Clothing Suggestions for My "Chunk of Love" Baby

My infant daughter is wonderfully healthy... and off the charts for her age. She's almost a year old & over 25 pounds! Her chubby legs and arms are adorable - we call her our "chunk of love"! But the problem is that I can't find any sleepers that will fit her. They are all too skinny. I've even gone up to the 18mo. sizes and they are too tight around her middle/thighs and too long in the legs. A few have even been too tight in the crotch area and caused her diaper leak out the top overnight. I currently use the one piece play outfits with socks, but she pulls of the socks frequently which this time of year is not preferred. She has senstive skin (eczema) so cotton would be preferred over fleece/polyester.

And one more challenge... onesies. Do any of you know a company that puts 'real' tags in theirs? She had the bad reaction to the Carter's tagless onesies (search on this topic if you haven't heard - it's caused my daughter and a lot of other babies bad reactions!). The other brands tagless onesies aren't quite as bad, but still can irritate her. I'd love to find one that didn't have any silk-screened print in the back... specifically plain white to wear as an under layer in cold weather. Suggestions? Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the suggestions and advice, I really appreciate it. So here's what I have done so far... For pj's: I have found one 2-piece that I could squeeze her into, still a little tight, but works for now. I'm looking for others & tried Children's Place, but they must of changed their cut, because footed pj's looked very skinny like the others. For the onesies: Turned them inside out (don't know why I didn't think of this!?!). It has helped with the irritation on her back. Still haven't found any regular tagged onesies, but the inside out thing works fine for under-onesies. I'm thinking about sewing some clothes for her (just have to find the time!). And the suggestion of summer capri pants being shorter for her is great! I'll give that a try. For now, leggings and swing tops have been great!

If it's just the writing that irritates her skin, I would buy iron on fabric applique and apply it to a piece of cotton. You could iron on a cotton square on all her clothes very quickly.

Also, my children have never liked wearing the nighttime pj's. I just put them in sweat shirts and pants to sleep. For the summer, my kids would always be so hot and they would sweat in everything. I just let them sleep in their diaper or underwear. It prevents them from sweating in their sleep and exacerbating the eczema. Cotton T-shirts and shorts for pj's works too.

My kids would never keep their blankets on while sleeping, so I put on regular sweat outfits or cotton shirts/shorts for sleeping to keep them warm. I used to keep a small space heater and fan in their room to regulate the temp on top of central air.

My son had the same issues, if you saw a picture of him you'd think omg whats that mom doing to her baby? He was huge. We stopped buying the one piece outfits and bought seperates. Good Luck. When he started walking he lost that fat, the only place on him now is his little tiny roll around his tummy.

Sorry, mom, but it is definitely time to move on to different types of sleep and probably day wear. Nightgowns or two piece pajamas that will not bind her and can be hemmed up in the legs. You might try putting her in long underwear bottoms to sleep with knee socks that won't pull off her feet so easily at night.
As for onesies it is hard to get them in 100% cotton anymore from what I have heard. Her size is making it difficult for you as well. I know they come in 18 month and 1 and 2 toddler. I think you can search this out online. I would just go to white cotton tee shirts in a size larger than she is wearing in clothes. With the diapers or underwear she is wearing the only real added warmth you are looking for is for her chest anyway.

i know what you are going through. my youngest and only boy was 25 lbs at 5 months!!! my only recourse was to make a lot of his clothes. if this is not an option, maybe a friend or relative can sew.

good luck

we had the same problem with my first & i'm guessing our second will be the same level of chunkiness. our daughter was around 1 during the summer, so we didn't have to worry about sleepers necessarily. but for her pj's during the summer, i went to target & bought some tank tops & then the stretchy almost capri cotton pants; basically like sleeveless pajamas. it worked well! i'm sure you could do the same with stretchy pants/leggins & cotton long sleeve t shirts? this past winter we found pajamas that are the one piece outfit, but that don't have the feet in them. i also found 2 piece fleece pajamas; i believe carter's makes most of them (i find them at a 2nd hand store for about $4 each). if i remember correctly, the do have a tag.

we gave up on onesies after the 18 month size...but have you tried the onesie extenders? we found them in this baby & child safety "stuff" magazine we get in the mail (for the life of me i can't remember what it's called right now, of course, sorry!). but know that they are out there! maybe google 'onesie extenders' or something like that. they worked well & allow us to use the onesies for a few more months. i do know that the gerber & circo onesies that my 5 month old wears (she's already in the 12 month size) have tags & not the tagless tag.

btw, i've never heard of that causing a problem before, but it's very interesting...my oldest daughter has very sensitive skin & eczema problems. interesting!
i hope this helps.

