tend to still put many things in their mouths. Maybe bring it up to his ped at his 12 month well visit to be sure it isn't a sensory issue. If there aren't any other concerns (if he's not actually causing himself to vomit) I wouldn't worry so much, just try to redirect that behavior.
Good luck!
I went through the gagging bit with both of my boys. My oldest would actually make himself throw up regularly. I asked the doctor about it, and he said it was normal, that they just like the feeling of the gag reflex. He outgrew it after a couple of months. My one year old still does it on occasion.
I'm sure he just finds it amazing that he can make himself do that. Sort of like how a couple months ago he was throwing everything off his highchair to hear the bang, right?
Hi D., I can't help you with the diaper thing, I always used disposables myself...but the hand in the mouth thing is totally normal. He is learning about his body and has figured out how to gag...distract him and this stage will pass! Best wishes.
Hello, My name is M. Russell and I have been a childcare provider for 12 years and a parent for 20. In all those years I have just about seen it all, normal and the not so normal. Toddlers especially tend to learn by accident usually during the teething process from knawing on their hands that they have this amazing power to barf oin command. They feel this great sense of accomplishment and control over their parents. It is something they made and what has worked for me is to just try to teach them not to put their hands or anything in their mouth not only from germs but it will end that as well. I have noticed that it happens more when they are mad or upset or do not want to do something. Getting back to the look what I made thing. They will also plow in their diaper if it is too loose or if they can get to it, I know people dont like to use disposable diapers because of the whole biodegradeable issue but if you havae a child who is a little curious then I would highly recomend the change. Children are very quiet and sneaky and the last thing you want to walk in on say after nap is a painted crob or walls. It has happened to me a couple times and I am usually good at outsmarting them, well I guess they won the sneking game, ha ha. Boys tend to be the ones who do that the most girls are mostly the kind to not like making a mess or getting dirty. I just wanted you to know that you dont need to worry there is no eating disorder and maybe a time out would help. Just maje sure you dont use their crib, bed or bedroom as a timeout spot because children will have trouble associating their room or bed as a good place and will become upset and then not want to sleep. If you should have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me and I can help you further, Thanks M. Russell
Thirsties covers are very good. They do run quite big (my son wears a med in everything else, but is pretty much a small in them).
I haven't tried them, but I know there are some one-size covers. I also liked the Diaperaps ones--I think they had leg gussets, which helped a lot with active ones!
I friend swears by the little wool covers. She re-lanolizes hers from time to time as that is what help them stay waterproof.
As for the gagging thing, I echo everyone else. Perfectly normal. Every one of my four children did it between the ages of 1 and 2. Very annoying and messy if they succeed in making themselves puke! i think it must just be a sensation thing, "hey look at this this feels weird." I would try and distract him when he does it as half my kids would do it more if I reacted. good luck
