Crib Tent- Smart Safety, or Somehow Cruel?

Ladies - Our little one (8 months old) is very wriggly, he manages to toss and turn while sleeping. He sometimes gets his arms or legs stuck between the crib rails. I thought to get a crib tent to keep him from getting stuck.

The maker is tots in mind, and its called the crib tent II. http://totsinmind.com/

Have any of you used these? Do you think its a good idea? We don't want to see him hurt his hands and feet. But if in keeping him from getting stuck, we are preventing him from learning from experiences, maybe its not such a good idea.

What do you think?

** MORE INFO- we have a bumper in place, but it doesn't seem to help, the bumper collapses under the weight of his hand or foot, and the little appendage gets stuck through the slats.

What can I do next?

If you can sew or know someone who does - what about a taller bumper ? about twice the height of the standard ones ? That way he wouldn't be putting his foot or hand while sleeping on top of it. It might keep it from collapsing and him getting stuck.

we had to get a crib tent when our baby was 14 months old because she climbed out of the crib. That bought us another year...best thing we ever did. Its not cruel. You are just keeping your baby safe :)

We used the crib tent II when our son was younger. He is an extremely active kid who became mobile on the early side. I think there's nothing cruel about making sure they do not get their limbs caught between the bars or fall out of the crib.

If I remember correctly, the crib tent goes on top and prevents them from
climbing out.

I'd go with the crib tent. I also had a mesh bumper for my 4th baby, and I hated it also because it was constantly collapsing making it pretty useless.

We never used a crib tent (though I don't think it's cruel). We used a breathable bumper, which just keeps their arms and legs from going through the slats in the crib. Not sure that you really need a whole tent at this point.

If his arms and legs are getting stuck you need to use breathable bumpers. They work very well to solve that problems. He is too young to learn how not to get stuck while he is playing/sleeping. Get the breathable bumpers to solve the problem.

Crib tents are not recommended because they can be a safety hazard. There have been reports of children getting tangled and chocking while trying to get out of the crib with the crib tent. I would never use one for one of my kids.

I have never used any of these but, could you just use the mesh that covers the crib slats (without using the actual tent part)? I would be worried about having to mess with the tent if you had to pull the baby out of the crib in a hurry (like in the case of a fire) but I think the mesh around the crib is an awesome idea!

Also, have you tried using a crib bumper. At this age I don't think they pose much of a risk, as long as the bumper is securely attached to the crib sides and can help the baby from poking his hands and feet through the slats when he is sleeping.

Maybe a mesh crib bumper like these would be a good option for you, and you can still easily access the baby without have to hassle with an overhead tent.
