What Type of Clothing Should My Toddler Sleep in at Night?

I have an amazing 18 month old daughter who still sleeps in her crib wearing a one piece sleeper. It zips up the front and I've noticed in the morning when she wakes up, that she feels hot. Now that its hot outside, I also put her fan on low. What do your children sleep in at night to stay cool, but not too cold! She doesn't use a blanket yet because I figured she would just kick it off. She sleeps soundly all night long, so maybe this isn't a big deal. I just want her to be cool and not too hot.

Shortie pjs from Target or Kohls. You really need to stick with pajamas because of fire safety issues. They're either really snug or they're polyester and therefore fireproof.

Disney has some very cute and comfy shorts with short sleeve shirt PJs (PJ Pals) and also Old Navy has cute & comfy ones too.

My son is 17 months and sleeps in either the one piece footie pjs or 2 piece. I thought he might be getting too warm, so put him in bed with just a t-shirt. When I checked on him later, his bare behind was in the air as he slept peacefully and his diaper was on the floor! So, I have to make sure his diaper is covered. If your daughter is still small enough, some stores carry onesies in 18-24 month size. I will be using them as an alternative to pjs until my son outgrows them. I hope this helps!

Sounds like she's definitely a bit hot at night - I put mine in a short-sleeved cotton t-shirt and shorts or thin long cotton pajama pants - the 2-piece lets more air in than a sleeper and then i also give her a blanket, which she either kicks off or snuggles into. Hope this helps, good luck!

My son is 17mo. old. If you don't keep your house too cool you can put her in cotton pj pants and short sleave cotton shirt. If you do keep your house cool at night maybe put her in a long sleeve cotton shirt. My son sleeps with a blanket so he pretty much keeps himself on top of the blankets which probably helps keep him warm. Plus we keep our house at 74 at night with the high cost of electricity these days.

My son is 18 months and he has the shorts pj sets. I got his at target. Or he sleeps in a tshirt and sweats. He doesn't kick of his blankie at all. As a matter of fact he has part of it in one hand and his baby in the other all night.

My daughter sleeps in 2 piece pajama sets, usually cotton pants and long sleeve shirt. They are thin enough that she usually does not get too hot. As for the blanket, as others have said she is old enough that as long as she has it near her, she can cover herself up. When our daughter was around your daughter's age, she found a princess pillow/blanket set that she fell in love with at the store. She is almost 3 now and still sleeps with, wants it for a nap, etc. Every night I cover her up because she wants me too, but there are some mornings that I get her out of bed and it's no where close to her. They know what they want, even at such a young age!

I put a t shirt on my 13 month old and she still stays a bit warm (we keep the house at 79 and her fan on low). If the house feels really warm she just sleeps in a diaper. She does have her security blankie, but she doesn't cover up with it- just hugs it. Our house stays fairly warm no matter what the thermometer says, and we can afford to dress lighter so much easier than to run the air more.

We also have our 19 month old in the 2 piece jammies from Target. She sleeps in a shirt and shorts. I have a few extra pairs of the sleep shorts, so I just put those with a onesie and she stays cool. She was getting way to hot in the zip ups, even the thin cotton ones.

My toddlers sleep in 2 piece pj's, short sleeve shirts and shorts or light weight pants, with no socks on and it works perfect because with their feet exposed they stay cool enough and yet don't need a blanket. Just feel her skin while she is sleeping and if she feels cool just lay a light weight blanket over her. If she is cold she will snuggle up to it and if she kicks it off most likely she doesn't need it. good luck!

Last summer, we put my son in a t-shirt onesie to sleep at night. This summer (now he's 20 months), he seems hotter. His diaper keeps him PLENTY warm, so we just put him in a diaper and tank top for his pajamas. He has a blanket in his crib, and if he gets cold, he cuddles it. That hasn't happened lately, though. He's fine with just the tank top and diaper, and we save money on fancy pajamas. On hot nights, we even turn on the fan to cool his room down more.

at 18 months old she is big enough for a small childs blanket and she will kick it off but you would e surprised to know she can get it if she wants it and if she not comfortable she will cry and let you know. My son is 20 months old and you have to remember they get hotter than we do so a night gown and socks should really be fine for the summer. I even let my son sleep in just his shirt or soemtimes just a diaper. The fan turned on can actually cause more issues than her not sleeping with enough clothes on. So my doctors says. :) I went thru this with my first child and then I realized by the time I had my son. That by the time there this age they can tell us in there own way what they need. Its summer time save the zip up sleeper for the winter. Socks and a night gown should be enough! :) You sound like a great mother go with your instincts its why God gave them to us! God Bless you and your family.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter sleeps in two piece jammies. Right now they are all short sleeved and some have shorts and others have long pants. I had to do away with the sleepers because they are too hot and she was unzipping them (I was afraid she would catch her skin in the zipper). My daughter is just starting to use a light blanket and it's becoming a part of her bedtime routine to kiss her goodnight and cover her.

I see you have already received a lot of great responses already, but here is another. I really like the pajamas from Old Navy. They come in various combinations; short sleeves w/ short pants, short sleeves w/ long pants, or long sleeves w/ long pants. They are thin but snug and have lasted well. My youngest is wearing his big brothers hand-me-downs along with a few new ones. My youngest is now three and he still won't sleep under the covers so I am worried he will get a chill from the air conditioning, especially on his legs. So my favorite style are the short sleeves with long pants. Have fun shopping!

I have 2 girls that are now 8 1/2 and 5 1/2 years old. By the time that they were a 1 years old I had them sleeping in satin type pajamas and night gowns. They loved them. The biggest draw back is that now they will not sleep in anything else. They refuse to sleep in anything that is cotton or flannel. I would suggest that you try both. My kids have always slept with a favorite blanket. At first I would go in and cover them up in the middle of the night. After a while, they either stopped kicking the covers off or learned to cover themselves.

My son wears a gown with elastic on the bottom. i've found that it isn't as hot as the one with feet and a zipper/snaps. He is 2 months old. I do cover him up with a light receiving blanket sometimes. I tuck it into the sides of his bassinet so he can't kick it off. I learned this at the hospital.

My little girl slept in one piece sleepers until she was 2 years old. I like the sleepers because I did not have to worry about a blanket. Then she started getting hot and sweating at night. So I started putting her in the 2 piece pajamas, the one with shorts. They have cute and affordable ones at Target and Walmart. I also put a sheet on her mattress and tucked it under on the sides still keeping it somewhat loose on the top. That way she would not be able to kick it off. She loved it and felt like a big girl. It is amazing, even with these changes and the fan on in her room, she sometimes still gets hot at night. I think she is just a hot baby.

The problem with the flame-retardant jammies is the material doesn't breathe & it gets very hot in the summer. You have two choices--snug-fitting cotton jammies or the flame-retardant ones. Check with retailers who sell Carters (or even the Carters store, there's one at Grapevine Mills) as they have the best choices.

My kids (ages 2 & 4) always sleep in cotton t-shirts and shorts. Gap has some really cute pajama short sets but they can sometimes be a little pricey. This time of year you can usually find the long sleeve ones on sale - I'll buy those and cut the legs and arms short to make them cool for summer. They also each sleep with 2 blankets in case they get chilled.
