Carpul Tunnel and Tendonitous Pain

I would like to get some advice or ideas on how to minimize the pain in my arms, hands and fingers. I went to see a occupational therapyst who gave me some exercises to do which aren't yet helping. It hurts to do hand exercises. And the tendonitous is not opperable, she didnt know what else I can do at this point, except no hot or cold temps. and not to use anyhting that is too hard to handle or vibrates. Like the lawn mower and my steering wheel. Well that is impossible because I help mow the lawn, I do the dishes, and my steering wheel vibrates and I need to drive to go places. any advice would be great. She suggested I wrap all vibrating things in a towlel, not possible with the steering wheel because its already large. I feel useless and anxious, does any one have experience with this? How long before the healing begins and I can find some relief. I am in constant pain and am doing my exercises through out the day. Thank you. Sincerly C. DM

She said no hot or cold temps... mine told me that in the evening to put a hot pad on my wrist/arm/hand for no more then 30mins because that would help loosen it up and I was able to sleep through the night.

I would find a second opinion!

Have you tried a chiropractor? I used to do a lot of basket weaving and developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It was very Painful!! I went to a chiropractor who worked on my wrists, fingers and arms. It was extremely helpful for relieving the pain and getting my wrists unjammed.

I too have carpal tunnel and have had it for years. Mine is due to typing on a typewriter and computer for over 25 years of being a medical transcriptionist. My orthopaedist recommended and ordered wrist and hand braces for me to wear at night. They really help relieve the pain, but of course, nothing can be done during the day. I would say to see a good orthopaedist, they know more about carpal tunnel and tendonitis than a regular doctor. Good luck and have patience.

go see your dr.ask for cortizone shots-no kidding..i was a chef for 30 yrs...i know all about your pain..all the way up to tennis elbow..then at nite wear the wrist splints-take aleve or motrin 800....i shouldve had the surgery long ago-but no time-when your single an have to work all the time-ice also works great in the morning-then get yourself an ol fashioned metal slinky-and just rotate hands while watchin tv-etc.really this works-i paint apt.now...good luck..

Sorry, you are in so much pain. The tendonitis is due to inflammation. I know you don't know me but may I suggest you check out the following websites. I was surprised to read that you were told no heat/no cold. I've had carpal tunnel for over 20 years and have never had surgery. One of the treatments that always works for me (and given by a therapist) was to fill the sink with hot water. Not too hot, but tolerable. Then prepare an ice pack. Soak your hands/wrists in the hot water for 2 minutes, then switch to the ice for 2 minutes. Repeat for a total of 10 minutes. I was told that switching back and forth helps contract and expand the "tunnels" that run through your wrists to get things flowing again. It always works when I have a flare-up. Also, try getting a massage. The source of pain isn't always in the spot that the pain is felt. Sometimes when you have tight neck/shoulder muscles, it radiates down your arms into your wrists.

Hello,
I would recommend you find a therapy provider that is certified in ASTYM. This is an alternative treatment that can be done pre-surgical. I am an occupational therapist myself and have found this helpful and actually have had a few patients that have not had to proceed with surgery following this.

I had something very similar to what you're describing when I was pregnant with my 2nd. I remember a lot of throbbing pain and numbness in my fingers especially in the mornings. Just eating a bowl of cereal or curling my hair created a lot of numbness and pain. I work at a rehab hospital and asked for some help from the OTs there (mainly for suggestions). I did use some adaptive measures to help with the numbing. So, ask your OT to help with that. That's their job - not just to say, "don't do it" since it's part of your normal routine. I remember what helped me with using a spoon was adding a round foam piece to add as a larger grip. This took some of the tingling away (and lessened my grip). When I went to see my dr, all they recommended was wrist braces. I mainly wore them in the evening (when sleeping) and when I was home. I know some of my issues were because of water retention (and maybe that was the main cause). I also tried chiropractic care - but that did not help. The wrist braces were very expensive (the ones they prescribed anyway) but that did the trick (when I wore them more). It was odd b/c I could almost feel the relief immediately when my son was born. Water retention has always been an issue with me and my pregnancies. Drinking water helps too and decreasing the caffeine. Good luck!

