I don't drink coffee - my husband does - and he is SOOO NOT a coffee snob. But I try different brands and blends...I love the smell just don't like the taste.

We do NOT have a coffee grinder - no whole bean brands...we have the Brew Station - which works for him.

I've tried Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Chock full of nuts, Folgers, etc. he thought the Dunkin Donuts was bitter. I don't know coffees - so tell me - what do you drink? I know my husband likes "dark" coffee - I guess this means more caffeine?

Wanna try and school me?

thanks!!

What can I do next?

I like Starbucks and Green Mountain. When I could afford it I also got Gevalia mail ordered. They have a nice variety of coffees from beans grown around the world.

As far as a dark roast, it has nothing to do with caffeine. It has to do with the way the beans are roasted and a dark roast has a stronger heartier taste than a light roast.

I like dark roast coffee as well, and grind extra fine to make coffee that's nice and rich, like mud, mmm. Trader Joes French Roast, Seattles Best French Roast are my favorites. I buy the whole beans and grind them in the store.

I have only been drinking coffee (off and on) since 2007, when I was a FT employee & FT mom to a newborn.

I have done Folgers, Dunkin Donuts (bought 3 bags from the drive thru), and the Costco Kirkland brand, but I actually splurge a bit now and buy coffee from a Guatemalan co-op that is administered by a priest-friend of my grandparents. It is organic, sustainable, and, most importantly for me, pays the farmers a very fair price for their labor.

I'm no help... I drink Food Lion brand 1/2 caff ;)

BUT, my BFF is a coffee connoisseur , and she loooves her Keruig and sampling different coffee's. Her favs are the coconut Hawaiian one (it's darker but has a sweet offset to the darkness) and the plain old Donut Shop coffee... she THOUGHT it was going to taste like Dunkin Donuts coffee (which she doesn't like either), but says it's the best coffee EVER. She's from NY, she likes a good greasy spoon cup o' joe ;)

Kirkland Colombian, from Costco. Really if you are ending up with bitter it could be your coffee maker.

I like Dunkin Donuts... which it sounds like you've tried. One thing my Dad does is to put a pinch of cinnamon in the coffe (grounds before you brew it). It makes it less bitter. Worth a try?

It sometimes depends on what's on sale and I like flavored coffees, like Hazelnut and Vanilla. Lately I've been a little more sensitive about free trade and rainforest issues and have started reading labels. I'm willing to pay a little more to protect the environment and the international workers, but it's hard to find the flavors I like in free trade and environmentally protective coffees. I'm open to suggestions!

If your husband likes dark roasted coffee, try Peet's Coffee. It's a company based in the San Francisco area and they are known for their dark-roasted coffee and fanatical quality control. They have a cult-like following here. I will drink Starbucks if I have to, but if I have a choice, I will go with Peet's every time!

Just so you know, the roast does not determine the amount of caffeine in the coffee, it is simply the taste that is affected. Generally, the higher the quality of the coffee, the less caffeine is present. Cheap coffees use a lower-quality bean, which contains a lot of caffeine and can make the taste quite bitter.

I don't think there's a Peet's Coffee near you, but you can order online at peets.com. Often times you'll get it within a few days of roasting - the smell is divine. :) Normally I buy Major Dickason's blend, but I do love their Holiday blend this year (drinking some now!).

I think it also depends on how much you use per cup or pot. I use one table spoon per two cups (a little over the edge of the spoon). I like Folders classic blend and I always receive compliments when I make a pot for family and friends. I don't like it too strong like Starbucks coffee. I also like Dunkin Donuts coffee and 7 eleven (when I stop). The best coffee I have ever had was in Jamaica, it sells for about $15.00 a lb (back in 2000) so it is rare that I get it now.

Like you, I don't like coffee, no matter how weak, hot or cold, or adding milk, etc. LOVE the smell and sometimes a hint of mocha flavor or something coffee like hint of flavor. I drink International Foods, (now is Maxwell House) Cafe Fransais or Cafe Vienna are my favorite flavors and have one cup a day, sometimes two. Have a lot of calories.

we prefer Maxwell House and usually get the South Pacific blend. I used to only drink Folgers but then my parents got me into Maxwell House and now that is all we buy. Of course, one of the "big" containers lasts us almost 2 months. we dont drink coffee often.

We like The Roasterie. I know it is here in Kansas City, so not sure you may be able to get that in VA. It is great. I also hate Dunkin Donuts, not sure what all the hype is about on that one. And Folgers Black Silk is great for a strong coffee. We just recently got a coffee grinder, and we like it, but I don't think it is THAT much of a difference in the already ground that you get at the store. I need schooled in coffee lingo too. Guess I'll head to Starbucks for that. BTW if you like apple cider you should try that from Starbucks, I hardly ever go there but went a while back, and wanted a hot drink but not coffee. Yummy it is so good.

Ahh... the Terrazo (sp?) that Gevalia used to sell was divine! We stopped getting Gevalia deliveries a few years ago though. Good coffee, just got tired of keeping track of shipments. We generally like Starbuck's also. We grind the beans ourselves and make it true to directions (too little and it doesn't taste right), which means, basically, a coffee scoop (actual coffee scoop) per cup brewed plus a little extra. Basically, you are supposed to use a scoop per 6 oz cup, but who owns a 6 oz coffee cup?!! If I fill the water to the 8 cup mark, I use 9 scoops of coffee.

My husband likes the darker roasts, too. We love the Christmas and Thanksgiving blends that Starbuck's puts out. But my favorite is the Reindeer blend that Caribou coffee sells at this time of year only. Their Obsidian dark roast is my absolute favorite. I like most of the Mocha Java out there---Jittery Joe's has a good one.
I add some half and half to my coffee, but no sugar.

I read somewhere, and believe from my own experience (when the home coffee pot starts to get old and not heat the water as hot as it once did), that the temperature of the water used in the brewing process has a profound effect on the taste of the coffee. When you get a good bean made with the right brew process it is phenomenal. Otherwise, it can be bitter and yuck. I think the BrewStation is Hamilton Beach, right? We had one of those for a while. Where you just put your cup underneath and press the bar to deliver coffee into your cup--no carafe involved, so no burned taste after it finishes brewing.... it was good, until it started getting old. Then the coffee started being less enjoyable for us. You don't really notice it right away... it's a process. Eventually it just isn't good and the coffee pot must go! lol

Dunkin Donuts is ok. But not my first choice.

Oh.. we tried Peet's, but it didn't rock my world or anything. Not bad, just not great, to us.

Ok you'll laugh at me. I love to smell coffee but rarely will I drink it.

My hubby drinks instant Folgers daily.

If we have guests, I'll brew some Starbucks.

Dark doesn't mean "more caffeine." You can get a half-caff or caffeine-free dark roast.

I choose my beans from Price Chopper and grind them right there in the store for my French press (coarse ground). I like dark roast, so I choose espresso dark roast plus the dark French decaff and blend them together. I think the brand is Green Mountain. They have several different blends and roasts and you can buy some in each flavor to sample them so as not to waste them. Just be sure to label each bag.
