My 2 1/2 year old recently chipped part of his tooth. The tooth is one that is the front of his mouth. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, so I don't know if I should do anything about it. Has anyone had a similiar problem?

What can I do next?

You should take him to the dentist and let the dentist decide wheather the tooth is actually damaged or not. The tooth may not be bothering him because he killed the root of the tooth. This happened to me when I had permanent teeth. And my son with his baby teeth The denist decided it was best to pull the damaged tooth. Hope this Helps. G.

My son has the same problem (but at 6), it happened right before a regular dental check-up and the dentist didn't seem to concerned about it. Maybe not much help, but hopefully eases your mind

go to the dentist...might have done something to the nerve. It happened to my daughter..she ended up getting a fake tooth.

Actually, I had this problem with my youngest. She chipped her tooth and the dentist said as long as it didn't begin to turn grey, it was ok. If that happens, then the root is damaged and a dentist should look at it. If he loses the tooth too soon, it could cause problems with the permanant tooth coming in behind it. If it still looks normal, then there's nothing to worry about...he'll lose it when it's ready!

My son chipped his front tooth at around 14 months. I didn't do anything it wasn't a big chip and it didn't hurt him. He is now 5yrs. old and at his kindergarten dental check up she wasn't concerned as it is a baby tooth. He lost his first tooth not the chipped one though but I'm sure that will soon follow. So my suggestion is... if it's not a big chip and doesn't bother him I wouldn't be concerned, just keep an eye on it for discoloration. I chipped my adult tooth when I was young they put a cap on it and now it is starting to discolor because the middle nerve is dead. They haven't done anything yet because it doesn't really bother me, the discoloration isn't noticeable to anyone but the dentist yet. So for now I'm leaving it be.

Hi Michelle,

My 3-year-old knocked out one of his teeth. I called the dentist and they don't do anything, saying that trying to put it back can do more harm to the permanent tooth. I'm not sure about chipped teeth, though. It's worth a call to your pediatrician or dentist to ask, but I don't think there's much that can be done.

Good luck!

Your dentist should evaluate the chippped part. If the dentin is exposed, a small filling may be in order to prevent a large cavity from starting, and just to check the root and possible nerve damage. It's most likely nothing, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

My dentist had me bring my son in. She filed it down, did not charge a thing, but said it was important to bring him in. Something about checking the root to save on future problems and pain. . . can't quite remember the details. If you have a dentist you like you might want to bring him in just to double check.

Hi Michelle~
My son was also 2 1/2 when he fell down, smashed his face on the floor, and chipped his tooth. He is going to be 5 in April. I just left his tooth be. It didn't seem to bother him at all, and it still doesn't. The ped. dentist also recommended I just let it be. Mainly because he said that at that age, removing the tooth could cause the new one to never grow in because it is so early to lose a tooth.
My suggestion would be to just leave it be. If he seems to be in pain, or if it seems to be bothering him then go ahead and call. From personal experience though, I strongly recommend a pediatric dentist as opposed to a general family dentist.
But, like I said, I'd just leave it be unless you get a sense of discomfort from you son.

My 19 month old chipped his front tooth last month. It was a small chip and didn't seem to bother him. I spoke to a pediatric dentist and her take on it was that as long as there was no discoloration on the tooth or gums, no blood, and the tooth wasn't loose, you can let it be. Especially if it's a small chunk only. I was relieved :)

Btw, is it just me, or is this a "boy" problem??

That's so funny....my 2 1/2 year old son recently chipped his tooth also. I didn't even realize he did it at first. It is not bothering him at all either. So I figure since it is a baby tooth and not bothering him, there really isn't much to do about it. I could be wrong though...

My 2 year old just chipped both front teeth so I took him to a pediatric dentist. they took an x-ray to make sure they're wasn't any underlying damage to the root and smoothed the tooth out a bit so that it doesn't cut his mouth. I really wanted to put a cap on the tooth but they said that they would recommend not doing a cap until he can lay still and cooperate...and that the only place that will put a two year old to sleep to do a procedure like that would be a children's hospital.
