sounds crazy, but if it has already set... add a tiny bit of oil on it to hydrate it again, and then use dawn or some other kind of dish soap and rub it in. wash in the hottest water possible. It works like a charm.
Hi, I have lots of grease stains on my good shirts from cooking w/ oil. I use Ajax laundry detergent and they are not coming out. I have put stain remover on them (Bissell) and it doesn't seem to do the trick either. Is it too late because I've already washed them? I am going to get an apron when I cook from now on, but need help w/ the clothes I've got, I don't have many clothes and I really need to try and get these clean. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks
Thank you for all your great responses..... since most people recommended dish soap, I had Palmolive Oxy Plus, I used that. ALL the stains came out, I was very impressed!! I had to do almost all my shirts and some of my sons and I used the whole bottle, I think I went a little overboard, but it worked. Thanks so much for the great advice, I am also going to try the Shout gel that was recommended for other stains and bought some Oxy to go in every load. With four kids (and three of them being boys) I need some "good" stain remover. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I'm also an avid ZOUT (regular bottle, not spray) user, first used it on my dh's Navy whites, you would not believe the grunge it got out those collars.
Then I had a tshirt that I had gotten melted butter on, had washed and dried it a few times before using the Zout. Now you can't even tell there were any stains there.
It helps to apply the Zout and let it sit a bit before washing. I have yet to find a stain it doesn't work on.
You can try Dawn dish soap.... I had pretty good luck getting the grease stains off my husbands clothes. Let the soap soak in and then add a little water and rub together to a lather. Rinse and repeat and then try to wash them in the washer.
Hope it works! Good luck!
Jen
Here's the sure fire trick! Spray each spot with your favorite stain remover (Shout, Spray and Wash - whatever), then...take an ordinary bar of soap (dry-slightly damp) and vigorusly rub soap all over the sprayed area. Make sure you hit each grease mark with the spray and the soap. This even works on stains that go all the way through the wash and dry only to be discovered while folding - simply wash them again using this method. Works EVERY time!
The stain will set if you dry it in a dryer. what i do is buy DAWN or another liquid dish soap like that has "oxy-plus" in it (it will say this on the label). Then rub the soap in with an old toothbrush. Let it sit for a few hours, then wash in the washer with detergent and then LINE dry. if the stain is still there - repeat. if it is gone, know that next time you wash the item you can dry it in the dryer.
GOOD LUCK!
Zout is the best stain remover I have ever used, by far, especially for set-in stains. It comes in a spray bottle. Sometimes you have to use it a few times (per the label instructions) on really tough stains. Try to see if the stain is still there before putting the item in the dryer so that you do not set the stain any further.
If the clothes are machuine washable try a little Dawn dish soap and warm water. rub the fabric together or use your fingers to rub it in. Let it set for about 1/2 an hour and wash on warm if the fabric permits other wise wash on cold. Do NOT use a dish soap with bleach in it unless they are all white and are cotton. Good luck. If you spray shout on the spot and rub before you wash it the grease stain should come out also.
Dawn dish soap or "Awesome" cleaner from "The Dollar Tree" and an old toothbrush. Good Luck!
Dab liquid dish detergent like Dawn directly on the spots and let them sit for 30 minutes - then scrub with a soft soapy brush, wash in as hot water as you think the fabrics can take and use Wisk detergent, You can always get out oil - blood, fruit juice & tomato stuff is much tougher. The only trick with oil stains is on dark colors - if you wash a few times and don;t get it out the fabrics fade everywhere except the oil spots because it seals the fibers.
You should check out a local goodwill for clothes - I've found lots of things with the tags still on. Go to a swanky town like Walnut Creek or Burlingame or San Francisco - they have great thrift shops.
You might want to look into some type of commission only part time job. I sell shutters and blinds door to door for a contractor and I'm making the same $$ working 5 hours a week that I made at a full-time job at Ethan Allen - I got laid off in June & thought we were going to lose our house 'cuz NOBODY is hiring residential interior designers that aren't a computer wiz.
