After Hurricane Irene, we cut up the dead trees and dragged everything to the edge of our yard, and the city came by and picked it all up for free.

If it had been any other time, we'd have to call the city and request pick up, which, depending on what it is, can cost anywhere from $15-$50.

Your other alternative is to cut it up and sell it, pay a tree service to mulch it, or cut it yourself and take it to the land fill.

Your profile doesn't say much about you or your family. I was looking to see if you had a husband. You can clear a tree without a husband, but I learned a long time ago that two can do this kind of job a lot easier than one.

Go out into your neighborhood and see if anyone is cutting down downed trees. If they are ask for their help. You might even find someone that will cut it up for the firewood. If the tree is oak or hickory or mesquite, call some BBQ restaurants ans see if they want the wood for their cooking. They may cut it up for the wood.

What kind of tree is it?

You can do a lot to make it less expensive. If you can't find a neighbor to help, Go to Home Depot and buy a good prunming saw, good pair of loppers and two pair of hand pruners. Find out how long branches can be the city will pick up. Start cutting the branches up in those lengths. Its not that hard to do unless its 100+ outside. (One set of hand pruners is for your daughter so she can help.)

If friends and neighbors come over to help be sure to get their names and invite them over for a "thank you" BBQ or deliver (home made!!!) chocolate cookies to their homes.

Good luck to you and yours.

Unless you have friends or family with a chainsaw and the knowledge of how to take it down you are going to have to call a company. Usually the smaller ones go around putting cards in people's doors that have downed trees. They are cheaper than the big companies but still expensive.

A 40 ft bradford pear cost us 500 to have removed.

After a VERY large and long branch broke off our weeping willow tree, we
hired someone and paid $150 to cut, clean up and get rid of it.
Two days later, a whole tree keeled over and this time we got smart. We
put an ad under FREE on Craigslist. We said they could have the tree
for firewood if they cut it and did the clean up. We had a great guy who
was very happy to do so!
Just don't mention you're a single mom! Better to be very safe!

Yep..You're responsibility :( You will need to call a tree service for removal and depending on if you want the stump removed. Do you use a landscaping company? They may be able to provide a recommendation on tree removal service.

Got any relatives or neighbors with a chainsaw who want some firewood?
If not, if it is a relatively small tree (not a giant live oak or something) then you will probably have to call a service to have it removed. If it is large and not diseased and rotted, you might be able to negotiate with a removal service or someone else to accept the wood itself as part of the price.

We have always had to have a tree service to come and remove our trees because they are huge. It usually costs at least $150 and an extra $50 to grind the stump. If the tree is big enough to have a significant stump, you can drill holes in it and fill will sugar and that will help it to decay faster. That is what we have done on several cedar elms that were about 24" in diameter. The tree service cut them down to ground level, but left the stump. Then we did the drilling and sugar to help the decay process.
