Crawling - Parker,CO

Ok, so let's be honest! When are babies really supposed to crawl? My first born was born with low muscle tone, so he was not typically developing and did not army crawl until 11 months, 4-point crawl until 20 months and didnt walk until 26 months. So you can see how my vision of a developing baby can be skewed. My daughter is 9 months old and has been army crawling for about a month. She doesnt try to pull to stand yet or anything, but is getting pretty fast with her army crawl. I feel like I am always hearing about babies walking at 9 or 10 months and yet what I read on-line just doesnt seem to match up with what I hear from real mommas. I took her to her 9 month check-up today and the doc said she is borderline normal. Meaning she is still in normal range for her gross motor but is close to being behind. He said normally he would not be concerned, but knowing big brothers history recommended we get an evaluation from birth to 3. Should I be concerned? She put good weight on her legs which my son did not do until well after a year, so I just don't know what to think!

What can I do next?

There is a very wide range for what is 'normal' as far as development goes. My DD was sitting without support by the time she was 3 months old, pulling herself to standing when she was 5 months, scooting around 5 months, crawling around 6, and has been walking since she was 9 months. She is also in the 'normal' range. I wouldn't be too concerned. My ex-roomate's baby started crawling when she was about 11 months old, and was walking at 14 months. She is 2 now and completely 'normal'. :)

My oldest never crawled. She went straight from the inchworm pulling herself along with her hands, (around 6 months I think?) to walking at 15 months.
My son, I don't remember when he started crawling, but he walked at 15 months as well. I wouldn't worry...every kid is different and some never crawl at all.
My nephew was 1 before he could even stand up, and he didn't walk until at least a year and a half, maybe 2.
And if she's late, she's late...what does it do? It's not going to hurt her and just because she's late doesn't mean she won't catch up later.

My first didn't crawl until 10 months or walk until about 14. Baby number two was crawling easily at 5 months, but (I believe) because of undiagnosed Celiac disease which is now diagnosed and under control, just recently started running...not walking, but running...and she will be 12 months in a few weeks. She was cruising around 7 months, though. So, I just think babies can be incredibly different, even within the same family. I don't think you have any concern...my "slow" one also had a huge vocabulary at 14 months, to make up for not walking until then...and all my "quick" one does is say "da da! da da!" hee hee, I love them both.

She sounds perfectly normal to me. I would not worry. Some crawl early
some late. Same for walkiing. Just enjoy her.

All babies are definitely different, so try not to compare yours to others. Both of my twins started crawling at seven months. One walked at nine months and his brother walked at ten months. I don't think my second would've started walking if he didn't see his brother doing it.

My first (boy) army crawled/scooted around 9 months. Crawled at 11 months. Walked at 15 months - nobody ever suggested he had any delays.

My second (boy) crawled at 8 months, walked at 12 months.

My third (girl) crawled at 6 months, walked (ran) at 10 months and hasn't slowed down since.

Well, I had one that crawled at 7 months and took his first step at 10 months. Then I had one who crawled at 11 months and didn't walk until 17.5 months. Both were on opposite ends of the normal range. Keep watching and encouraging her. When you see her pulling up and cruising then get her a walking toy to push. It's pretty common for boys be quicker to learn the motor skills and girls to catch on faster with talking--but there is a lot of room for variation.

I think your doctor is correct. Don't worry.

Can she sit up on her own? You only talk about low crawling or army crawling? Sometimes for the crawling crawling they start from the sit up position and then kinda dive into it.

My daughter crawled around this age and my doctor had no concerns. It sounds like your ped's concerns stem from your son's history IMO. My daughter didn't walk until 13-14 months which is completely normal.

Trust your doctor and what you read on reputable websites. Those "my child walked at 9 months" are extremely rare but do stand out in our minds. Don't let those outliers make you question studies that are done on large groups of children. My son crawled at about 10 months and walked at almost 14 months. But when he did, he perfected it very quickly. Some kids wait until they are pretty sure they can do it and other just find ways of doing things that work for them and they stick with it!

My son started to crawl at 6 1/2 months and took his first step at 11 months. He didn't "offically walk unti he turned 1. I tend to get nervous when I read the milestones of where the "professionals" think that a child is supposed to be at a certain age. Each child is different. She is fine. As long as she up to speed with everything else, I would worry too much.

i don't think your girl's behind at all, but i guess to be safe get the ECI eval done so you'll feel better. but i'm pretty positive your girl's right on track...esp like you said she's bearing weight on her sweet little legs (hee hee i love 9 month olds!!)

Babies are supposed to crawl when they are ready to crawl. :-) Actually, there are some who skip crawling and go straight to walking; I worked at a daycare where a baby did just that. He would not ever crawl, ever, and the infant teachers were trying their hardest to encourage him to crawl, but he never did. Then one day he started standing himself up against the furniture, he started using the walker, and then at about 11 months he started walking--no crawling at all.

My daughter army-crawled for months and only did a regular crawl for about a month or two before she started walking at 14 months. My son started crawling at six months and walking at 10 months. So I say that she's probably fine, and wait a few more months before you start to get worried. :-)

My son is almost 13 months and he doesn't walk. He started crawling at around 11 months and pulling himself up at 11.5 and is barely cruising the furniture now. I am not worried. My oldest walked one week after he turned one and only crawled for about 2 weeks. My middle crawled at around 7 months and walked at 10 months. Your dr is probably being cautious but he is the expert so you should trust him. But to me she sounds normal to me.

My son had very early milestones, so it does happen that babies do these things early. However, I'm not sure it's the norm...that's why there is a range. Your Dr. doesn't sound terribly concerned, but that he's just looking into things due to history. If I were you, I would not be concerned until your Dr. or another Dr. give you a reason to be.
