Chicken Pox or Mosquito Bites?

My daughter has two red bumbs on the left side of her neck and I can't fiqure out if they are mosquito bites or the start of chicken pox. She had a chicken pox vaccination but these bumps don't look like a typical bug bite however it doesn't seem to bother her. She has been running a slight fever the last couple of days with a runny nose which has been clear. We were outside a few nights ago before 7:00 p.m. and the mosquito's were out and were back so that could very well be it. I don't see her scratching them...

What can I do next?

Hi Tiffany~

It could be a Mosquito bite or possible spider bite. I would keep an eye on them. If you want peace of mind, then I would go to your Ped. office and have the Dr. look at them!

You can get chicken pox after getting the vaccine. My brother can attest to that since two of his children did. I would google chicken pox or pictures of chicken pox and see if it looks the same. Chicken pox typically starts on the trunk of the body...mine when I was a kid started on my back and they itched. That is how my mother found them because I asked her to scratch my back. They typically look a little like a zit before they are scratched. They will start to appear all over the trunk then other areas if they are the pox.

If she has a runny nose and a slight fever I might think she's getting her two year old molars. Mine always ran a fever, had a runny nose, had the runs and even threw up on occasion before popping teeth.

They are mosquito bites I am pretty sure because Chicken pox starts on their trunk of the body and spreads that way. You would notice a lot more than 2 as well. Mosquito bites don't have to itch. Also, a lot of little ones have a slight allergy to mosquito bites. So, they get a lot bigger, harder bumps than adults do. My kids get these huge looking welts that look terrible. My older one is just now becoming less sensitive so his welts aren't as bad. Try putting some anti itch medicine on them or some benadryl cream on the bites and they should go down soon. The mosquitos are bad any time of day this year- especially if it's cloudy out. So, always use bug spray if you go out right now.

Mosquitos have been bad this year, and more since the flooding a few weeks ago. There is a huge difference between Chicken Pox and Mosquito bites. bites don't have to itch and she may not notice them. I'm sure she's fine. if you see the marks change then see the doctor.

Tiffany-
My almost 19-month old looks like he has chicken pox too. Only, I know these are mosquito bites. The mosquitoes are HORRIBLE in the last couple of weeks. Yesterday, for example, we went for a walk around the block (during the afternoon!) and you can just see the mosquitoes landing on him. They mostly get him on his face, neck & head because I don't like to use bug spray on him there nor is he wearing anything to cover him up. I swat them away, but sure enough, the next morning he will have red (pimple-like) spots if they were able to sit on him for even a second or two. Today he has one right between the eyes!!! I feel horrible -- I even saw the darn thing land on him there but I guess I was too slow. I never see him scratch though and they take about a week to completely go away. My son also had a fever & runny nose not long ago -- it was a definite cold that he had.
