Child Peeing Pants a Little Before Getting on Toilet

My child has been going on the toilet for about 6 months. He just turned 3 two days ago and doesn't seem to have any issues with the toilet. He took to going on the toilet before I even stopped putting diapers on him. The problem is he pees in his pants just a tiny bit and then announces he has to go to the bathroom. There is no problem with #2. I feel like he is just being lazy and waiting until the last minute to go. But we are changing his underwear like 6 times a day. I have tried having a loving talk, rewards, books, making him keep the soiled undies on, going naked, timed bathroom breaks, etc. If anyone has ever experienced this or heard of a remedy please share.

What can I do next?

My only suggestion would be to schedule his potty times.. If he can only make it an hour before having a little accident.. then make him go every hour.

Hopefully you can gradually increase the time between potty trips..

It only took me 2 weeks to move my daughter from 1 hour potty time to the much more managable 2 hours..

A lot of kids do this that first year and you can suggest he go when it's been awhile. Other than that, I think he just has to grow out of it. I wouldn't make a big deal out if it, though it's very inconvenient. Carry extra clothes when you go out.

The only "remedy" is time... They need to learn to recognize that full feeling before its REALLY full...

Good job on your guy wanting to go before 3! Most boys don't hit the fully trained mark until closer to 3 1/2ish...

Does he have typical times he goes (after meals or large drinks?) Its up to us to keep reminding them and even if they say they don't have to go just tell him to go try to... And leaks happen... :-) Don't make a big deal out of it. Just remind him he has to go sooner...

I think it is amazing that you got him to train at this age, boys can sometimes be hard. This is a great testament to both of you! He is doing the best he can, it is very hard to recognize the urge, and then control it. Think of it as he is about 90% trained, and this is the last 10% hurdle he has to overcome. You could try scheduling him to go, like every hour, but if he doesn't handle that well and it becomes a fight, then just let it go, and as he grows his muscles will recognize the sensation. In the meantime, keep the past diaper bag filled with extra sets of clothes and underwear and plastic bags. Keep up the great work!

he will grow out of it. I know its hard but my guess is he doesn't really feel he has to go till its too late. In time he will. Probably another 6 months he will figure it out. How does he do at night?

Hello K., He is not able to prevent this right now. The fact that he stops as soon as he starts is a very good sign, it means he can control those muscles. It is just a matter of him learning to recognize his bodies urges, and responding to them directly, rather that having his potty times antisipated or timed by the clock. This is just a phase, it too wlll pass. Don't start a power struggle with him over this, or you will find all the positive work the you have already done will go down the tubes fast. He needs to keep getting your approval. You lucked out with not having all of the accidents in the beginning as he still was wearing diapers, so now that luck has worn out. LOL Hope this helps.
