Are you aware that Chicago has the shortest school day on record at 5 hours and 45 minutes?
How long is your child's school day?

7.5 for middle and high school. 7 for elementary.

Did you also know that Chicago school teachers get paid $71,000 a year, and they went on strike (in part,) because they thought an addition 16% raise...was not enough? Oh, and Chicago schools are some of the worst in the country, apparently. So WHY exactly, do they believe they should get paid MORE? They already are overpaid, in my opinion.

My middle school daughter goes for 7 1/2 hrs., and my 4th grader goes for 6 1/2 hrs. Did you also know (sorry if someone else has pointed this out) that Chicago teachers are paid insane amounts and the test scores of the students are among (if not) the lowest in the nation? I think that needs to be addressed more.

Don't get me started on Chicago schools. Again, full of corruption. These Teachers are the highest paid in the Country. They average $76,000 not including their Union benefits.

Good old Rahm Emmanuel will cave in of course. This means the entire state will have to pay for this pay increase for the Teachers. Just add it to all the new taxes coming in 2013 due to Obamacare (thanks Queen for the info).

A good portion of them don't even send their own kids to Chicago schools, they go to private schools. Chicago schools are terrible!!!!

Chicago schools are a joke just like our Politicians.

A suburb of Chicago, Lake Forest just went on strike too. They average $107,000. The P.E. teacher makes $168,000. This town isn't playing around. They hired outside help and have tons of parents coming in to take over. Hope this town doesn't cave like Rahm.

Have you ever heard of Rubber Rooms?

Stay strong Chicago Teacher's!!

I see the upper Mid West, as our American Arab Spring.

My kids are in School from 8:50am to 3:20pm

I praised god when I found out my 5 year old was going to be able to get all day without cost to the family.

I felt guilty knowing my oldest had full day, as will my youngest for being in SPED. My middle kiddo would have only gotten half day, had it not been for the right people getting together to make sure he was in full day.

Teachers need 100% of the american people. Private Sector Or not.

Our kids futures are not something to be fighting over. The future is happening right now. Before we literally give up on everything we built....Let's not through that last shovel of dirt on our coffins.

BAD TEACHERS CROWDED SCHOOLS BAD KIDS.

GOOD TEACHERS. GOOD KIDS.

MAKE OUR TEACHERS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE THE ONES TRULY LEADING AMERICA......WATCH US CHANGE THE WORLD.

My daughter is 3.5 and goes to a public preschool program for children with special needs for 6 hours a day Monday-Friday. I think the older kids go a little longer, but I couldn't tell you exactly how long. I do know that my daughter's teacher is amazing. She works very hard for the kids in her classroom. She is usually at the school working until 7 every night. She buys school supplies and snacks with HER own money and does not get reimbursed. She is the best special needs teacher at this school, was the one to found this program, has numerous degrees and still does not get paid what she deserves. I think this is true for many teachers.

(K-6) - 6 hours 35 minutes
Includes a 40 minute lunch & recess, plus a second 15-20 minute recess for the lower grades.

(7-9) - 7 hours 10 minutes
Includes a 25 minute lunch, no recess, 3-5 minutes between classes, 46-47 minute classes

(10-12) - 7 hours 17 minutes
Includes a 40 minute lunch, no recess, 5 minutes between classes, 51 minute classes

I'm not a teacher, nor is my husband. I'm an involved parent and volunteer in the schools and community.

I want to point out that terribly failing schools are often a result of a large number of failing *parents*. Teachers have no control over kids not showing up to class, refusing to do their work, living in poverty, having home life troubles, etc.

Someone mentioned the an outrageous $71k salary - considering the COL of the area, that isn't a lot of money.

My husband makes under $50k which is sufficient in the area that we live. We have a small home, one car, pay the bills on time. He was offered a job just outside the Chicago metro area, with a raise (to $54k) to go with it. When I looked at the COL difference, I realized to be able to live within a reasonable distance of his new workplace and maintain our modest standard of living, he would need an absolute minimum of $95k. He turned down the job.

Krista P.... the 5 hours and 45 minutes INCLUDES lunch time and recess, if the school has recess - if not they are supposed to get 15 minutes of TPE (Teacher directed Physical Education) each day!!!!!!

There are 180 school days for CPS. Which is an INCREASE of 10 student attendance days from last year.

New York Public Schools also has 180
LA has 175, but that is the result of a fulough decision to cut the budget.

My kids start school at 8:40 and go until 3:05. So....hold on a minute...that's 6 hours and 25 minutes....right?
But how many months do they go to school? We get out around June 20th and go back to school around Sept. 4th.

My son is in half-day kindergarten, which is about 3 hours and 15 minutes. When he 'ups' to full day, it will be six hours and 15 minutes. Upper grades (Grade 5 and up) run ten minutes longer at his school, which is a k-8

7, but if you factor in lunch and recess it's the same as the kids in Chicago. I think they have some funky "rotating day" schedule. I can't recall the specifics, but they have some kind of alternate schedule there.

6 hours and 40 minutes. WAY too long. My school day was 6 hours which was long enough to fit in plenty of learning, art, music, gym and recess. My son doesn't get home until 4 pm - soon it will be dark 30 minutes after he gets home. He gets 40 minutes a day to play outside during recess. I have no problem at all with a 5.75 hour school day.

7 hours exactly and we are in school 172 days our of the year. So there are 193 days (including weekend, holidays, and summer vacation). Personally I would want to go to 190-200.

I'm not going to get on my soap box.
