Cooking with Natural Sweeteners

I am trying to cut the sugar habit and have been trying some recipes using stevia. They turn out OK but was wondering if anyone can suggest other natural sweeteners (not artificial like Splenda) that work well. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Well, my husband is Diabetic and the only sweetner we use is Splenda. I know you said anything other than Splenda but I use the "Baking Splenda" and it works great in recipes and taste like real sugar. I am not sure why you don't like it but Baking Splenda is great with recipes.

Thanks, D.

Hi J.,

I recently purchased, but have not used yet, Lakanto. You can order this from the Body Ecology website.

If you try it, I'd like to know your thoughts.

Blessings!
K. :-)

I have been trying to use natural sweeteners too, and the ones that I use right now are real maple syrup, honey (preferably raw) and blackstrap molasses (much higher nutritional content than the regular stuff). However, I haven't done much baking with any of these - we use them mainly for condiments. I've been trying to get away from white flour, so that pretty much cuts out most desserts even if I'm using natural sweeteners - desserts made with whole wheat flour just don't cut it!! But best of luck!!!

I want to start doing this too. I tried something for the first time yesterday. I used orange juice in my pancake batter instead of sugar and they were even better that way! They were so tasty and had a gorgeous orange-tan color.

I know juices can be used as a sweetener replacement for a lot of things. A lot of vegans don't use sugar and so you may want to try looking in a vegan baking book for ideas. I recommend The Joy Of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. I think she even has a section that talks about sugar alternatives.

Hi J.,

Xylitol (pronounced w/ a "Z") is a natural sugar derived from the birch tree and is actually good for your teeth. You can use it as a 1:1 replacement for sugar. It's great for baking and has a lower glycemic index than refined cane sugar.

Happy baking! :)