Think outside the box - my friend is doing great with Mary Kay - she was at Ethan Allen too. We figured out that the money we save on gas, lunch out, daycare and drycleaning wasn't worth the stress. I did the math and was bringing home $300 a month after I shelled out for daycare overtime, gas etc.
Anyway, insomnia rides again. Good luck with the laundry and everything else.
I hear that soaking grease stained clothes over night in coke works great. You just soak the clothes in the sink and then wash them. As for getting an apron to protect your clothes you might be better off just going to good will and buying some cheap shirts to cook in. I have worked in the food industry half my life and grease will actually soak thru your apron and onto the clothes underneath. I buy cheap Hanes white cotton shirts from Kmart and use those to cook in, that way you can bleach them and they are very inexpensive to purchase.
Good luck!

I'm really bad about getting spattered as well, have ruined many tops that way, however, with diligence and some of the suggestions that have already been offered in these posts you can probably get rid of the stains that you've already encountered by treating and retreating them till they finally disappear. In the meantime, find yourself a cute apron and hang it in the kitchen where its very handy. I have finally learned to put mine on whenever I'm cooking or washing dishes. Sometimes I think I'm even cuter when I'm wearing it, haha. Aprons were made for a reason, why we take so long to realize that, I do not know! Find one that has a good bib area, pockets for holding a paper towel or oven mit. You will soon fall in love with your apron. I usually wash mine on Friday with the towels, and it's usually pretty jacked up looking by that time! (makes you realize how many blouses you saved that week ;)
I have found that an equal mix of Era and ammonia, sprayed on the spots (saturate them) and let soak several hours, has worked wonders on grease stains, even those who are already washed and dried.
Good luck, B.

Try Smart & Final Cleaner/Degreaser. It may not work if the stain is already set but try it. I have used it for everything. The BEST oven cleaner ever (when used full strength)...works better than 409(when diluted w/water). Used it to clean a stain on my carpet & a black urethane stain(a product my husband uses at work) off my seat in the car.Give it a try. Can be purchased at any Smart&Final. Resturants use it to clean the grills....Good Luck,L.
I have the same problem with oil splatters on my tops along with salad dressing drops. I have good success with Spray and Wash the one in the can, NOT the plastic bottle. I now make it a habit to lay each top out flat to automatically check for those spots each time I do my laundry. This works for me even when I have already washed a spot without pre spraying. Good luck and I hope this works as well for you. E. L.
Buy Goo Gone and follow the directions. I just got grease out of my husband's clothes (who decided to help in the kitchen) just this morning.
Hi C.,
I use OxiClean for all my stains and it works really well. It is the ONLY thing that has gotten all the stains out of my toddler's clothes and mine. And, I get the cooking oil on my tops too from cooking dinner.
I use the OxiClean spray bottle. It can be a bit expensive but worth it, I think as it's more expensive to replace clothes.
Good luck...sure sounds like you have your hands full!
Jen
try pre-treating with dawn dish soap
good luck!
Hi C.,
A favorite grease/stain remover of mine is Simple Green. I use it full strength from a spray bottle directly on spots. I used to be married to a truck driver and this is the only thing that would remove fifth-wheel grease.
Since you've washed (and likely dired)the clothes, pour 1/2 to one full bottle of Simple Green into a sink with hot water, put the clothes in and let them soak for a day and a night, then wash as useual. This will also remove any metals from clothing due to minerals in the water you may have. Clothes will sparkle like new.
Best of wishes,
L.
Dawn dish washing liquid works great. I use the original one and put it on my stains. If the stain is old or is quite big, I leave it on for a while. Scrub at the stain before washing and wash your laundry the way you normally do. I have even left the liquid on overnight and nothing has happened to my clothes. You may have to do this more than once if the stain is bad enough, but it will work.
Hi C.,
oil stains are tough... I love Shout stain remover. Soak it in "Shout" for a few hours and see if that won't help.
I read your bio and understand how hard it is to make ends meet for families. I may know of something fun you could do on the side to help and it doesn't take anything away from what you are doing now. Contact me if you are interested.
