Cheaper Pet Meds

Hi, Mamas,

I have a question for those of you with dogs. I am looking for a place to get less expensive, high quality pet medications. We just had to put our 8-year-old beagle on thyroid medicine. It looks like this could be an expensive habit, so I checked out the prices on some of the discount pet medicine websites. The price difference between my vet and the website is so great that I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Has anyone used a pet med website service? Did you notice any difference in the quality of the medication?

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I always order my pets medication online at 1-800petmeds.com. They are a very well known company and have high quality meds. I have used them for many years and my pets vet actually told me about them. I have never had any problems with them. I don't know if there are any other places to get a better price but the meds I order are much less expensive than I would pay at the vet.

Ask your Vet. Mine told me he would match the price on the Low Cost Websites if I purchased it from him.

The only thing I have really noticed differently when it comes to purchasing from your vet versus online is that most pharmaceutical manufacturers will not gaurantee your medications (efficacy, expiration, against adverse side effects) if they are purchased online because they do not sell directly to these websites. They are considered gray market medications. I personally have not been in the position where I have had to purchase long term medication from an online pet medicine website but I would make sure you are purchasing what you really want. And purchase with caution. Some vets will price match and if they do I would go for that.

If you are looking for cheaper options, look into local pharmacies (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc). Thyroid medication is usually much cheaper at these places.
I do NOT recommend purchasing online because you can not trust the sources (how the medication was made/handled/delivered).
Some of the pharmacies mentioned above also have a pet plan that keeps the cost of veterinary medications lower. And, always verify that the dose the pharmacy has dispensed is CORRECT. I see a lot of dogs being underdoses/overdoses because the human pharamacists are not used to the doses typically prescribed for dogs.

yes. we use 1800petmeds.com. Its good.

If you live near a Kroger, they fill pet prescriptions for $4 - 20. If the medicine is one that is also used by humans, many regular pharmacies like CVS will fill the prescription also. You just ask your vet to write out a prescription.

There is also a free discount med card that you can get and use for pet prescriptions.

I get my dogs heartworm and flea and tick from Joes Pet med. This company is out of Australia where they dont require your animals to have the yearly blood drawn for heatworm meds. We have 3 dogs 2 XL and 1 small and we pay about $300 for the years worth of meds that would cost us 2-3x that if we bought it from the vets. We have been using this site for over 5yrs and have never had a problem with them getting sick or having fleas/ticks. So I know the stuff works. We do have them checked for heartworm every 3yrs and vacc about that time too. I believe over vacc causes cancers and other heath problems. Our dogs are not around other dogs or wild animals so our risk is much lower. KEep looking into buying meds from another source the vets also have over head so they tend to bump up the prices too.

Most of the online ones do not get their medications from the companies that make them. This may be true for all thyroid medications, but at least heartworm medications were that way and the companies that make them will not guarantee them ( many times they are from other countries and you do not know if they were kept at the right temperature for shipping, etc. I know one person that was going to buy, but the picture they had with the price was of a box that the company had not made for about two years and it was from one of the reputable online pharmacies. Makes you wonder if that is what they were still mailing out.

For thyroid medication you can check with local pharmacies, but usually the dog dose is different than human dose. I have a hypothyroid dog and she has been on medication for 5 years for it. The first script is usually a small one so that the blood levels can be retested to make sure they do not need to change the dosage. Once your dog is going to be on the same dosage ask about a larger quantity depending on what you usually get at a time. There is usually a pharmacy fee and then the cost of the pills, so a larger quantity means fewer pharmacy fees. . Soloxine is slightly more expensive if that is the thyroid mediation your beagle is on.

Find a reputable pet medicine website to order your pet's medication. My vet encouraged me to do so when our dog had to have expensive medicine that he did not stock in his office and provided the prescription i needed to the pharmacy. The prescription was mailed to my home. The cost of dispensing from a vet's office includes a mark up on the drugs. Most offices do not do a high enough volume to get big discounts from pharmacy wholesalers (vs a commercial pharmacy like WalMart, etc.

I use to order my meds from Canada. Never buy them at a Vet office. Always order online.
