Cheap Tree Removal?

We have a large older tree in our backyard. Our neighbor has commented (nicely) that they are concerned that the branches that hang over their house and yard cause them worry. Now that I look I see that really those branches could damage our house as well if they were to fall. I think the tree needs to be cut down. Does anyone have any suggestions or referrals on how to do this as inexpensively as possible? I have a very tight budget right now. A friend mentioned that someone might do it cheaper if they could have the wood... I just don't know which directions to head. Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

We had some trees cut down a few years ago. We ended up using a Family Tree Care Landscaping, INC. I got about 10 quotes. They did an amazing job, took out the stumps, and you'd never know there were trees there. Very professional.

The tree services give free estimates. Fernando's is licensed, fully insured and bonded but not always reliable ###-###-#### or Herbo in Warrenville is very good but you have to leave a detailed message and address to get the best results ###-###-####. Price is usually depends upon size of the tree. Can you trim the branches back? or split the cost of removal? I'm sure they can give you the best suggestion.

Depending on where you live, my step brother may be willing to "cut" you a deal :).

He's everyday job is to cut down trees and or trim trees, so he knows what he's doing. You can also contact a landscaper and see if they have any suggestions. But what ever you do, make sure they know what they are doing, just don't go hire a neighbor because he has a chainsaw. If a tree falls on the person, they will most likly fiel a claim against your home owners insurance and in the end, it will cost you a lot of moeny.

He just cut down 7-8 trees for my M. and instead of hauling them away, he made a few calls and most of everything that was burnable was picked up by his friends. Therefore he didn't have to dispose of them (which made it cheaper for my M.). I'm not sure what his schedule is or what he charges, but I can ask him for you. Most likely, he wont be able to quote you a price until he sees the trees.

Assuming you live in the burbs, what you can do (regardless of who you hire), you can go on www.freecycle.org and go into your suburb and post an offer for free firewood for the taking.

Most people now a days have fire pits or fire places, so if they come and pick it up, it's less money you have to dish out.

send me an e-mail privately if you'd like me to contact my brother and be sure to let me know what suburb you live in so that I can ask if he's willing to drive out your way.

Before doing anything, I would check with your town to see if you need a permit to cut it down. In my town, if the tree is a certain height, a permit is required. Plus if you have just anyone cut it down, you could be responsible if they get hurt.

I hope you will reconsider cutting the tree down. Instead, I suggest having the tree trimmed, which all responsible homeowners do periodically with their trees. Trees are a resource and have positive impact on our neighborhoods. Whom to call depends on where you live. Just be certain they are bonded/insured because of liability issues. And, there is no such thing as cheap tree care and/or removal. It's just one of those things that as responsible homeowners we must do.

JUST A SUGGESTION: You said the part of this tree hangs over you neighbors house. If you let someone cut down your tree just for the wood, they might not have liability insurance that would cover any damage or any mishaps that may happen while cutting down your tree. So sometimes the cheapest way is not always the best way. Just be careful. You might even ask if they carry Workman's Comp. Insurance because if someone were to get hurt while cutting this tree down, if they don't have insurance you are responsible.
Secondly if your neighbor is really concerned about the branch hanging over his house, any branches that are hanging over on to his property he can have remove at anytime without even asking you.

Just thought you might want to know.

I live in South suburbs, where Manning Brothers Tree Removal is excellent. There are two different businesses--brothers both--and they get the job done. One has a certified arborist for saving trees, but they are equally fantastic.

When I was in Hinsdale we used Dave's Tree service. Angie's List (a local publication)may have some good recomendations based on customer experience. And if cost is an issue ask anyone if they would barter/trade something (babysitting and meals are always good) and try Craigs list for unknown tree guys.

The Care of Trees in Naperville does a really good job. They might be a little more than the M. and pop places, but they are insured- which you definitly want.

I just used Davies tree service. They were great, did a beautiful job. I had them prune many large trees and cut down a large spruce that was overcrowded and dying. But, whomever you go with MAKE SURE THEY ARE COMPLETLEY INSURED. Homeowners insurance will not cover. Good luck.

you get what you pay for. fyi, we just had a HUGE tree removed from our backyard (due to storm damage) and it was $6000. if branches fall on your house and do damage, your insurance should cover it. if they fall due to joe schmoe's improper physics/geometry/whatever-it-is calculation for removal of those branches, you're on your own (as well as your neighbor could sue you).

We recently had a tree removed that was hanging over our driveway and power lines. We called around for estimates. Herbo in Warrenville was the cheapest. Their work was good, quick and they took everything with them. They ground the stump, we planted some grass seed and you can't even tell a tree was there. The grinding of the stump was the most expensive so if you really want to save you can leave the stump until the ecomomy rebounds a bit more. Just a thought.
