We are doing our research on the CPS, but it seems like there are a lot of schools. Any input on what the best schools are in our part of the city? We are considering Gifted Centers, neighborhood schools with good academics and magnet schools.

So What Happened?

All, Thank you for your input. I did pick up the CPS guide. It's always nice to get some in depth info from mom's who have gone through this before you. So thanks again.

It gives the schools ratings based on performance from all over the country. I love it! This website really helped my husband and I pick neighborhoods where we would buy. Go with a school that has a 7 or above rating. I am a teacher and I would not go under a 7 rating.

Every winter, they publish a book with all of the schools and kindergarten options. you should be able to pick it up at your neighborhood school.
it's tough looking at cps. there are a ton of them, and most of the ratings are based on test scores, which don't necessarily tell you that a school has the qualities you are looking for. you can look at school report cards on the cps website to see test scores as well as statistics about class sizes, school population, etc. most schools also offer tours, so you might consider picking a few and going to visit.
best of luck to you.

Rogers Elementary, or Decatur Elementary....which I believe has a gifted program. They are located near Western and Toughy....little farther west then Western. I taught at Rogers for a semester before I went on maternity leave and loved it. Great staff, administration and kids!

Hi M.,
Farnsworth is definately one of the best. They have a dress code which I think is great. That's where my son went for preK. Also I've heard that Waters is pretty great. I think they're in Lincoln Square or Ravenswood manor. I'm not sure what the area is called that Farnsworht is in.
