My son is 19 months old and he has had this constipation problem since he was 11 months old and this is about the time we switched him to whole milk he trys to go and he turns red as blood and all he get is a few little balls bless his heart it really hurts him and ive tryed everything to get him back to normal any suggestions would really be appreciated he goes days without doing his business and sometimes he looks to be normal then he right back to his old ways again please help im desparate He has been on miralax for a while but if he sees me put it in his cup he wont drink it.
I just went to the Dr for this on Tues for my 13 month old. She put him on Miralax. We also are taking dairy out of his diet totally for 2 weeks. Then we will try working it back in slowly to see if he can better tolerate it.
I add half a cap of the miralax to 4 ozs of liquid. My son wont drink juice, so I give him soy milk and add it to that. He doesnt notice its there and his fits and tears when he had a BM are gone after just 2 days.
I was afriad that his fits had become behavioral because he was fearful even to pass gas. But the past 2 days have had no issue. Yesterday he had 7 poopy diapers. I think he cleared his system.

I agree with Brione and I would remove all dairy from his diet until he's back to normal. Then slowly add dairy products, no raw milk, and see what happens. Dairy is the #1 hardest thing for humans to digest.

Hi. My daughter is now 3 1/2 yrs old and has had constipation issues since birth. She has been on Miralax (medication) since she was about 2 months old. I SWEAR by this medicine. And the best part is,... its now OVER THE COUNTER!!! I have tried EVERYTHING else... juices, prunes, suppositories... etc. NOTHING else worked so i highly recommend MIRALAX. Call your doc or ask the pharmacist how much to give your chold based on weight.
Good Luck.

Hi, Have you talked with your pediatrician about this? What about old fashioned apple juice or apple sauce,or plain old water to keep his system hydrated. I've had similar problems, my sons now 8 and I still watch his system, and apples does the trick. I think the doctor also recommeneded a little Milk of mag too,I don't remember trying this though, I think he hated the taste. Ask your Doctor, again if you've already asked. Keep pushing that you're a concerned parent. Good luck!!

Have you spoke with your child's pediatrician? He/she may have some helpful hints. Also, if you give your child a cup of apple juice a day and maybe twice a week a jar of the baby food prunes...that should help (it works with my grandson). Good luck

My daughter had issues at that age too. Try increasing liquids (water, diluted juice, or even more milk). Increase fiber intake also. Some good sources are dried fruits (apricots esp.), beans, and veggies. But, the fiber needs the liquid to bind to and keep the stool soft, so extra liquid is the real key.
Good luck!

Both my children have gone through this. I usually give them straight apple juice, about 4 or so ounces and it does the trick. You should try and give him apple juice once every couple of days to help keep him regular. I give my kids apple juice almost everyday, but I water it down. It still works!
Good Luck!

My friend's daughter has a sensitivity to dairy. It's not an allergy or lactose intolerance but her body just doesn't tolerate dairy well. It makes her very constipated. My friend has taken all dairy out her daughter's diet and she no longer has the constipation problems, and she doesn't have to be on any medications. She's found lots of other ways to get her daughter calcium and vitamin D, like orange juice and tomatoes. There are actually many better sources of calcium than milk. I would try a dairy-free diet (no milk, yogurt, butter, cheese, etc) for a week or two and see how he does (be sure to check labels because there is dairy or whey in a lot of products). Then you can slowly add dairy back into his diet to see what effects. You may find that he can handle a little dairy or none at all or it might not be dairy at all. My daughter has the exact opposite problem with dairy- too much and she gets diarrhea. So I took all dairy out of her diet for 2 weeks and slowly added it back in and found out what the right balance is for her so now we can avoid her getting too much. Good luck.

My daughters Dr. told me to put benefiber in her juice everyday. He said to use the adult reccomended dose. I did it everyday for a month, then stopped just to see how she was doing on her own. It worked great! Every so often I give it to her again when she seems to be having trouble.
As with everything I would check with your Ped first before trying anything.
Good Luck!

Have you spoke to your pedi about this problem. My son who is only 1 week old has been constipated also. I was worried, as all new moms are and called my pedi. Thankfully, Tristan had a sample in his diaper when we got to the pedi. Anyways, the doctor said that some babies and children just have a problem with hard poops and he gave me a prescription for stool softner. He said that he could be on it for a few weeks to a few years, depending on how his little body breaks up formula and food. It has worked so far. Hope things get better for your little guy.

I had the same problem with my son, now 6 years. Try Miralax, now available over the counter. Just add it to his favorite drink daily. Wheat germ (from grocery store) added to food (cereal, ice cream, etc) can help also. If that doesn't work (which it should), talk to your pediatrician about Lactulose. Good luck, I know it's a difficult problem.

children's glycerine tablets from the drugstore. they're in a tiny white bottle, which you need to keep in the fridge so they don't melt. worked for all four of my kids when they were little. acts as a natural "lube". usually they don't like something foreign in there so they try to get it out quickly, also expelling other stuff....works like a charm. good luck!

Miralax-pediatrician reccommended to me for my daughter. They now sell over the counter. i could give my duaghter when she was your son's age anywhere from 1-2 tsps all the way up to the fill line on the dosing cup that comes with it. It just depends on what is needed. Clean out or maintenance. It works! with no cramping ect.
I thought apples were binding? Because when a baby has diarrhea you put them on the BRAT diet, which is Banana's, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.

my daughter would hold it in for days it seemed and then "let go" maybe once or twice a week. Now that it's summer and berries are plentiful in some areas so we pick blackberries almost every day. I let here eat as many as she wants, then she has no choice but to do her business. They seem to have a very powerful affect on her and her brother, blueberries do as well but all the crops were wiped out by the Easter freeze. Plus blackberries are free when you can find patches of them on the roadside.
Hope I could help.

My daughter had a big problem with constipation when I first started her on regular foods. Try mixing a little bit of prune juice with water. It doesn't take much and it works pretty good. So I gave her a small bit of prune juice with mostly water daily for a few days. I don't like her taking meds or laxitives because of the stimulants. Hope this helps.

Hi,
The best care for constipation I found for my 4 children is a diet of lots of water or herbal tea, fruits and whole grains.
the # 1 thing was for my children is to be adjusted by a Doctor of Chiropractic. We have the best pediatric Chiropractor in the world. Within a Hour after the adjustment the kids would have relief. Good Luck

My son has some constipation problems and the Little Tummy's Laxitive drops worked great. But I wonder how much milk you are giving him? I know they say too much milk products, such as cheese, milk, and yogurt can make a child constipated. I would suggest maybe cutting down one less sippy of milk during the day. Hope this is of some help.

Mineral Oil. Yep, mineral oil. My pediatrician recommended Miralax, but my daughter hated the taste and I wasn't too happy when I researched the side effects.
I mentioned the issue to my mother, a nurse and mom for 40+ years and she told me that just a squirt of mineral oil in juice would work. It changed things overnight. It is almost tasteless.
I also gave my daughter Lactaid instead of milk and dried prunes, raisins, and apricots at breakfast. It was never an issue again.
