Clothes That Fit for 2 Year Old

I have an almost two year old and I am having a hard time finding bottoms ( pants, skirts, etc) that fit. She is very skinny and tall. All the 24 month and 2T sizes are fine in length but they just fall down since she is so skinny. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

Lots of stores have pants/shorts/skirts with adjustable waists now.

Target
Walmart
Shopko
The Children's Place
Gymborie
K-Mart
Sears
JcPenny

Just start looking inside all the clothes...you will see an elastic band on both sides looped onto buttons...you just pull to desired width and button...easy!

Who ever invented these are a genius! Probably a mommy!

I have the same problem with a 7 year old. She wears 7/8 in tops, but 7 pants fall off. Old Navy has clothing that has an adjustable waist, NOT elastic, but a drawstring underneath the waistband. Might try that.

I have found that the brands that run "skinny" are Children's Place (my fave), Carters, and Jumping Bean from Kohls. Circo from Target seems to run "chunky". Gymboree seems to run large in general but pretty well proportioned. I can't remember about walmart. My son usually thinner, but he has growth spurts where he gets chunky, then taller, then chunky, then taller, so I switch around. The elastic inside is great, and since she is a girl, you are lucky to be able to use leggings. With spring coming, you won't have quite such a hard time since shorts and skirt don't have to be certain lengths like pants. And if a skirt is too short, you can put leggings or legging shorts under it.

I had the same issue with my first son. The clothes he got were very nice seconds from my best friend. When she gave me the clothes she showed me that in some of them she had to take in the waist and sew them so they would fit. I ended up doing that with some of his clothes, too. So, you may want to do that if money is an issue and you can't buy new clothes (like it was for me).

My girls are like that - at 4 they could wear some 5 pants for lenght, but they fall down in the waiste. Target and Children's Place make pants that have an adjustable waisteline in them. They work wonders, and i think actually make the pants last longer, becuase they can grow with your child.

My daughter was the same way at that age. We depended on Gymboree leggings, as they fit a slim body great. They wear very well and mix and match with other pieces that they offer.

I have the smal problem with my 4 year old. He is a tall and skinny boy. I have found that pants that fit him with length and contain an adjustable waist band are the way to go. Good luck!

I'd agree with all the advice on the leggings. They've been a Godsend for us. Kohl's, Meijer, Target are all good places to find them (sometimes you can find them at Walmart in the Garanimals sectoin).

Our daughter is currently wearing last summer's dresses with a long-sleeve shirt and leggings as her standard outfit. She'll be two this weekend, and it's worked great.

Good luck.

I've the same problem. Sometimes you can find pants with elastic in the waistband that you can adjust using the buttons. I just sew the waistband in an inch at the side. It keeps the bottoms up and my girls don't mind. I'll probably have to do this for the rest of their lives!

My daughter has twin girls and they are on the slim side - She buys the Gap's
jeans and shorts with the adjustable waist- they use buttonhole elastic. My daughter loves these jeans and shorts - If you sew use the buttonhole elastic.

My daughter has the same issue. When we can find them, we use the pants with the elastic and the button (I usually buy mine at children's' place). I have sewn a small portion of the sides of her pants together, like what whould fit in a safely pin but sewing it instead (I hope that makes sense). I will also buy her "slim" sizes when I can find them.

My daughter is 18 mos and tall too. She is mostly wearing 12 month pants, it's working out good since it's spring and they look like capris. =) She is about out of her 18 mo sleepers too. Basically if its 2 pieces then she is wearing a smaller size and if its a dress/pjs then she's wearing 18-24 months. You can compare pants and find ones that have smaller waists and longer legs. I've had to do that too.

I have had the same issue. If you have not discovered them by now you just need to look for pants that have the adjustable waist band built in. You can find them in most brands these days. I have yet to discover any one particular brand/line that is a sure thing for him so we buy what we like and look for this feature in pants. Look a little closer at Target, JcPennys, Kohls...these are just a start! Good luck!

