Last week, when I went to buy detergent for my dishwasher, I saw an adjacent bottle of dishwasher cleaner. "Who would need to buy that?" I thought. Apparently, you answered that question. I'd see what they have in the detergent aisle.
Hey moms,
I am moving Saturday (renting) and the dishwasher seem kind of gross. I'm a little scared to use it in the state it's in. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for how to clean the inside of a dishwasher, or a cleaner to run through to make sure it's safe/sanitary.
Thanks in advance!

There is a product called Dishwasher Magic that is sold at walmart, kmart, and ace. Look it up online by typing in dishwasher cleaner or diswasher magic. You put it in the dishwasher silverware basket and run the dishwasher on empty to clean it out. Hope it works for you.
I run vinegar through mine to wash it occasionally. The regular white distilled vinegar. It is a natural disinfectant and safe to use. I just fill up the cups where you normally put the detergent and the rinse aid with vinegar. Hope it helps!
go to the local Ace hdwr and ask for Muraic (spelling???) Acid. It comes in a gallon size, though. You add it to the dishwasher with an empty load and it should get rid of all the gunky stuff and clean it up. After that you should get an idea of how bad it is and if it can be salvaged (for regular use).
Good luck.
Um, your new landlord has full responsibility to provide a clean unit for you. This includes clean appliances as well. Was the unit professionally cleaned for you?
Not that you want to move into a place on the wrong foot or already complaining, but if the dishwasher is gross, maybe you could show the landlord and request that it be cleaned.
My Mother volunteered at and senior service center, where they servered lunch to the seniors and they would run TANG powdered drink mix through the dish washer there to clean it. AShe said it work great. A.
vinegar in both parts and let it g through a cycle
Lysol liquid. Wash the tub out well with the lysol then fill the tub with water and lysol (maybe 1/2 the bottle) and let the machine run its' cycles to completion. Leave the lid open when not in use so the germs are not breeding in the dark damp place.

I'd only use bleach as a last resort. Bleach produces Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are very bad news.
Don't put chemicals such as CLR into your machine. Not only does this void your warranty AND any service contracts, but this chemical errodes some of the components in your appliance. But Vinegar or baking soda are gentle enough.
Put some white vinegar in the area you put special rinse. Like a capful or two along with regular dishwasher soap. Run the diswasher.
Hi A.,
I find scrubing it down with baking soda helps and it's totally natural. Afterwards, try the vinegar route and run the machine with no dishes and some soap..good luck!
Put white distilled vinegar instead of dishwasher soap in the soap compartment & run it. If it still smells, then I would do it a couple more times.
Hello, I have bought a cleaner from wal mart it is right next to the dish soap.I have used the 3 brands that my local store has and they really are all the same.I have also used lemon juice and vinger and baking soda, I used the baking soda in the small section and the vinger in the large section wash on hot agter it is done I fill up both sides with lemon juice and do a quick wash
I'm pretty sure it's called Dishwasher Magic. I found it at Home Depot near the appliances, but I think it's readily available other places too. Worked great. Good luck with the move.
