Cleaning a Toilet??

Sorry, this may be a stupid question but how do you clean your toilet? We've been in our house for less than a year and I've noticed that all our toilets develop this black ring at the water level that looks just like mildew very quickly after I've cleaned it. This never happened at our other house, so I'm not sure what is going on. I've always used those Scrubbing Bubbles disposable cleaners because I absolutely HATE having one of those disgusting brushes for my toilet. However, since my toilet is constantly turning black and now that I am in a bigger house with 4 toilets to clean I am going through those brushes like crazy. I don't like spending all that money and I'm sure they are not environmentally friendly. Anyway, can anyone give me any tips on the best way to clean a toilet. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips! I did go out and buy some of the tablets that go into the tanks so hopefully that will help. I do also think that it has something to do with our community water, because I've noticed some differences from our other community. I did buy the scrubbing bubbles brushes again though, because I still can't bring myself to buy those brushes that sit in the container behind my toilet. GROSS! Also, my son gets into everything and I can see him trying to play with that brush. Thanks again!!

I use the bleach drop in tablets to help clean and freshen up in-between cleanings, and scrub every other day with the toilet bowl cleaner (I use Clorox or Lysol only) and brush.

If anyone ever invents a self cleaning toilet I will be first in line to buy them.
I can understand how my grandparents thought toilets/bathrooms were filthy because they were use to out houses and relieving yourself inside your house seemed such a dirty thing to do.
No matter what brush I use, every so often I have to put the long rubber gloves on and get in there and scrub it out with a scrubby pad.
I use 2000 Flushes and it really keeps the mildew/mold under control between cleanings.

I know this is going to sound crazy but the best toilet bowl cleaner I have found is mouthwash. Listerine is the best but the dollar store mouthwash works well too. I was in my husbands bathroom one day and his toilet was moldy and just plain disgusting so I grabbed his mouthwash and scrub it with the even grossier brush and then I just let it soak for about 15 minutes. Cleanest toilet I have ever seen!

my family laughs at me, because when I clean toilets I always pull my shirt up over my nose! I don't want any splashes hitting me!

For me, it's not the black water ring....it's the stupid orange hardwater stains. What a pain! Anyway, drop-in bleach tablets should help you....& be sure to flush all 4 of those toilets regularly. Our guest bath rarely gets used....& has a tendency to stain quicker.

I either use a toilet bowl cleaner with bleach and scrub or straight bleach and scrub.

Never had issues with black ring....

I have had this problem too! We found out that it was because our water didn't have enough chemicals in it. There was nothing we could do, but our town had to do. I would recommend having your water checked to make sure it is safe.

Toilet bowl cleaners and bleach plus pine sol has done wonders! Never had black rings! You know bleach kills all germs and works good as you scrub! I have 4 bathrooms, its a job!

Well, get the cute scrubbing brushes with the colorful thingies they hold them in. As far as avoiding ring around the toilet, (and I lived with sons so I know how messy this can all get), I used to spend all sorts of money on toilet bowl cleaners and my husband still buys the blue things. But I just stock up on cheap shampoos/ or Fabuloso or anything cheap since we have to do this all the time and then well, I use the brush. Ick, but more icky if we let it go. I spent years waiting for someone else to do it and I think men have different eyesight then we do, so I didn't get anyone else to satisfy the need for clean toilets. I can attest to it now that in my life anyway, there are not as many men who care about how clean the toilet is. (Well, unless they are former or present military) and even then they don't necessarily want to clean it.

I have that problem though I have no idea why it grows so quickly. Bleach tablets take care of it.

Just wondering out loud but I wonder if it has anything to do with use. It grows on the days when I don't have my kids so no one is home all day. All it is is mold.

B, they do have self cleaning toilets but they cost around $2,000. If you want the link I will ask Troy to dig it up.

I am not sure how often you are cleaning it but does too much time lapse in-between? Does it happen on all te toilets or just the ones that are not used as often?

I believe Kaboom makes something that attaches in the tank and is supposed to clean it with every flush. There is a cartridge that needs replaced every so often. It can be bought at Walmart but it has been a while so I am not sure what they cost or what the exact name is. It comes in a square purple box.

I would tell you to put some bleach in the water and let it sit there for at least a half an hour. You can also buy the clorox toilet bowl cleaners. I think those would be better for the issue you are having.

I have this problem in my home as well, seems to be worse in spring and summer. The only thing that helps is to put bleach tablets in the back of the tank. It doesn't stop the ring from ever forming but it slows it down so I am not cleaning my toilet daily, it's more like every 4 days. Hope this is helpful and I am very interested to see what others are doing for this problem.

I've had that at certain houses I've lived at as well. What I've found is going in and cleaning the tank itself. No one ever thinks to clean that and if you look in there you'll see that it can get pretty gross.

Other than that, you can try some tank tabs that go directly inside the tank with bleach to keep the bowl less icky. I have used everything possible including bleach and vinegar. It's going to depend on the type of water you have and how new your pipes are, how clean your tank is and so on. You'll have to come up with a regular cleaning schedule even if it's more often than you're used to or more often than it should normally be just to keep the icky away. In one house I would scrub the toilet and by the very next day it would start a ring again. That was on a toilet upstairs that wasn't used nearly as often as the communal toilets downstairs. I never understood why. It made us look like pigs, lol. That was one where I had to clean out the tank thoroughly and it did help but there was something about the pipes so I used that tabs in there that helped repel stains and that helped some too.

I agree with the Clorox tablets..... Regarding the ring, if it's mineral build up, try using a pumas stone. They work wonders!