You've got plenty of responses, but looking through them, I didn't see anyone address the T for toddler attached to some clothes sizes. These clothes are for the larger than normal babies and toddlers. Any item with a T after the size is going to be big around to fit a young child in a large size. In other words, if you have a very big baby, she might need a 2T when she's only 1 yr. Also, sizes in months(6-9,9-12,etc.)have extra room for diapers. If you don't have a sewing machine, they aren't too expensive and come in really handy for quick alterations. I can't tell you how many times I've used mine to do a quickie job on someone's something that needed taking in or letting out. Just a thought.

I have the same issue with my daughter - I always loved summer because I could put her in pants that were short & every one thought they were kapris and shorts just don't matter if you use the smaller size if you get a little longer short.

She is now 5 and has to wear size 6 cloths - the shirts fit nicely, but the pants still don't fit her waist... luckly her school does uniforms... the uniform pants have an elastic pull w/ buttons to attach it to. So, you are able to adjust the wait band to fit the kids more correctly. I don't know if you would be willing to put your 2 yr old in uniform pants or if you could find it in that option in any other cloths, but it has helped w/ her now.

Also when she was younger we would use a baby pin in the back so reduce the size of the waist.

Good luck!

I have the same problem with my son. I just have to only buy him pants with the adjustable waist bands in them. They are becoming more and more popular. Just look inside the waistband for a button on each side that is connected to elastic.

Buy leggings at Target, usually run true to size/age and wear with dresses or skirts or alone. When buying adjustable waist pants make sure the waist isn't wider than the hips of the pants, some of those are huge and slide right off no matter how much you tighten. Also, dresses with little tiny bike shorts. Elastic waist pants also work well.

My son has no but and he's tall. I used cloth diapers which bulked him up and I only bought bottoms that had elastic in the waste. For all the hand-me-downs that did have elastic, I made a couple ribbon belts and just cinched them on.

My son has the same problem and is the same age. Too bad the boys can't wear leggings as others suggested. I have found that the adjustable waist pants are great. In addition to another poster, I've seen them (in the boys section at least) at Kohls and Old Navy. I'll put my boy in overalls and elastic waist as well. I'm just glad summer is approaching so he can start wearing shorts!

Ha, I have the exact opposite problem! My almost 2 year old boy is so stocky and cute, and I have the hardest time finding pants that fit him! 24 month and 2T sizes fit around his waist, but they are all way too long!

I agree with the other posters, try the garments that have an adjustable waist. Also, I would even look at 18-24 month sizes to compare lengths. Maybe bring a skirt or something that fits her well to the store that you will be shopping at, then compare it to the skirts in the store to see if you can find one that is about the same length. That way you have a better idea of how it might acutally fit your daughter (and you won't have to worry about returning anything if it doesn't fit!). I am amazed at how many pairs of 2T pants I have at home and how DIFFERENT they all are in length!

Just an idea! Good luck.

The pants Sandy mentioned in her post can be found just about in any brand/store of toddler clothing. The brands I've bought my daughter with that elastic band are Osh Kosh, Children's Place, Levis, Faded Glory, Target (can't think of their brand name right now). And I must say they're a fantastic idea because my daughter's weight fluctuates when she gets sick.

Our son is very skinny too and we like Old Navy clothes. Plus they have great sales of 30 - 40% off if you watch for them. Somehow they make clothes that aren't too baggy when they first move up into the new size. We tried to get him a Christmas outfit from Target and bought the next size down because it looked so big. The shirt wouldn't button because it was so small but the pants literally fell down around his ankles!

I got my daughter some pants from a consignment sale that have an elastic band inside the waist. It goes from one side, around the back to the other side. It's kinda like a belt, you can adjust it by looping holes over buttons. I'm not sure of the brands of the pants though. Perhaps some other moms know what stores to find these at?? They have been great for my daughter!

I ended up having to put a dart in almost all of my daughters clothes until just recently. Our main problem is that she was wearing 3T clothes at 2 and is wearing 4T and bigger now. She will be 3 in May. We also had luck with adjustable waistbands. She's gained some weight and most of her clothes are fitting around the waist now.