C. - I would highly recommend chiropractic care. I have 2 chiropractors that I work with - 1 in Eagan and 1 in Lakeville/Apple Valley.

You got some good advice already and I seen another response about good nutrition. So many people think it is too good to be true when I share with them what I have found and tend to NOT do their own due diligence to learn more. Knowledge is King!! :)
I did have tendonitous (not anything as severe as you are dealing with) in my right arm for over 6 months. I use Reliv products for the past 3 years and it was just 6 months ago I added a targeted product and ended up getting rid of the tendonitous as well as TMJ (clicking and soreness in my jaw) within 2 months.
The thing I LOVE LOVE LOVE is that I get ALL the nutrition my body needs without me trying to figure out what it needs...it is so simple.
I can not imagine the severity of what you are dealing with - especially as a mother of 4 boys who need you :) I will post my phone number and you can call me or email me if you want to learn about this.

Hello - Boy can I relate to your problem. I was a tomboy and really into sports and stuff as a kid. I started having tendonitous in highschool. I was also told there was nothing they could do and that Wisconsin weather with hot summers and very cold winters were part of the problem. So just like you I suffered for years. I have a job with high computer use so about 4 years ago I was taking pain reliever, doing exercises, making sure to wear my winter gloves, and wearing hand braces with metal supports on both hands during work just to be able to work. Then I got lucky and was introduced to my cure. At a fair my aunt suggested I get a magnetic bracelet. I had seen the metal ones and didn't think they looked nice or would work so I said no. She brought me to a stand that had beaded magnetic bracelets on wire so they were very soft and looked businesslike. They were also very inexpensive so I tried it because I figured that they looked so nice I would wear them even when they didn't work. It started to work so I thought it was my imagination and went online to see if there was anything that could back up that it could be working. I found out that the magnetic bracelets increase circulation through the area they are nearest. I began taking a B complex vitamin and vitamin C to improve my immune system and strengthen my body. I got multiple colors to match work outfits and wore the bracelets only during the day but every day and was able to quit wearing the hand braces with the metal supports and doing the exercises because the pain decreased and most days I was pain free. About a year and a half later I was always pain free and now I only wear the bracelets when I need them about once every couple weeks on a bad day. I buy about 6-10 each year now - not because I need them but to give them away to people when I hear them in pain and have many friends that have had the same results. Hi, I have bouts with tendonitous in both wrists so I can somewhat sympathize with you. At one point when I was in high school the pain was so bad that it hurt to move my fingers at all. And that was with the splints on. My doctor actually put me in a cast for 2 weeks and then back in the splint. It helped a great deal by completely immobilizing my wrists for a while. While I realize this isn't an ideal situation, a short-term annoyance may be a long-term help. Good luck!

Rather than take painkillers for the pain in my leg, I get acupuncture from time to time. As a stay-at-home mom my work never ends and I cannot allow myself to slow down the way that painkillers would cause me to. I also found the exercises my doctor advised me to do absolutely unrealistic and useless so I am glad I found a treatment that actually works and doesn't make me slow down. Perhaps it would work for you!

Try using a brace for your wrist to keep it in the proper place especially when typing and mowing the lawn. This worked for my sister until the exercises that her Dr. gave her started to work. Good luck!

Have you had your thyroid checked? My wrist pain, etc. is due in part to my thyroid disorders. Worth a shot. When my meds are adjusted correctly, the pain simply goes away!

Hi C.,
I'm sorry to hear you are not able to find more relief from your painful condition. I suffer from RA, and one of the added complications from that disease is carpel tunnel. What helps my carpel tunnel is to wear wrist splints (not just wraps - but splits with a hard piece inside) during the night while I am asleep especially, but also during the day when my carpel tunnel is the worst. I have seen that Walgreens is now carrying a higher end wrist splint with 3 velcro tabs, which is what I use - however I got my splits from my PT. Good luck, and I hope you can find some relief from your pain soon.

I suffer from tendonitous pain occasionally - mostly in my right wrist, but this last month it started in my left too - can't hold things or lift anything - I agree it's horrid!

