Ideas for Mosquito Bites That Welt Up

hello ladies! my 1-yr old tends to welt up pretty badly from mosquito bites. I am wondering if anyone has some suggestions for how to prevent the bites in the first place (i've heard of the avon skin-so-soft but don't know any avon ladies to order it from), and also if you have any ideas on how to keep the welts from getting so large and to help them heal faster.
They don't seem to bother her at all, but they look aweful and once a mosquito finds her, they all eat on her and she gets them all over her body.

What can I do next?

I am allergic to insect bites too. I carry a Benedryl Anti Itch Stick and it works very well. You can get it at Wal-Mart.

We are dealing with this right now! My oldest ds and I get really bad welts from them, his even blistered. There are a few things that seem to work for us. Zyrtec and benadryl help with the itching and keep from getting worse. I use Benadryl cream and that seems to help his. A baking soda paste applied to it helps a lot! It dries it and relieves itching. I heard on tv that the inside of a banana peel helps relieve itching but I haven't tried it yet. Keep an eye on them for infection.

My son got this when he was little. He was allergic to the bites. Also the Dr. said that the more sugar he ate the more attractive he was to the bugs. Good luck.

Hi H. -

I can help with herbal remedies if you are interested. I work at Chakra Botanika in Payson and we have a Bug Away formula - in salve & spray - to keep the bugs off. We also have a salve with Plantain and other herbs in it to apply after one has been bitten. If you aren't anywhere near Payson, we can ship them to you or I can try and direct you to an herb store in your area.

Let me know if I can help.

Blessings,

I also welt up pretty bad from all types of insect bites and my son does as well. I found that rubbing alcohol on the bite dries it up fairly quickly and they stop itching almost immediately.

I haven't ever put insect repellents on my children, but I used Avon's Skin-so-soft as a child and I remember liking the smell. I can't remember if it worked or not,but it's worth a try.

My SIL does sell Avon, so you can email me direct and I'll give you that info, I know is ships straight to you. Also, just be careful that the bites don't get infected, my son's welt up really bad, I have had to draw a circle around the outside of the welt so that I could see if it grew and if it gets worse you may have to bring your little one into the pediatrician. Hope you find something that works for you.

A great prevention I use when we go camping. I tie a dryer sheet to my son, like on his belt loop. It is a great insect repellant. Simple and cheap. Good Luck.

Hi H.-

Bless your heart, I alweays wanted to stay home & do what you're doing, but it was difficult- Anyway, look in the health food or natural food stores for a natural product that doesn't have DEET for her. If she does get the bites, I use Camo-Care Soothing Cream. It seems to stop the itching. S.

My daughter really swells up from mosquito bites. She also has very sensitive, pale skin and has skin reactions for a variety of reasons. We are amazed at how well zyrtec works - it is also great for hives. I know the pills are over the counter now but I don't know about the liquid. You'd have to check with her pediatrician on dosage- I think my daughter was first prescribed it when she was two. It is a great product - after one dosage you wouldn't even know she had been bitten!

Okay, I am from the south and we are notorious for having home remedies, and I have used this one alot on myself. If you can get your 1 year old to leave it alone long enough....

Peel a potato, and scrap the inside a little with a knife. Then, put it on the bite, and wrap it tight with some type of bandage or some wrap, whatever you can find. Then leave it there for a little while, and the potato absorbs the poison from the mosquito, and the welt will go away. It worked for me everytime when I was little. Also, get dryer sheets and put them in their pockets, b.c mosquitos hate the chemicals on the sheets and will not bite.

I used to get horrible, itchy welts from mosquito bites and started years ago taking a B-complex vitamin to prevent that. I don't know if it acts as a deterrent, or they still bite me and I don't react, but I can be around mosquitos without the bite-welts anymore. HOWEVER... I wouldn't recommmend that for a baby or child without checking with their pediatrician first. I have heard that Listerine works great as an area repellant, like sprayed around the area, or poured into saucers left around your patio, etc. Again, I think that would be too irritating applied directly to the skin. Good luck, 'cause that's pretty miserable.

I am originally from Alaska where the state bird is the "Mosquito", actually it is the Ptarmagin, but there are more Mosquito's then birds at times. Once she is bitten there is a great ointment that you can put on. It has a slightly strong odor, but it works great. It is called "After Bite", they even have it it Children packaging, but my mom used the regular stuff on all 4 of her kids. You can find it at Walgreens or in sproting good sections.

Also, I used "Sun and Bug" on my little one. I didn't stick it on his arms, because he likes to suck his fingers and I didn't want it in his mouth. Works great on the legs and neck.

Hope you find something that works for you.

Hi H.- A couple of things. First, I am an AVON rep and would be happy to be your AVON lady should you decide to try the Skin so Soft repellents. You can shop on my website at www.youravon.com/tguenther. You also get a discount because you belong to Mamasource!
Also, I would recommend making sure that you are not "harvesting" mosquitos in or around your house. Make sure you have no standing water that they thrive in. If you have a relationship with your neighbors maybe you could ask them to check around their houses also. Good luck!

I do the same thing! If I get one mosquito bite, I get 100 and they welt up HUGE and turn dark purple. I am currently pregnant so I cannot use the traditional bug repellants with DEET. I haved used Skin So Soft before and it seems to work for me. Avon also has a skin so soft repellant with sunscreen in it that is great for kids. I know someone who sells AVON. She lives in Avondale and her name is Debbie. Click on my name above and email me if you would like her phone number.

Hi H.-
I know this will sound weird but it works....if you crack an egg and peel off the skin that is inside the shell and put that on the bite, then let it dry it will draw out the poison from the bite...it also works for spider bites..I also welt up pretty bad and have been doing this for years.