Best wishes on the shirts... that's so frustrating, I think we have all been there!
Liquid dish soap works like magic! It doesn't matter that you've already washed the shirt...it will still work!
I've had great luck with Shout! Even AFTER I've washed and dried the clothes. I try to wear my apron but sometimes I forget and I get a lot of oil/grease stains on my tops and I used to have to toss them and I would get so frustrated! I've had AMAZING luck with Shout. Spray it on, rub it in and let it sit. I usually repeat this like once or twice and then wash it! Good luck!
I've had good luck with Wisk. Put some directly on the spot, scrub it a little with a brush and rewash. It has taken out spots for me even after having already washed them. Good luck.
I highly recommend a product called Soillove. You can purchase it in the grocery stores by the products that are suppost to remove stains. It is a green bottle with a spray pull up tube. Small bottle but big results

Hi C.,
All you need is Dawn. Even if you've washed and dried them just put Dawn liquid dishwashing soap, wash in cold water and the stain will go away! Good Luck! I know how badly it feels to stain nice clothes!
Oh I hate these nasty little splatters!! What I do is get a stain remover stick and rub these little splatter spots on it (preferably right away when you take it off and go to put it in the hamper). For those that you have already washed & dried, it will take longer. Rub each of these little spots well with that stain stick, wash, let dry (not in the dryer! heat sets stains), wash again, and repeat. It'll fade with time.
The stain sticks are the only "safe" thing to leave on your clothes spots until laundry day (assuming you wash each week or so) - gel or spray you cannot allow to dry on the fabric or it will fade the fabric and THAT you can't get out.
Grease launders out better with hot water. Blood needs a simple pre-soak in cold water. Anything stained, make sure the wash has removed it BEFORE you put it in the dryer as heat sets stains.
Yay! I have the answer to this! I was so happy to learn this as I had thrown out so many tops/sweats with grease stains.. Nothing looks worse..Use Dawn dishwashing liquid (or any other dishwashing liquid that says it cuts grease) and pour it directly on and rub in really well, then wash as usual. This even works on OLD grease stains that have been laundered many times!
Grease stains are really a pain. I don't get many because I don't cook much, my kids are grown and gone. I am a Shaklee distributor and if you live near or in Fresno, I'd be happy to give you a sample of the Basic H2. I'm not positive that it will get it out, but I'm pretty sure that it will. What do you have to lose, it's a free sample? You can send me a message or go to my Mama Perks ad on Shaklee and get my contact info.
Good luck, B.
I will usually use a dish detergent on the spots like Dawn, but if you have dried it already it may be too late.
Hi C.,
Shout Stain Stick has worked for me even after going through the dryer but I always use Tide detergent. Also, my Mom swears by a using a bar of Ivory Soap - when my daughter was little I pretreated everything with it and it worked well. But, I have a shirt I wear when I work at my Church's Neighborhood Meals programs (feeding the homless and hungry) that has stains that I can never get off. The shirts have the volunteer's name on it so our clients can connect with us so we wear them - stained or not!
Hope this helps and Please keep praying as the Lord will provide!
Love,
Patti b
Use dish soap. It takes it out really well. Just put some on and rub it around, Then rinse it out. I have used it on car grease and it took that out as well!
I have used Oxi-clea You soak for a few hours then wash.
I had 2 sets of clothes, keep the clothes that are stained now for eating and when you do get clothes take them off when they eat. My daughter wore her meals.
Dishwashing liquid directly on the spot, rub.
It might be too late since you have washed them, especially if you dried them also, but I always use Dawn dish soap on my grease stains and it works really well. I like the blue original kind the best. Good luck!
I use Shout Advance... that stuff is great! As soon as you can put it on the garment and let it set and then before washing it put it on again. It was done wonders for me.
Shout Ultra Gel stick is a miracle stain remover (especially on grease stains)! Even if you've washed and dried your clothes, it works! It almost always gets the stain out the first time. If not, try it again and it should work. I also have not had any problems with it bleaching out colors, although you may want to test it first on the fabric. (Make sure you buy the GEL stick)
Another great thing is you can treat the stain and let it sit for a week if you have to. Seriously, the best laundry product I own!
