Hiya Mom's,
My son will be 1 year in Feb. He will be getting 2 vaccinations one of them is for chicken pox (I already had them when I was a child as did my hubby). I do not want alternative solutions or a lecture on how immunizations are not necessary because in my opinion most of them are. My question is this: Can I wait for him to be vaccinated for the chicken pox? I am a SAHM and will be joining a Moms group so he will be around other children. Should I wait? What is the benefit/downfall? I want Mom's opions and not just the Ped's opionion although he is a great doctor. I however am not a Doctor even if I 'feel' I know what is best I still did not go to medical school and do not want to risk my childs health one way or any other!
Thanks Mom's!
Christina

So What Happened?

Well after talking with my hubby and reading the papers the Peds office had given me (which I forgot I had) we decided not to wait. The chances are less than 1 out of 100 he can have a mild reaction, 1 out of 1000 for a moderate reaction... I have also spoken with friends and they all gave me the same advice to go and do it. Why put my child through itching and fever and sickness if it can probably be prevented? He has never had any reaction to any shots thus far so we believe that he should get the immunization. Thanks to all of you great Mommies!

I had my son at my nephew's birthday party when he was about 1 year old (maybe 1 1/2)and another child there had been exposed to chickenpox and was not vaccinated yet. We got the call of course after the party. I was VERY glad that I opted to have my son vaccinated already at that point. I had been a stay at home Mom but your children are still out in the public (at grocery stores, family gatherings, etc.)

My daughter is 4 years old and she has yet to get the vaccine for chicken poxs. My 6 year old had her when she was around 1 year and she had a reaction to it. That is why I decided to wait on my 4 year olds shot. She will not get her shot until she enters school and that is because it is required, not because I think that it is a good idea. I think that it would be safer for her to get the chicken pox than to have the vaccine. I know not everyone would agree with me, but they were not there when my first daughter had her reaction. I honestly, do not see the harm in waiting to give this shot.

I'm with you, as scary as it is thinking your child might get sick from an immunization, they are necessary, so no lectures here.

My children have all had the chicken pox vacc. (11, 9, and 4 years old). HOWEVER, I believe they want to give the first chk. pox at 18 months? and I told my doctor that I did not want my son to have it until he was at least 2 years of age. If your doctor knows how you feel, I'm sure he/she will not mind waiting. I don't know what literature I read was, but I did read something that made me not want to have them get the vacc. until they were at least 2 years old.

Hope this helps....stick with your gut feelings....mother's know best :o)

I am in favor of immunizations and have immunized my children according to the recommended schedule. I guess that probably clues you in to my opinion. LOL However, I haven't had any scary incidents that other moms experienced. Assuming that the schedule is a guideline I would think that you could postpone the vaccine. If you want to wait for any reason I would seek out some reliable information from a health care provider or a website you trust and speak to your pediatrician about your findings. You ask, "Should I wait?" That is something that is difficult for anyone else to decide for you. Do you think getting the chicken pox would be worse than any side effects from the vaccine? Do you think we over medicate our children? Do you think the vaccine is too new to know if it is safe? How would you feel if your child wasn't vaccinated and did come down with chickenpox? What is the reason you want to wait? How long do you want to wait. Answering those questions may help you decide. Good luck!