I've tried all the things you mentioned, but what worked the best for me was some ibprofern (can't ever spell that right!) and wrist braces. They have really nice ones at Walgreens - just wearing those for a few days helps tredmenously! They imoblize your wrists so you can lift and carry and hold things but your wrist doesn't move. After a few days of being imbolized I tend to be well enough to go without the braces or meds for quite awhile.

Hi C.,
I have a similar problem. My dh massages my arms, neck, shoulders and hand. I also take ibroprophen for the inflammation. I use a pain rub from Melaleuca, called pain-n-trate. All these things are helping. It was so bad it was hard to do normal things, like holding a towel to dry myself off after a shower. No idea if it can be opperated on but my sister had surgery. good luck

Hi Connie, I have Watenburg's syndrome which is a nerve disorder. Was in physical therapy for over 3 years and went through plenty of tens units, PT, meds, ultrasounds, wraps, I had three splints for each arm. Had surgery done on the right twice, did no good, so they didn't operate on the left.

Take vitamin B. I did, but it has to be the right stuff. Centrum & One A day's are useless. They do not get absorbed into the body. But it does a fantastic job in promoting healthy nerves. Take Glucosamine for muscle and calcium for bone health. But it has to be the right stuff.

My doctors said I would never work again! I have a full-time job data entry! Work a business full-time enjoy stained galss. I pretty much do what I want. I don't type like everyone else, but I can do my job!

It's a mind game. It does take a long time to heal nerve damage and muscles. Work on getting the proper nutrition into your body and the body WILL heal itself!

If you want to learn about what I use, I'd be more than happy to share.! I tried a lot of supplements and wasted a lot of money in the process until a friend of mine told me about these.

Anyways, have you tried wrapping your hand and not using it. I had three splints built for each arm. The one set they made for both arms had hinges in it where the elbow was. I looked like robo cop. But it calmed the area to heal. And then I changed jobs! Got into various jobs that didn't require the doing the things that I had done before.

Supplements and splinting. That's what I would recommend.
It's done wonders for me.

It can be so frustrating! I was almost crippled! and it was when my son was about three & our daughter was just born. I couldn't even feed her without a blanket going over the full cast(had that too) my hubby took care mostly everything! hang in there.. it can get better, it did for me!

This may sound strange....if you get a GOOD maginet bracelet it really helps take away the pain. Before I started wearing one I had a hard time using a siccors. I bought one once while on vacation because I thought it was pretty. I said at the time that it was SUPPOSED to help, but I didn't believe it. I just like the bracelet. I was amazed how it helped. My Dad was having shoulder pain and got one and wore it on the wrist with the shoulder that hurt. It took away his pain too and he could raise arm again. It may not work for everyone, but it sure worked for us.

I had carpal tunnel in both wrists and went to a chiropractor who told me that it is caused by a pinched nerve in the neck. One wrist or arm at a time is in the arm or wrist both is a pinched nerve in the neck. So you may need to do neck exercises as well as wrist exercises.
There is a great isometric exercise for the neck: place your hand on your forehead and using your neck muscles push your hand with your hand push your neck--go to all four sides of your head and use your hand to push against your neck muscles. It strengthens your neck muscles thus takes the pressure of the spine and it is also a relaxation exercise that is good for people who sit at a computer all day. Also do wrist rotations clock-wise and counter clock-wise tight circles 10-20 each direction do them a 3 times a day. This helps to stregethen the muscles in your wrist and take the pressure off the nerves in the wrist and arm.
Good luck I had wrist problems for quite a while and couldn't wear the wrist braces at night because they made my arms itch. I would wake up in the morning with my braces beside me on the bed or wake up a few times a night because of the itching. I was able to wear them during the day.

Alas, someone else has been diagnosised with tendonitis. I have a great Dr and while he says there is no surgery that can help with this issue. Exercise and pain medication can help until it heals. My first bout lasted about a year and then I had a relapse due to my own stupidity and that time it took about 9 months. While you can not get rid of it totally you can take medications and excerises that can help the time period of recovery. And yes the excercise does hurt but it will become less and less overtime. But must warn you that if overdue and reinjure yourself it sets you back to day one. I wish I could offer better news but this is something that just doesn't go away after a few weeks of therapy. Good Luck! and see and 2nd opinion to rule out other possibilities.
