Crochet Hooks

I've been crocheting for years, but I have tendonitis in both of my wrists. A few years ago I found a set of hooks by Provo Craft. It's an ergonomic crochet hook set. It basically has a larger handle, and then hook tips you attach to the end. LOVE these!! It seems to help that I am not having to grip something so small.

But, my problem is it only came with 6 sizes. They are F through K. I would love to have some more sizes, especially the smaller ones & the thread hooks. But, after searching today, the company hasn't made any more sizes :(

So I tried looking for other kinds of ergonomic crochet hooks. I can't find anything similar to what I have! The others don't seem to be as thick of a handle. And I'm not sure how I'd like the egg shaped one...

Have I missed some other awesome hooks out there??? I did see these comfort grips you could slide on, but those aren't that big, just adding padding.

Trying to get back into crocheting more, but my wrists can't handle the regular hooks for too long!

Thanks for any suggestions you can give!

So What Happened?

I thought about trying to make my own.. but I'm not sure how I could do it! I don't know what material(s) I should use, and whether I would have a problem with the hooks twisting, depending on how it was made.

I'll take any suggestions for that too!

I talked to my dad about it today. He is very good with woodworking. We think we have come up with an idea that might work! Basically he would make a handle with a hole thru it so I can just slide a regular hook in it. We'll just have to work out the details for making it snug with each size hook :)

Have you considered making your own grips? Or know someone who could?

Hi S.,
I don't think I can help you with finding your hooks, but I have a suggestion that has worked for me. I got a pair of the fingerless craft gloves for those with arthritis or other ailments that impair your hooking (lol). Love them, no more hand or finger pains or cramps.
Good luck!
Blessings,
W.

I'm a physical therapist and I'm sure you could find some foam built-up handles like someone else mentioned. You could check with your local hospital's occupational therapy dept. or just search online. Medical supply catalogues are online like everything else now. The ones I'm familiar with are a blue foam. If the hole is too wide for your needles, you could probably build up the needles with some duct tape before inserting it into the handle. Hope this helps!

Perhaps you could check with an occupational therapist. They often have larger grips that slide onto things like silverware and toothbrushes for people who are unable to grip. They are also usually experienced with designing built-up handles and have the materials to do it for you. With a diagnosis of tendonitis and a referral from your doctor it might be covered by insurance, at least for the consultation.
