Container Gardens

Has anyone had success growing green beans and snap peas in pots? I pretty much have a black thumb when it comes to plants, but I had moderate success with strawberries (in strawberry pots) and mini tomatoes (3 varieties in one large pot) last summer. I'll do those again this summer, and want to add "blue lake" green beans and snap peas this summer. We don't have a good place for an in-ground garden, so the new additions will also be in pots on the driveway or patio. Any tips/suggestions? What size pots did you use for bush beans and how many seeds did you plant per pot? Any other fool-proof veggies that do well in pots? Seattle temps are iffy through May, so a shorter growing period is best.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Go to a garden store. Ask the clerk there.
Get a good sized container pot... probably around 16" diameter at least or more, and some bags of soil. Ask the clerk what else you need. And of course, get packets of seeds, of what you want to grow. And get general purpose fertilizer.

Beans are easy. (bush type or vines), as well as peas. You need poles for it to climb on. They have vines and grow upward.

Mini tomatoes are easy in pots too.

Herbs are easy to in pots.

You can start to plant... as Spring approaches. Or ask the garden store clerk.

The pots/plants will need sun.

We did beans in a pot last summer and they worked well. Just be sure to stake them.

Butter lettuce also worked well. Basil from seed did not. Chives/bunch onions and parsley grew fantastic!

Ikea has relatively cheap large terracotta pots. I think they were $5 for at least 12" across.

I had better luck with my peas and beans in a square foot garden than I did in pots. I used the big plastic pots that trees come in at the nursery. I think they were 2 feet across, which was enough space to put two rows of peas or beans in the widest part with lettuce and parsley filling in the sides. Keep in mind that driveways reflect the sun and get really hot, which can affect how well your potted plants grow. You will have to compensate for that. I couldn't get anything to grow in containers until I moved the containers off of the cement and into the flower bed. Best of luck and happy gardening!
