How Long Did Your Baby Crawl?

My baby has been crawling since he was 5 months so I thought that he would be walking early, but he turns one in a few weeks and he has no interest in walking at all. It took my daughter five months after crawling to walk. I am not really worried about it but I would really like for him to start walking so I can hold both of their hands and take them for a walk instead of holding him or lugging out the stroller. How long did it take your babies to learn to walk?

It's hard to not compare the two babies; however, as you've found out, they each have their own ideas of when they should do things. My son started walking at 10 mos and his cousin (who's a week younger) didnt' start crawling until 12 months or so. In both cases, they were both considered completely within normal limits and the peds were not worried (the same couldn't be said for my SIL though...) Now that they're both two, they both walk and run, etc..

A lot of babies take their time. The good thing about crawling is that it supposedly boosts the brain's power. Talk to your ped at his 12 mos visit.

Y.,
If he is not walking by 16 months you can call your local ECI program (1-800-628-5115 to find one closest to you) and they will do an evaluation in your home and, if nothing else, give a few ideas of what can be done. As in the other responses children's development is a range and they are all unique to themselves. Enjoy and watch the joy of your child!

Don't worry. Every child is different. My 3 year old did not crawl until he was 11 months and did not walk until 17 months. My 19 month old crawled at 10 months and was walking at 11 months. The typical walking range is 10-19 months so you have plenty of time before you need to do any worrying. One thing that did help my eldest, was to put his favourite toys on the couch or a low table so that he had to stand to play with them . I spread them out so he had to learn to cruise to get to each toy.

My daughter started crawling, pulling up, and cruising around the table or couch within a week of each other when she was 6 months old. Everyone said she'd walk early because of that. Well by her bday month she had never stood without holding onto something and then one week before her first bday she took her first steps although she still preferred to crawl. Soon after her bday though she took off walking and hasn't looked back.

They all have their own time frame. The "normal" time frame for kids to begin walking is sometime between 8 and 18 months.

My first did everything "late" -- army-crawled at 9 mo, crawled the regular way at 11 mo, and didn't walk until 17 mo. My second rolled everywhere at 6 months, crawled around 8 or 9 months, was climbing at 11 months, and didn't bother with walking until 15 months. (However both said their first words by 7 months, and had a 50+ word vocabulary by 15 months -- they seem to have done things a little backwards!)

My sister's kids walked at 8 and 10 months. They hardly crawled at all. Maybe a month.

It will happen!

All children go at their own pace. If he is not walking within 4-6 months, then ask you pediatrician. Though my sister is now a grandmother, my mom said she did not walk until she was 18 months old. She was slow at everything, walking, talking, training, etc., yet she was great in school and is a very successful adult. She was the second child and the first girl (several grandsons in the family) so she was held often and just had no desire to walk. One thing certain, she did learn to walk. Enjoy that baby, once he is walking you may wish you could carry him again!