Good luck!
Nicole
Dear C.,
You can try Dawn dish detergent, but the stains might be too set now.
It's great to look cute cooking and everything, but change out of your good clothes to do it. Aprons are wonderful. I actually have quite a collection of them. But, beware, aprons won't protect your sleeves.
If your husband wears long sleeve button down shirts, you can use one of his old ones. My daughter and I used my husbands cast-offs for cooking, painting, doing arts and crafts. They work great for those things.
I hope you can get the stains out. Just be careful to avoid them in the future and soak them then hand wash in grease cutting detergent right away.
Good luck!
C.,
My husband is a farmer and his clothes get very greasy. I put lemon pine sol in with his laundry and it gets out most of the grease and oil. Not sure what it would do to a "good" shirt but it works most of the time on his clothes.
I don't know if it's too late. But I supposed it wouldn't hurt to try this. I used to date a guy who worked on oil burners for home heating. He used Lestoil on his work clothes to get out the oil stains. Worked great.
Zout works really well on grease stains!
What has worked for me...even after washing once since I don't usually notice the spots until I am folding them...is a Dollar Store product called Awesome. It is in a slightly opaque spray bottle with orange writing all over it. Spray some on the stain just prior to throwing it in the washing machine. It gets most of the cooking grease stains out.
Like you, I cannot afford to buy myself new things very often, so I rely on being able to keep my clothes nice. I work very hard to get stains out of our clothes! We too are struggling so don't feel alone there. I just thank the Lord that I have never had the luxury of "extra" money because those friends of mine that had money all the time have it harder now learning how to make ends meet on a tight budget. Bless you and good luck with the grease stains!
I have found liquid dish detergent is usually pretty effective.
Also, I have a magnet I made that says "check stain" that I put on the washer when I have a piece in the wash that is being treated for a stain. That way, I remember to look, see if the spot is still there and keep it out of the dryer if I want to treat it again. (Also helps alert your kids if any of them are moving clothes into the dryer for you.)
I use the Spray n Wash Dual Power. It is really watery compared to others, so a little hard to used to but really worth it. I used to use and still keep on hand is the Spray n Wash in the medal can not the plastic bottle. My father works around greasy truck parts and my mother only uses the medal can too. I also have their stay stick for things I know will stain and I'm doing wash at the time. Good luck!
I use SHOUT GEL, but mostly I use APRONS. ;D I also use splatter screens when I fry. Those lil grease spots are hard to see on garments....
The shout can be applied and left til laundered. (They also make little ind. wipeys, but pricey)
I would try the Shout gel. Work it in well!
Wash, check garment, do it again if necc. You are right about the dryer setting stains, but those cooking spots should come out. Only RED stains are impossible to move. Good luck. You are right lots of folks struggling right now...
I use Zout, it seems to work on everything. Good luck! (I only cook in pjs - I have to change the minute I get home to be comfortable!) : )

I know when I got grease stains on my clothes I used liquid dish soap and it worked like a charm, the shirt was a solid color shirt and you can't see any of the grease that splashed on it (it was a lot too). I'm not sure how it works for stains that have been there awhile, but its worth a try. I just poured the soap on it and let it sit awhile and then rinsed it and washed it as normal.
well right now i am trying la's totally awsome on some clothe that have grease and oils in them and on most of the clothes it seems to be working but the towels i am rewashing after retreating with the awsome straight (undiluted) on the grease stains and this is after treating with dawn dish detergent, nail polish remover, ammonia, spray and wash and out of frustration i decided to try this thinking well if it doesn't work all i have left to try is bleach, but the awsome seems to be working, i will see if retreating it the same way with awsome and rewashing does the job, because i like these towels and clothes and i don't want them destroyed or permenantly stained with oils.
I have found that dish detergent works well on grease or oil stains b/c it cuts grease. I have even used it after I missed it- they are hard to spot sometimes and it has always worked well. Good Luck!
