I have a baby who is going to daycare starting in November. Does anyone know any good daycares or ones to avoid? Kindercare and new horizons are both near us but I know nothing about them. Can anyone help me find a good place for him? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Kindercare and New Horizons could be good, but you'll have to visit to find out. The director of a day care center makes a big difference, so spend some time with the directors of each to see what they are like. The teachers, of course, also make a huge difference.

(I personally prefer a high quality day care center to in-home care, because the quality of in-home care is so uneven, and with no other adults there, you don't really know what it is happening. In a great daycare center, there are rules and procedures to follow for safety, health, and education. My kids went to a great daycare center, and I have worked in a lot of them, before I became a public school teacher.)

Look for cleanliness, and also for attractive, appealing classrooms. Look for a good ratio -- ideally with infants, it would be 1-3. Minnesota law only requires 1-4, I think. Look for evidence of warmth, affection, enthusiasm, and fun. Look for creativity in the toddler and preschool rooms -- rather than just "cute" projects that are all suppose to look the same.

Hey M.,
I am just now reading some of my old Mamapedia emails, so I apologize if this is too late. I live in Falcon Heights and have had my children in two home daycares as well as Kindercare. We really like where we are currently. Have you heard of Wee Care DayCare? It is the daycare facility for Luther Seminary students. They provide care for children 18 months through preschool. We are not Seminary students, but they take children of non-sem students too. It is just east of Hwy 280, kitty corner from the big HealthPartner's clinic on Como Avenue. If you want the director's name, phone # or email address just let me know. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to find good daycare around here!

Definitely visit a bunch of places. They all have a different feel to them and you need to find one that feels right for you and your child. My son attended Children's Discovery just on the eastern border of Roseville. http://www.childrensdiscoveryacademy.com/ I loved the natural light in the rooms, the wooded surroundings, and the great "teachers". The last time I drove by, they had an infant opening sign out front. I visited a bunch of others. I can't remember much except that the Minneapple Montessori gave me the creeps.

Finding an open infant spot can be a challenge sometimes so definitely start looking as soon as possible.

This would be an excellent home day care to tour. I would say its one of the best home daycares in the state - very professional. They have two large home additions that are exclusively for the daycare. Before going with a chain, I would check this out!
