Deciding What, When, Where to Buy a Tv

My husband and I have been talking about getting a large screen tv for over a year now. I decided I would like to buy him one within a couple weeks. I spoke with his brother to get some info. about what my husband wants in a tv, and what he told me was to get one that is 120hz 1080p lcd...preferably Samsung. The space we have will fit a tv 58" wide. I need to know where the best place is to buy it, and what kind of warranty can I or should I get? Of course I would like to get the best price possible, but I am looking in the price range of 1100-1600. Any info, recommendations, shared knowledge, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I have purchased 1 tv, 2 cameras, 1 video camera and a washer and dryer from Best Buy. Each time the service was really good and the staff was very knowledgable. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Good luck!

We like to deal with Best Buy. We have purchased 2 Sony Bravia 46" TV's from them as well as a smaller Samsung and Sharp.

You can get good deals at Best Buy and they stand by their products. That is where we have purchased all our tv's excpet for the 2 Dell's.

The 2 Sony's are used the most because they are in the family area. We have "twin" TV's in a large living area and love this set up.

We also have 2 46" Dell Plasma's which are VERY nice, however they get hot when on for a long time. Our daughter has this in a game room and you can feel the heat after they play the Wii for a while. We don't notice the heat so bad in the large game/media area.

We also have a small Sharp with built in DVD player in daughter's room that is a good little TV.

The Samsung is in the master bedroom and has been a good tv as well.

Overall, we've had good experiences with Sony, Samsung and Sharp. The only complaint on Dell is the plasma tv gets too hot.

The pricing has come way down since we bought our last tv. You can probably find a good product in your price range. I know we paid over $3000 for 1 of the Dell's and less than a year later, bought another and it was less than $3000. I think we paid around $1700 each for the 2 Sony's. Hope that helps a little!

Good luck!

Consumer Reports finds the best prices and selection online for TVs rather than in stores.

We just got a TV for Christmas from Amazon. It was a 40 in Samsung LCD 120 Hz 1080p. They have free shipping and NO tax (in Texas b/c they don't have a warehouse in TX) on top of the lowest price. You have to actually buy from Amazon, not a company within Amazon for no tax.

It is in our living room right now. It is the third TV in our family from Amazon.

I do a lot of my research online and check out www.shoplocal.com for any deals that might be going on. I also go to specific store websites like BestBuy. That's where we got our big tv 2 years ago.

DLP is a far superior picture but if you want flat panel, this won't work for you. If you have some space, go for DLP - you will LOVE the picture! I found a 60" Mitsubishi DLP tv on TigerDirect.com for $999 with free shipping. I haven't ordered from them, but we did order our two DLP tv's from companies online and had no problem. I would definitely get a warranty. I buy my warranties from http://www.squaretrade.com. I haven't had to use them for service yet but I've done extensive research and there are great reviews of them. They sell warranties much cheaper and if you don't need the warranty anymore, you can get a refund - I've used this for a stolen phone (theft wasn't covered) and a computer that I decided not to keep. If you order online, it probably doesn't matter when you buy it. We've bought lots of items from Best Buy and we almost always have to use the warranty. I'm beginning to think that they sell bad products and dealing with the warranty coverage is always a hassle at Best Buy. We don't buy things there anymore.

Don't do anything until after the Super Bowl! All the experts have said that is the best time when you're going to get your best deal for a flat screen. It's also the best time to "haggle."

I noticed that someone said don't do it until after the Superbowl. I have actually heard that you will find great deals leading right up to the super bowl because people know that you want a large screen for that event. I also bought my flat screen (42") from Amazon.com and as the other person said, it was a great experience - they send someone out to install it and make sure it is working properly.

Good luck!

We recently purchased two TVs from Best Buy and the very next day I found them on Best Buy's website $50 less than what we paid - I called the store and they told me to come in and they gave me the difference back. I believe they have a guarantee that if you find a lower price anywhere within 30 days, they'll match it. We didn't purchase the warranty.

When we bought our flat screen (not a large one). We went to all the major retailers to find what we liked. Once we figured out what tv we wanted we started searching for the best deal. We reluctantly bought one online at amazon.com. Turned out to be a terrific experience. The price was lower than even costco would offer (and I agree that have some GREAT deals). No tax and they sent someone out to install the tv for us. We were told by the installer that if we were not happy we could just refuse the tv. We would definitely do it again.

We've researched a lot of lcd tv's and the best picture we've found is with a Samsung. The best prices we've found is Best Buy getting it from a store. We've also found it sometimes on www.cheapstingybargains.com with free shipping. I usually don't buy the extended warranty but my father in law did on his RCA and after 14 mo, he needed it, so that is an iffy call. Hope this helps.
