You can buy thicker underwear for toddlers that absorb some of the wetness but they still get wet. you only get 2 or 3 in a pack but you can get them at like target or walmart. Plus they are comfy, stretchy and most like underwear.
I am planning to switch to cloth diapers as my 20 month old dd is potty learning. Thing is, there are so many out there it is absolutely daunting!! I am not the "crunchiest" of Mothers so I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to cloth.
There are two things I would like out of cloth diapers:
a) CHEAP! Does this exist? Or a place to get them inexpensively?
b)I actually want them NOT to be super-absorbent. The reason I want to switch is because my dd needs to "feel" what it is like to be wet....disposables these days are too darn good, thus kids miss what it feels like to eliminate.
Any good suggestions? :)
p.s My dd is aboout 26 lbs, and on the slender side.

Hi S.! I use cloth & love it!
My suggestion to you, based on your needs, is possibly to look into purchasing second hand. The reason for that is because you are potty learning & won't need them for very long & this will also be one of the least expensive options. Diaperswappers.com is an awesome site for gaining valuable information as well as to buying & selling used.
(sometimes new) You can also look at cloth diaper sites under the clearance sections if you are against using "used".
Personally I would recommend a pocket diaper this way you can use an insert to your liking. We use mostly Bum genius & blueberry diapers, which are pricy but we LOVE them!
Feel free to contact me if you'd like a list of my favorite sites or any other information!
Best of luck!

It sounds to me like what you want are cloth training pants, not cloth diapers. CDs are pretty expensive, unless you want to get prefolds (which are the old school flat diapers like our moms used) and snappis or pins and rubber pants/ velcro covers (like Bummi Whisper Wraps). If you think she's within a month of training, I'd go with the pants, which you can get from One Step Ahead (I haven't use them). The other thing you could do is buy a pack of cheap washcloths (soft ones) and use them to line the inside of her diaper so she gets the "feel" of being wet without investing in a whole new thing.
If you think she'snot that near to training and you do want cloth diapers, I would suggest maybe trying a couple on her. My son is 28 pounds, but he is growing out of his Bum Genius, which we LOVED! He's moving into Fuzi Bunz large. We're near the Waterfront, so if you want to get together and try them on, I'd be happy to do that.
just use training pants...they are great! But the best is "nothing" - if you have a yard and it's warm outside, put only a dress (or long shirt for a boy) on them an have a small potty close by, so that they don't have to hold it long......trust me,they lear fast like this
S.,
you are one of the smarter new moms of today ! good going ... this is why [ I am a grammy] our kids were potty trained all by 2 years[ alot of us worked too] .. c-l-o-t-h . kids feel wet ...
my generation used ' curid ' not sure if they still make them . you were able [30 years ago] to buy pre folded , and /or long thin [ to fold as you wish ] about the size of 2 dish cloths long .
also; diaper service was around too ....
great for you earth lovers !!!!!!!!
you NEED plastic[ rubber] pants too and diaper pins ...you can fold a diaper to use 1 pin in front , 2 pins at the hip of child ...it was an art ....chuckle
I am sure they are in every color , every ruffle, every store ... I just did not notice ...henceforth, their job is to hold pee and poo ... go for the best ' buy' for your buck $$$$$$ white should be cheaper and bleachable .100% cotton always .
good for you .
diapers stay in landfills [ forever]
a grammy who uses 35 year old

