We have At&t Uverse. We never had cable before because it was so expensive just for basic channels. We finally decided to try out uverse, after we cancelled blockbuster.
The service is great, we have been really happy. Of course, I do not have cable to compare to, but we love being able to record shows, etc. It's nice for saving kid movies too.
As far as installation goes, here's my thoughts. Figure out before hand where you want things to be.
They will install one main box, that is the brains of the setup. I believe it has to be connected to your outside phone box with a phone cable. It can be anywhere in your house. We chose to put it in the finished basement, so it's out of the way. They mounted a stick on phone box to the wall, which we will change later. That hooks into the brain I think. Our computers happen to be right above that spot upstairs, and the jack is right there too.
The installers use ethernet cables that already have the plug head on the end that goes into the wall/computer. They may suggest you use wireless usb to connect to your internet. They provide them too, I believe as part of the service. Because they are uverse-only installers, they don't have all the same tools as the regular service and repair guys/gals.
We wanted phone cords/ethernet cords. We have easy access to the basement ceiling, so my husband pre-drilled holes (big enough for the ethernet plug to fit through) that they could run cables to the upstairs through. (We already had installed ethernet ports with our phone jack at the computer area.) You might be able to do something similar near existing jacks/cable outlets. If you're cable system uses cat 5, as far as tv goes, they should be able to hook right up to that (the incoming cable/uverse) and your tv's should work fine.
If you have a friend who is handy with electrical/phone stuff, see if they can take a look. It will make the job go quicker, and you will have better control over where the wiring will be. I hope that these installers are doing better now that the service has been out a while.
If you have any problems, you can call and have them come back. Our neighbor had a defective tv box, and they brought him a new one within a few days.
All of our other neighbors (4) have it now too, the last one yesterday.
You might also check their website, because I thought there was a diagram of how it all works.
I hope that helps. It's not really complicated, but it takes them some time to install, they will program the remotes for your tv's, and everything should be working when they are done.
good luck
