Hello,

i have so much Baby Stuff, like Cribs (yes cribs:) ) Car Seat, Toys that i was thinking about selling them in a consignment store. I tried craigslist but that just frustrates me because people tell me they are coming to pick it up and i wait and wait and nobody shows up. anyways so my question is i heard about kid to kid where they pay you upfront and than the regular consignment stores where they sell it first and then pay you. Any experience on which one is better? Everything i have is in really great condition and almost like new. We live close to the White Rabbit. Anybody every sold anything there? So any advise would be great. Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

try the clothes horse. they just moved to mill pond i think its called off great bridge near the corner of first colonial and great bridge. rock a bye baby is on holland near diana lee rd. you mentioned kid to kid. there is another on the corner of dam neck and general booth but its small. then another small one on battlefield near the locks. when the weather gets warm you can try a yard sale. if you post about it in craigslist in the baby category and the yard sale category you should get a great turn out. remember to list your main stuff. most baby stores wont take thinks that dont look brand new or at least have a popular designer like old navy the childrens place or osh kosh for clothes and s for big items i thik it depends on the room they have availabl. call these places up and ask them before you haul your stuff in. care seats have to be less than i think 3 years old for them to take them. good luck.

Hi Anika!

I am in your boat...we are purging our baby stuff as our youngest outgrows things. I have sold at Kid to Kid, and to be honest, as great of a store as it is, they pay next to nothing for your stuff. And they are really selective about what they will take, if there is any makr or stain, they won't take it. If they already have a certain amount of that item, they wont' take it, even if it's in perfect condition. They pay you about 10-25% of the original value then turn around and sell it for 50% of the original value. Every time I have gone, they have only bought about half of my stuff, which still leaves me with a car full of baby stuff and no where to put it. Frustrating when you want to get something done and out of your house! Anyway, I started donating everything....but we still get money back as I write it all off in our taxes. Write out an itemized list of everything you have, condition, original and current value....when you donate stuff (in our neighborhood all of those places actually come weekly to pick stuff up, it doesn't get any easier than leaving it on your doorstep!) and save that list along with the receipt you are given at pickup. You can claim all of it on your taxes, and though it's not a 1:1 return, you will do better than selling to a consignment store for a fraction of the item's current value :) Plus, no more carting baby stuff all over town! Any store you want to donate to (salvation army, DAV, samaratian house, etc) will come to your house to pick up what you have, they are just a phone call away. Hope that helps!

Hi Anika,

Consignment shops are great! I used them alot when my children were small. We also shopped at some pretty nice consignment shops for school clothes. The niceer consignment shops will most likely ask for an appointment and are very specific about quality of clothing that they accept. Keep in mind that if Spring is around the corner then they will be accepting spring and summer clothing. I only knew of one consignment shop that paid upfront and that was Once Upon a Time in Crofton, Md. They didn't pay much though. Most consignment shops call you when your things have been sold and tell you how much money you made. Oh and it's usually a 50/50 agreement that you have to sign. I would search around or call first to see who would pay the most. Consignments shops that are in a busy location move their merchandise faster. There is one consignment shop on Main Street and Warwick Avenue in Newport News.

Good Luck!

I shop at both Kid 2 Kid and The Clothes Horse. I dont' know which is a better way to consign, but I generally find that K2K is busier than The Clothes Horse, but I like to browse TCH more as it's not so cramped...

Sorry I'm not much help, but try the traditional way in The Clothes Horse or some other like it, then if your items don't sell, you can always try the other stores. So either way, you won't lose.

I would call to see if these stores are still accepting children's items. There is a new law regulating the lead and pthalate levels in children's items that is being applied retroactively. I'm not sure if they are still applying it to resellers or not. I've seen conflicting reports. If you are unable to consign your items, write your representatives about how CPSIA or the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act has negatively impacted you. These regulations go into effect Feb 10, 2009, and many places are gearing up by not accepting "new" used items. http://nationalbankruptcyday.com/