I can't give you any specific recommendations other than my cloth diaper supplier and guru, Inge who has a fabulous website (www.diaperware.com). Inge knows the pros and cons of about every kind of cloth diaper out there, and I know she knows a lot about diapering toddlers. I have seen cloth training pants on the site, and I haven't gotten around to getting any for my 22-month-old yet, but I've been thinking about it. So ask her, she has excellent customer service and she'll answer any question you can think of.
I use cloth diapers as well. My oldest son is 20 months & I just switched him to Bum Genius diapers b/c he is big (29lbs) and grew out of his medium sized prefolds. I could have purchased toddler size prefolds, but I wanted something easier to take on and off. A prefold diaper needs to be folded, pinned (or snappied) and then a cover needs to be put on over that. My son hates diaper changes, so this was becoming difficult. The Bum Genius is a pocket diaper which I stuff in advance. Then it just goes on like a disposable. The BG is also adjustable, so when my oldest finally potty trains I can use them with my youngest, no matter what his size is. (I bought the BG 3.0 one size diapers).
I know many diaper companies also now make "pull-up" diapers. I have not yet researched them b/c my son is no where near potty training ready yet, but they are something you might want to research. I believe I saw some on www.clothdiaperoutlet.com. Also, if you need more info about what to get you should check out www.diaperpin.com. It is a site where Mom's review various diapers. You should be able to get great info there. Good luck. And congrats on your daughter potty training already.
Prefolds with pul covers!!!
I switched to cloth when my daughter was 20 mos old & we used prefolds. They're by FAR the least expensive and can generally be used for at least 2-3 kids from birth to potty training before they become too thin to use as diapers anymore. At that point, they make fantastic rags! They average $2 each, for good quality ones. Covers will cost around $10 each or so.
I suggest that if you want to only do wash once or twice a week, that you get 2-3 dozen prefolds & 3-4 covers.
I, personally, like www.EverythingBirth.com quite a lot for diapers. They sell VERY good quality prefolds, which are unbleached, so they're easy on baby's skin & the environment, PLUS they're really, really soft!!! I also suggest getting some BioSoft liners, which sit ontop of the prefold, (which goes inside of the cover) & acts sort of like cheese cloth.--The liquid will pass through it, but any solids will stay on top. That way when she poops, you simply lift out the Biosoft liner & flush it away! VERY easy!
I like to use Allens Naturally detergent, but I also use O-Nature-L a lot & I've heard that Charlies Soap & a LITTLE BIT of Gain is fine to use. (you could google "cloth diaper safe detergent" & come up w/ a list of good & bad ones to use).
I wash my dipes about 1x/wk & do a cold/cold cycle first w/ detergent (you do not need much at all!!!!!!!!!) to loosen stains, followed by a hot/cold wash w/ NO detergent, but some white viniger (a natural yeast-killer & fabric softener). Then I dry my diapers & wipes (pieces of flannel or fleece work well, along w/ washcloths) & I hang up my covers (drying them in the dryer can make them less waterproof!).
Covers only need to be washed when they get poop on them or REALLY saturated w/ urine. They can just be rinsed off in the sink if you prefer & hung to dry. They usually dry in 45 min or so.
You can also check Craigs List or Ebay for used diapers.
Hope that helps some, S.! LMK if you have any questions! I've been CD'ing my son since birth (he's 21 mos now) & have tried many different brands & styles of diapers.
Good luck!

Skip the diapers - go straight to "big girl panties". cheaper and gives the same effect. They have training panties out there too - but not always as pretty as the others. You are right - the "wet" felling is the best way - it's how I did my kids. Daipers are for "babies" which is why I chose the panties, plus you can say - you've got on big girl panties. Don't let anyone tell you they are too young. Both of my girls were trained fully before the age of 18 months. Panties and M & M's worked wonders!
Hi! I actually make my sons diapers :) I charge $ 10 a diaper and would be happy to make some for you, I would just need some measurements. I make "pocket diapers" that are "stuffed" with soaker-pads, so it would be easy to adjust the absorbancy. Let me know what you think...
:) M.
The potty patty/scotty are great. They have too levels of absorption. I got super duper as I do not want pee on my carpet. It was still wet enough for him to feel. They are not cheap, but way cheaper than pull ups and diapers over time. I would get 6 minimum.
you CAN find cheap ones- homemade too! on Etsy.com
there are some excellent, well-proven designs from homemakers.
I was inspired by the patterns and have made my own for my lil 6 month baby-in-the-womb :)
thanks for deciding to do cloth! less pretrolum products (plastic) the better we all are!!!!!!!!
We used Bummmi's pull ups for overnight (they are more for day-time, but he was done with that and just needed them for the occasional accident at night for the same reason-pull-ups were too absorbant). We used cloth throught his *long* life though and liked Happy Heiny's also. Just regular training pants were good for potty training in the day since it helps you know when they are wet. It is really about training the parent to be vigilant in reminders, in that way, it is good to just use training pants.
Do you want Cloth diapers or cloth training pants?
I've been usuing cloth diapers(cd) for my 23 month old from the start. My favorite cd is bumgenius. It is pocket diaper and I usually buy them online
on the other hand if you are interested in cloth traning pants/pullsups:
we use the gerber training pants( available at walmart, target, kmart etc and not expensive)at home.these are not very absorbant, probably hold about 1/2 a pee, but I think my son is almost trained because of these. And these are not waterproof...
so when we are out and about we use imsevimse training pants(around $14) or blueberry training pants ( more expensive$22, but more absorbant).therse two are waterproof and can hold about 1-2 pees.these dont have stay dry material so my ds feels wet when pees.i bought these at online shops.
If you are potty training, I'd go with training pants. They are underpants, but thicker and padded like cloth diapers. If your child wets through them, you can also get the plastic pants that go over the training pants to keep your floors dry :)
They sell them at target, kmart, etc, with the toddler panties.
