Cleaning the Shower Door

So this is kind of a dumb question, but here goes. I have a shower stall in my bathroom that has a glass shower door. I'm not the greatest housekeeper ever, so by the time I get to cleaning it it's got some soap scum on it (I mean, it's not totally disgusting, but it needs to be scrubbed with a sponge.). What I can't find a good system for is cleaning off the cleaning product. If I just wash it off, the floor gets soaked unless I get in the shower and shut the door, but then I have to get naked to clean the shower! That feels silly. I normally just do a million passes with a wet-but-not-soapy sponge, but I was wondering if anyone has a better system. Thanks for the help.

Hi J.! Do you have a rubber squeegee? They are amazing. I just get all the water off the shower doors and walls after every time I shower and it takes a few seconds. Works like a charm. I do clean the shower regularly (I love the bathroom cleaner from BioKleen) but doing the squeegee thing takes all the hard work out of it!

Good luck! Soap scum is a persistent foe! :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. They are awesome although if you have kids you have to keep them out of reach. I did both of my shower doors in about 15 min with a wet eraser. After I discovered this product for my doors I won't go back to anything else. They are so worth the $2 they cost.

I use vinegar & a scrub pad. Vinegar is a cheap, green product that works great for everything.

I am the world's worst housekeeper and just solved the same issue! I used the Magic Eraser to clean the soap scum. Then I bought a little squeegee that I keep in the shower (I got it from Bed Bath and Beyond) and squeegee the shower (including the door) before I get out of the shower. It takes seconds and keeps the scum and mildew at bay!

Get it clean once, and then make it part of your shower routine, when you're in there and everything is wet anyway, give it a swipe with your washcloth.

My grandmother swears by CLR, but I can't seem to get the results she does. I like Spic n span BUT you need to be sure your shower door hasnt already been treated by the manufacturer (like my new one has). I agree, sqeegy is the best in-between cleaning maintanence...its getting everyone else to abide that's the real problem! Good luck!

I always clean the shower door when I take a shower because then I'm already wet and naked :)

I just use vinegar and water and a sponge. I keep the sponge and the spray bottle in the shower. Once a week I spray down the shower door (and the rest of the shower) and wipe it with the sponge. Then I proceed with my shower. The door gets thoroughly rinsed as I shower!

I've also found that the spray and leave on shower fresh cleaners work well too. Spray them on your glass shower door before you exit the shower and you'll never have to clean it! I just stopped using them because I wanted to go all natural with my cleaners.

I can make your day with this! I just purchased the Black and Decker Scumbuster Extreme. Had to order it online from Wal-Mart for 37.99 and $.99 and it is one of the best things I have ever owned. I know that sounds ridiculous but my dilemma was cleaning white grout between white ceramic tile. It does fantastic. Using Kboom bathroom cleaner and this tool with the scrubbing pads cleans the soap scum off the shower doors like crazy. I have been religious with the sprays too but you still get buildup on them. I looked over town for it and no one had it in stock. Home Depot online had it for 60.00 - Lowes had it as well but Wal-Mart had the best price and I received it 3 days from the day I placed the order. Hope this helps and let me know if you get one.Take care.

I have a glass door also and since I got a squeegee it always looks clean! I just squeegee after every shower, I also squeegee the floor and it cuts down on how often I need to scrub the grout too!

Hi J., I am sure that I have the answer for you, but it is a matter of exactly which product will work best. I would try Shaklee's Basic H2 in the degreaser ratio first. Basic H2 is used to clean windows & mirrors in one ratio (2 drops Basic H2 in 16 oz. of water in a spray bottle), general purpose cleaner for walls, woodwork, countertops including granite, appliances, etc. (1/4 teaspoon in 16 oz. of water in a spray bottle), and as a degreaser (1&1/2 teaspoons in 16 oz. of water in a spray bottle). This is an awesome product, and it is GREEN! It is non-toxic so is safe for you to use and safe for your family as it has no toxic chemicals to poison your family or our environment. Also, it is cheaper to use than whatever you currently use, as it is heavily concentrated -- that's why you use so little to mix with water. One bottle of Basic H2 will last the average household about 10 months anyway and will allow you to throw out your toxic cleaners such as: Comet, Windex, Fantastic, etc. Where do you live? I am in Georgetown. If you are nearby, I will be happy to give you a sample to try on your shower door. You will just spray it on and wipe it off with either Shaklee's microfiber cleaning cloth (which can be washed & dried at least 400 times before buying a new one) or a paper towel. If you are not near me to get a sample in person, I could mail you a sample if you wish. Please let me know if I can help you. You may read more about these excellent Shaklee non-toxic cleaning products at my website www.emilytaft.com - just put "cleaning products" or "Basic H2" in the search box. You can reach me at ____@____.com or ###-###-####, and I will be happy to chat with you. Hope this is helpful. E. Taft

The best product to use is CLR...put in a spray bottle and use a sponge w/ a scratchy side. Spray on then wipe down w/ scratchy side then rinse, yes the floor may get a little wet but that's what towels are for right? I have the same kind of door on my shower. Heck you can even do it while showering if you want to save time, it just takes a minute...just make sure you steer clear of getting it directly on your skin as it tends to be a little harsh. So if you do it while showering just don't get the sponge saturated and steer clear of the drain (it's only your hands and feet that'd come in contact with it if you do it this way). CLR though...it's the only thing that's really worked for me on the soap scummy glass shower door.

I purchased a rather inexpensive hand-held shower head; after every shower I use the shower head to spray down the walls & doors (keeps down on the buildup) Turns out I do a thorough cleaning w/ a mix of vinegar & water every 3 to 4 weeks...I spray it on and then use a little scrub brush on the grout in the tough areas; after it sits for a few minutes I just use the hand help shower head to spray everything down and I'm done!

Maybe once a week or so, spray the shower with vinegar a few minutes before you're going to take one, and then you can rinse it when you get in?

When we had shower doors, we kept a towel nearby just for drying the doors after every shower. Kept the doors free of soap scum. But I love the squeegee idea! Same principle, much better in practice!
