Daughter Threw Up

Hello-

So this morning around 4:30am my daughter (8) woke up and threw up quite a bit. Late last night she said she had some stomach cramps but that's it. The last time she threw up was around 5am. Then she fell back asleep and woke up around 11:30am. When she first woke up she said her stomach hurt a little but not like when she got sick. She ate some toast w/peanut butter and a couple of these bread rolls. Now (almost 2pm) she said she is feeling better. And she seems ok. No fever, she's eaten....has kept everything down.

Should I let her play outside with her friends? What would you guys do? It's really weird. I don't know why she threw up. Maybe she just ate something that didn't sit well? What do you all think? Her friend a few houses down has already called / come over. I told my daughter maybe later this afternoon she could play but it was my decision and I wanted to make sure her stomach was feeling ok before I decided she could go play. She's just been hanging out watching movies/resting since she woke up.

Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

nope, she might have had a stomache virus and it didnt affect her too badly, its different for everyone, the person she gives it to could be very sick with it., Id wait til tommorow.

I would keep her away from her friends for 24 hours after the last throw up, just to be on the safe side. I'd hate to be responsible for letting the other kids get sick. I had a virus a couple of weeks ago, I felt better after throwing up but the symptoms came back a few hours later, only it was out the other end.

Sounds like the 24 hr stomach bug. We all had it at our house. I made my oldest stay home from school for one day after throwing up and then she was back to her thousand miles per hour self.
Toast, non acidic juices, bananas, ginerale (Vernors is the bubblest and best), Crackers, soup, popsciles, apple slices, pedilite, bread, scrabbled eggs, and cereal are all good on upset tummies.
You are doing just want you should be doing. Let her rest up for 24hrs after the last puke incident or she would relapse and might throw up again. Plus thats alot of energy taken out of her by puking and fighting whatever bug she had. Movies snuggle time, and sleep are the normal over here. Both my parents were EMTs so I like to follow their advice and what they did when i was growing up.

Giver her one more day (today) and see if she is doing well consistently and not running a fever.
There is a nasty stomach bug going around....and I know you don't want to share it. Her friends would then be missing the first part of the year back in school. Not good.

Sounds like it was a short bug. Recently my 1 year old daughter threw up about 3 times when she woke up in the morning about 8AM but never threw-up again after about 9 or 9:30AM so I thought maybe her stomach got upset with the breastmilk. She never had a fever and never acted sick. We went ahead and had our party that night as scheduled and I let her play with the children. She kissed on two young sisters and I didn't think anything about it. I found out the next day that the girls got sick and were vomiting so I guess my daughter actually did get a short-term bug.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't let her play with her friends today just to protect THEM out of the goodness of my heart since she is most likely still contagious even though she feels and acts fine. It is never fun being sick, even for a short time. If she doesn't throw up again, I would let her play tomorrow. Let her watch cartoons. :-)

I would keep her inside until tomorrow... I have been sick and then felt better a few hours later, so then I would go out and do something instead of resting and then it just made me sicker in the end.... I would say if she still feels ok tomorrow then she is probably safe:)

I would be afraid that it would spread to her friend. I would wait one more day.

I agree with Sara B. The 24 hour rule is good to follow as you don't want her rebounding or getting something else on top of this, or spreading it on.

Best to let her rest since school starts tomorrow. This particular stomach flu comes and goes and it's very contagious!

Of course, it could be a virus and I think 24 hours from last incident is what most schools say to avoid contagion.

It could also be a food allergy. I developed an allergy to shrimp (and I loved shrimp up until then) when I was around 10 or so, and that's how it happened. I'd eat it for dinner, wake up in the middle of the night, clear my system and then feel tired but fine. So you might want to remember what she ate in case it happens again. Then you'll have a shot at figuring out what food it is.