My daughter is 13 months and has the same problem with the tagless onesies, shirt, etc. Luckily, I have some old ones from her siblings but she is out growing them. If you find any, would you email me please?. Thank you-good luck

Have you tried the sleep sacks? I know my youngest really loves them. Obviously they're not practal for play time and have to be only for sleep. As for the onesies, I have not seen any with tags in them for a long time actually. my suggestion would be to turn them inside out. It may be a bit akward to button them, but worth it in the end.

We switched to the 2 piece sleepers once my son was about 25 lbs and didn't like to be in the one piece anymore. We use the Carters and he wears a t-shirt under them. I think we bought either Hanes or Fruit Of The Loom white t-shirts for 2T/3T but the 4T fit my son better. The t-shirts are tagless (my son won't wear onesies anymore).

Hi H.
Have you considered putting your daughter in the two piece pj sets. I started puting my son in those around 10 mos because he did not like the footie pj's anyways. THen you can just put socks on her feet and she ready to go.

I would just go to the two piece sleepers. You can put her socks back on her after she falls asleep at night. My house can be freezing and my daughter will still take her socks off. We ask her all the time if her feet are cold and she always says no! Kids are silly! :D Could you iron on sew on a piece of fabric over the silk screened tag? I know almost everything is tagless now. I've heard about the allergic reaction to the "tag," but I haven't personally experienced it. It seems like a piece of cotton fabric (maybe an old tshirt?) over the silk screened area would help. The only other thing I can think if is to advertise on CraigsList or go to a second had store. I would think that stuff would have tags in them.

We had the same proplem. My daughter is 16 months old and 30 pounds. We found the Children's place footed pajamas are great. They are big in the thy, leg and belly area. They are the only brand that she can wear. Now, having said that, all of their other clothes run small, but their PJs are great

I am not sure what to tell you about the sleepers. When it has been really cold outside lately, I have kept my 16 month old in his footed pajamas all day just so he wouldn't take his socks off, but he does still fit in them so he is still in them at night. Sometimes you can find 2 piece pajama sets with feet. I know my daughter had a couple pairs, but they were hand-me-downs so I have no idea if they still make them or where to find them. As far as the onesies, would the tagless kind still bother her if you turned them inside out? Just a thought.

All three of my children have been big babies. My one year old is 27 pounds. i don't know why, but second hand PJ's have been the best! I can go with the bigger size and because they have already shrunk, they fit great! She fits well in Children's Place and Carters. when it came to shirts, I had such a problem keeping them down, so I did use onsies. But, I have found that dresses work great as shirts, then you don't need the onsies. I have found flare dresses and put leggings under them. she will even be able to wear them in the summer without the leggings. I don't know if you have had this problem yet, but I also found that all the pants were too long. I had to buy bigger to fit her belly. Capri pants are awesome! You can buyt he size for her belly, and they end up being regular length. Good luck!

MY son just turned one and is almost 25 lbs but is a little over 30 inches tall and have a hard time with the 1 piece sleepers as well, too short. If we go bigger they are too big. I like the 2 piece ones and mine are from my older son and have tags, or used to have tags:) Try a second hand store to find the onsies with the tags.

I know you are not supposed to, but we use a light blanket in our son's bed. He hates wearing socks, so this helps keep his feet warm in the winter.

what about putting slippers on over her socks?
when we run out of sleepers with feet, i put my daughter in pants and shirt pajamas. i put socks on her (but she also loves to pull them off) so i put on her slippers. we have a pair or robeez booties, and she loves them, and cant pull them off, but they are not too tight.

worth a try.
