Chicago Public Schools Admission Letters

I just received the letter from CPS yesterday for my son who is going into kindergarten in September. We have been placed on the waitlist for three magnet elementary schools. All three waitlists are the "proximity" list. And we are numbers 1, 17 and 55. How likely is it that we will make it into the 17 and 55 list in your experience?
Also, we had applied to the classical program of our neighborhood school. But I didn't see anything about that on the letter. Does that mean that he wasn't accepted into that program or is another letter on the way for that notice?
Thanks for your help, as this is my first admissions process.

What can I do next?

Call the office that sent you the list. They will be able to answer your questions or refer you to someone who can.

smile, BTW, in my world CPS is Child Protective Services. I've not heard of the CPS you site, tho I suspect they stand for Child Placement Services. We have nothing like what you describe. Our kids go to the neighborhood school. No placement options.

We've never dealt with CPS personally...however, a good friend of ours used to sit on the board and suggested that you'll very likely get in for #1...just based on drop outs and tuition faults.
The others are unlikely.

Not sure about the classical program...I'd assume that might be a separate letter, if there was no mention of it in that communication.

I've found that every area is different. Friend of mine camped out to get her DD into a particular elementary school, while I have no wait for my DD's neighborhood school. We only have to wait out the lottery for the dual language program. So your best bet would be to call the school and ask. Or call the office that sent you the letter. I would think #55 would be unlikely.

I don't know anything about it - but how lucky you are to have these aducational options available to you! I know that the teachers unions here in NY have fought, tooth & nail against anything like Charter schools or vouchers - so we have only pulic school or expensive private schools as our options.

Why dont' you call them up - there has to be a phone number somewhere, no?

1, 17, and 55? Momma, you need to play the lotto. My worst was #275, my best? #50.

I don't know how you managed a single digit and two double digits, and even one low double digit, seriously - you are super lucky!

Also, classical/selective enrollment, assuming you took the test, will be mailed out today.

CPS = Chicago Public Schools, for those who don't live in the area...it's the process for getting into the public schools - not charter, but other specialty kind of public schools - magnet, for kids all over the city, and gifted/classical programs where you need to take a test. Neighborhood is an automatic in, but sometimes parents don't care for their choice (a lot of variance in school quality). Depending on the school, OP, #1 could be VERY good as well as #17. The classical letters should be in your mailbox either today or Monday - I'm waiting for one too! Good luck.

We got our letter for Kindergarten. We are #8, #170 and #230 for the three schools we wanted. #8 has a good chance of happening, but it was the third of three due to the long drive (and hour each way) so we will see. I heard there will be some re-zoning of certain schools too in May which may change my neighborhood school...UGGGHHHH!!! hopeful for the gifted letter this week, but i have heard that it is weighed for low income and minority students....do you know if this is true?
