Cloth Diapers on 2 Question

I have a skinny 23lb 17 month old, and a super chunky 19lb almost 4 month old. I'm switching them both to cloth diapers, and because of our dryer and our budget, I'm going with prefolds.

Currently, they're both in size 4 Luvs. I'm planning on getting Premium CPF's. However, now I'm starting to wonder if these are going to work for both of them. Will they fit a chunky baby and a skinny toddler? Should I get toddler size instead? I'm also planning on getting Bummis wraps for both of them in medium. Anyone have experience with these? Do they run pretty close to the size the website says they do (mediums are for 15-30lbs)?

What can I do next?

Yes, the prefolds should do fine. Bummis covers are also great. You may also consider the Thirsties covers since they have the gussets that would ensure a good fit for skinny or chubby thighs.

Also if you need an easy diaper for out and about there are alot of one-size pockets available now. The Happy Heiny One-size or the BumGenius One-size 3.0 would be great to use and should fit either child well.

Toddler prefolds are HUGE.
My 22 month old is 36" tall and 29 pounds and she swims in toddlers...she still fits in premiums just fine.
Premiums may be bulky on your 4 month old, but they will fit. They should be a great size on your 17 month old.
the Bummis Super Whisper wraps run true to size...maybe just a smidge large. My daughter is still comfortably in mediums.
The Bummis Super Brite are nice because they have an extra leg gusset, but tend to run a little smaller.
Have you looked at Thirsties covers?
The Thirsties are very trim and wipe clean so you can easily reuse them, the Bummis have a more cloth-like lining and hold smells and moisture.
www.nickisdiapers.com has free shipping on covers, and Thirsties are frequently on sale.
Anyhow, I use both covers and like both...but if you are using prefolds exclusively the Thirsties may be a better bet just because they wipe clean after pee only dipes so you won't go through nearly so many.
I use only cloth and I have tried EVRYTHING LOL If you have any questions feel free to send me a message.
Good luck, and good for you for using cloth. They are so much healthier for your kids and so so SO much better for our planet :)

Forgot to add, if you haven't already...invest in a few Snappi fasteners! They are so much easier than pins and work really well

Becky,
I have used Bummies they run pretty true size if your 2nd child will stay chunck you have to purchase larger diapers later. Also if the wraps are only peeped on you can dry them on a rack in direct sunlight and the diapers dry better in the sun then the dryer. Good luck!

Hi! I am pretty much going through the exact same thing as you, I am switching my 18 month & 3 month old boys. My toddler is a whopping 29 lbs but by baby is only 13lbs and long. The premiums I just ordered are HUGE on the baby, impossible for him to wear. I am also ordering some pocket diapers and all in ones to try. We are on a budget too but I also don't want to order all of these prefolds and find out it's too much too handle or the older one won't have it. My original thought was to do prefolds on the baby & all in ones for the toddler but the prefolds are too big I have to order more. Anyway, I'm also thinking that the one size diapers would be fairly economical, they could share them and I could get less. Sorry, rambling a bit. I have actually been approached to host a cloth diaper demo class at my home in Lakeview. The woman owns Love Bugs, Co. (www.lovebugsco.com) she is extremely helpful. If you are in the area, would you want to attend, or any other moms out there?
Well, I hope I helped a little, I mostly thought it was interesting that we were going through the same thing.
Good Luck! Please email me if you or anyone else reading this is interested in attending a class.

Edit: My understanding is that there are lots of all in one diapers that take just as much drying time as prefolds, just thought I'd throw that in!

Hi Becky -

I did not find Bummis to run true to size personally. My daughter (who was rather skinny) outgrew the mediums at around 19 lbs I think (at about 20 months). She has been in large for awhile. They may have changed their sizing recently. I sell them but , only what I have left. I won't be carrying them in my store any more. Thirsties makes a great cover! I now carry mainly Thirsties and I have a few Motherease covers. I think sizing also depends a lot on what you are putting in the diapers. As for prefolds, the premium size should work for both children. They may be really bulky for the baby at first. I mainly use fitteds with my covers. I'd be happy to help with you if you have more questions. My website is www.lovebugsco.com. There are several local home-based CD businesses posting here and they are all wonderful! I am sure any one of us would be thrilled to help. I am in Lake County. Hope that helps!

I have 2 kids. A 34 in 31 lb girl who is in toddler prefolds with the back folded down about an inch and a 5 month 14 lb boy who is just grown out of infant size pf and too small for premium. I found at greenmoutaindiapers.com that they have cpf's in various in between sizes. I just ordered red edged prefolds for him and they are a tiny big but really great and amazingly soft. I love Thirsties covers. Wasn't a big fan of the Bummis covers but I have 3 size small ones that I'm selling if you want them. As someone else mentioned, nickisdiapers.com has awesome free shippping on covers and the thirsties are only $11. GMD was great about answering my questions about pfs and really quick with getting back to me and with shipping. No free shipping though :(
I honestly never tried a premium sized pf on my daughter. I don't have any and the toddler ones work fine for me. She's pretty chunky so I'm not sure it would fit. Since your toddler is skinny it probably would. My son is still in size small thirsties and has plenty of room to grow. My daugther is in the larges but I could probably squeeze her into a medium if I had to so I would bet that a medium would be fine for both your kids. THey have some great colors too.
I hang dry my covers and prefolds, if it's not raining. The covers I hang dry inside if it's raining. the PF I put in the dryer with 6 dryer balls if it's raining. The sun has worked wonders on them. I have very few stains. Good luck. IT's a hard transition but after a few weeks you get used to it and don't even remember why you thought sposies were so great.....