I read this thing how a penny can help a bee sting. So why not try it on a misquito bite. Just tape one on ober the spot for a few minutes. Also Dont let her eat bananas during mosquito season.

Hi H.,

Dryer sheets rubbed on the skin before she plays outside will keep the mosquitos from biting her and alittle bit of bleach on a Q-tip will dry them up in like 2 days. Make sure she hasn't scratched them open though before the bleach so it doesn't burn.

Hi,
I'll bet you're going to get swamped with Avon ladies. I'm one of them. Besides regular Skin So Soft, we have a specific product called Bug Guard that is to prevent mossquitos and other bugs from biting. It's on sale right now 2for $12. You can e-mail me directly or go to youravon.com/elaineburke and place your order there. If you order from the avon site they will deliver it directly to you. I should tell you that the Bug Guard does not have DEET in it so it is a safe product to use on your little one.
Thanks,
E.

Burt's Bees makes a FANTASTIC mosquito repellant! All natural essential oils and vit e oil. It comes in a metal can so the light can't get to it and oxidize the oils. My DD is also very fair and seems they just love her thin skin. I've heard of the dryer sheets and Avon's SSS, but haven't tried either.
As for itch relief, topical Benedryl works well without having the systemic effects of taking an oral antihistamine.
We also use Campho-Phenique, which is stinky because of the camphor but works well. My fav is my Grandma's remedy which is to make a paste with water and plain old meat tenderizer. All but the Benedryl cream can sting a very little bit if the welt has been scratched to the point where the surface skin has been broken.

We have been treating our daughter homeopathically for 4 years now and the homeopathic remedy we use to stop the itch of bites is Urtica. Hylands does an ointment stick called "Bug Bite" ointment. Homeopathy is very very effecitve with children and so very safe. http://www.amazon.com/Bug-Bite-Ointment-Ounce-Hylands/dp/...

You can get Avon products online. If you don't have access or don't want to go that route, there's a great product called Swy Flotter, by Kiss My Face. (They also make a sunscreen with the repellent.) There's no Deet. It's all natural. You can find it at stores like Sprouts or Sunflower Market. I've used both for repellent and both are great.

To help after...I've used Benedryl gel. I have pretty bad reactions to mosquito bites too, and when they get quarter sized, sometimes I get a sealable bag with ice for a few hours and then put on the gel.

Hope this was helpful...

hi, H.!

there are some great ideas here on the site, but i would be very wary of trying the bleach on the bite (very, very bad to put on the skin, just read the label)...or the dryer sheet on the skin as the majority of them have toxins in them that you really do not want to be absorbed into the skin. i am a melaleuca customer and there is a great gel called melagel that works amazingly quickly in reducing the swelling and itch associated with the bite. i was just stung by a bee on saturday when a bee got caught in my hair, and we applied melagel and couldn't find the bite two hours later (i usually puff up pretty significantly). we also mix some of the cleaning products that are non-toxic/child-safe and bio-friendly (we have a recipe) and use that to spray on all of our children (our youngest is 1, but we were able to used it on her even as an infant) on their skin and clothes and didn't have to worry about "washing off" when we came inside. it also prevents ants and bees from bugging you when you are outside. it also kills bugs inside the house. when we lived in colorado, we killed a centipede by spraying it on and placing a cup over it. it was awesome (and no horrible products like Raid to contend with anymore when i have an ant issue in the house!). if you are interested in the info on either, let me know!

have a great one!!

Hello H.,
There is a product I bought at WalMart that is used to cool burns, but it works on scrapes and insect bites too. It has aloe vera in it, and my kids always heal very quickly when I use it on anything. They also never scar when I use it, which is a bonus. I'm sorry that I can't remember the name of the product, but it is found with other burn creams and it is bright green! Good luck.

Hello-

The mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 she emits(hers is special)- and her white blood cells ARE "OVERREACTING" which makes the huge bumps. If she scratches they will get even worse looking (and the itch will be worse). I get the same thing as does my son.

It LOOKS much worse than it is but spray Benadryl or other anti-itch stuff works really well if you catch it quick and dont let her scratch. At 1 she's probably not coordinated yet to find the right spot but you'll have to watch out later on.

You can get one of those carbon emitting traps and turn it on about 10-15 min. before you go outside or use DEET free bug spray. Skin-so-soft only works on some biting bugs and only occasionally. Hardly works at all for me.

You can experiment making your own with natural oils (tea tree and peppermint works best I believe) but check with your pediatrician and the local heath food store about concentration and frequency. Get a spray bottle and add a few drops to water and make sure you spray her hair and clothes lightly too.

Good luck!

Avon can be purchased on line and there is a store in the Goodyear area. They have a sunblock that is also a bug repellent. Skin so Soft can be sprayed around you doors to keep the mosquitos from coming in,

Benedryl cream has worked well for me with my grandchildren for the bites.

Hi, there! If you don't already have an Avon lady, you can order 24/7 from my online store at http://www.youravon.com/sjohnson9852 and have products delivered directly to you. They are really great about offering free direct shipping on any $30 order, too!

My 2-year-old welts up pretty bad with mosquito bites also and I soak a cotton ball with distilled white vinegar and rub it lightly over the mosquito bites to stop the itching. The vinegar also works as a natural disinfectant, but the smell is not that great. I follow up with Avon Moisture Therapy Extra-Strength Cream for extra dry skin or with the Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Sensual Replenishing Body Lotion.

No matter what you do, the welts are going to take a few days to go down.

I just noticed the date on your original post and Avon has also come up with a Skin So Soft insect repellent since then which you could try also.

I hope this helps! :)
