11 Month Old Getting "Stuck" in Crib

My daughter will be a yr old on Sept. 18th, and she has been having problems with her legs getting stuck in between the crib rails!! She is on the bigger side (about 25 lbs), but not a concern for the Doc, just at about the 90th% for her size...anyway...
She's been waking up screaming, I go up to see what the problem is, and I see that one of her little legs is stuck outside the crib (on her thigh)....what can I do to stop this, or at least try not to let it happen as much? Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all I want to say thank you to everyone for all the great responses!!
I actually had a mesh type bumper on there and took it off, but I took it off because the velcro kept coming undone!I put it back on the one side she kept getting stuck on (for some reason it's ALWAYS the same side...lol)and it has stopped the problem!! It's always the simplest things that we as parents usually over-look!! Thanks again everyone!! I (and Rowan) appreciate it!!

We had the same problem. Breathable bumpers work great. Can breath through material and they push right down if they try to step on them.

I have the bumpers on because my son's legs kept getting stuck in them as well. They say to take the bumpers off but my son doesn't bother with them or crawl on them. He is very used to them and doesn't bother with them and they keep him from getting sticking his feet out of the crib.

I agree - breathable bumpers are the way to go. She's probably old enough for regular bumpers, but why bother when you can get the mesh ones and not worry about them?

One note on the breathable bumpers - there are two kinds. One fits cribs that have slats all the way around. The other is for cribs with solid ends. Babies R Us has the ones for the slatted cribs. Naturally, we needed the one for solid ends. I was able to find them both at happymothers.com, though. Babies R Us might be cheaper when you factor in shipping, but if you need the solid end bumpers, I recommend happymothers.com. They shipped mine super fast.

That was an issue with my oldest and now my youngest is starting to do the same... but it isn't b/c they are big babies... the older is in the 25% and my youngest is in the 00% (if there were a -% she'd be in it!).

Even bumper pads didn't work for us so I took out some fabric and tightly wove it in and out through the rails. I cut it into about 8 or 10 inch strip and sewed the ends together so it was nice and long. I can't remember exact measurements. But I kept it very tight and wove in and out around the bars. It allowed spaces so if her nose pressed against it she could still breathe, while sitting she could see over it and no more problem with legs getting stuck!

Hope that helps you out!

Time to ditch the crib and get her a toddler bed. My son was at the top of the charts, too...I had to make the switch when he was 8 months and he did awesome!

If you don't want to use a crib bumper, you can also use a crib tent. They have mesh sides that would prevent this, and then you could also use it for a while to prevent her from climbing out of the tent.

They used to recommend bumper pads for this issue, but now we know they pose a suffocation hazard, so what IS recommended and deemed safe is a MESH bumper pad. The mesh is breathable if the baby gets her face up against it while sleeping, and its just cloth, not rigid like a traditional bumper pad, so its collapsible so she cant use it to climb on and jump out. This is what I use in my sons crib. The one I have is called Breathable Baby and you can buy them at Babies R Us and baby stores like that.

Hi S.
My son is 18 months, in the 90th percentile (like your daughter) and always got his legs caught in the crib! Eventually my son stopped. The last time he got both his thighs caught between the rails! I felt so bad for him. I had to use vaseline to help get him out! After that he hasn't done it again. You could try bumper pads, but there is the risk of her using it as leverage to get out.
Anyways best of luck!

onestepahead.com has the breathable bumpers for 30.00, they are worth the money as my daughter got her legs and arms caught three times.. you would think they could come up with a crib that didn't allow limbs to get caught and hurt! Purchase this item, it made me sleep much more as I didn't wake every two hours to check on her!

I just wanted to clear up what seems to be a common misconception within the responses. The SIDS concern with regular bumpers isn't that the baby will roll into them not be able to move away. The concern is that they reduce the airflow inside the crib and may increase the chances of the baby "rebreathing" air. This is just a speculation, since no one really knows the cause. She's almost a year old, so SIDS probably isn't a concern for you anymore.

I have an almost 5 month old and we use a breathable bumper. He was rolling over and getting his little arms and legs stuck too!

I had the same problem with my now-18 month old when she was about 8 mo old. We ended up putting crib bumpers back in the crib until she stopped doing it -- or at least knew what she was doing and could prevent herself from doing it if she wanted to. AT 15 months old her legs started to get stuck into the crib rails again. But this time i believe she was doing it on purpose so i would have to run in there. We treated that one a lot differently. I would go in there, remove her leg (which hurt, i'm sure) and then leave w/o talking or doing anything.

I would suggest a crib tent. It would prevent your daughter from being able to stick her legs through, and will be helpful when/if she tries to climb out of the crib before you move her to a toddler bed. Good luck.

My daughter has the "crib to college" bed. I changed it to a daybed for her at 10 months. She loved it, but she was also walking at 7 months. Your daughter may be ready for the switch, but only you know if she is ready for that, if not the breathable bumbers works great.

My six month old was kicking a lot and often right through the rails so I got a crib bumper. Now, it's fine. If for some reason you cannot attach a bumper you can also just pin some cloth to hang in front of the rails.

Please just verify that your crib is safe and hasn't been recalled. Check the CPSC web site. Seems like other mothers are saying it is common, but it sounds like your crib has a wide opening between the rails.

I use the mesh breathable bumpers on the cribs for my triplets. They sell them at Babies R us for about $25 in different colors. My trio are 10 months old and I love them - they can not use them to climb in the crib - the mesh just collapses.

My daughter is 5 months and the same thing is happening to her. We are going to invest in a mesh crib bumper. Here is an article/URL about it http://meshcribbumper.com/ there is a company who DOES sell one that I was going to purchase, it's one piece that wraps the whole crib covering the lower half of the slats only. http://www.amazon.com/BreathableBaby-Crib-Bumper-Slatted-... This way the baby can breathe, and not put their feet or arms through. This website carries a few versions as well at http://www.securebaby.com Good luck!

We use a regular bumper. My son can move around when he needs to or wants to, so suffocation isn't a concern. I had the bumper off for a while, as was recommended, but when he started getting his limbs stuck, I put it back on and we haven't had a problem.

try the breathable bumpers...they are mesh and taller than regular ones so they start below the mattress and go up a good ways. they worked here
