My daughter had a wig that looked hideous until I put a headband on top of the wig. It ended up looking so real.
It looks like it's been burned. It came out of the package like this. All the kids wigs are like this but the adult sizes are luscious and pretty. The bangs are squished up and wrinkled, the back is frizzy looking like it got zapped with static electricity or something.
I need some ideas of how to make it look presentable for a 3 minutes number during recital and in the pictures which will be quite expensive. I won't be able to afford them but I'd still like her to look nice since they make a photo album of all the poses for the owners of the business.
I thought maybe brushing with a natural bristle brush wet with hair spray, get it just right then let it dry. BUT then what happens when you try to put it on.....
What about a blow dryer on low, will it soften the plastic like hair enough to make it pliable and where it will hold a style? At least where the bangs will lay down?
Get it wet, make it how I want it then let it dry? Condition it? Fabric softener? Dryer sheets? WHAT??????
It's this wig so we can't do too much to it, the more it's messed with it seems the worse it looks.

I got a wig head and a wide tooth comb. I used some sort of conditioner on it and it looked okay. I used hairspray today when she put it on and it smoothed out a bit and looked presentable for the stage. Up close it still looked pretty bad but from any sort of distance it was just fine.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!

Depends on the wig itself, most that I work with you can do almost anything to with no worries, all heat on low. My biggest suggestion would be to take it to a wig shop or a store that deals with wigs - they should be able to help you.
Yipes. The braids limit your options even more. You might try asking a costume store. Other than that, yeah, I'd try wetting it and drying it with a blow dryer. I do use conditioner on my paint brushes but I don't really know the texture of the wig. Might try streaching it over a bare bulb but try a little at a time!
i used fabic softner on an am girl doll. didn't really work but I think i would try that again over a blowdryer. you run the risk of the glue that holds it to the Head part loosening. good luck.
We've had similar issues with dance costume wigs.
If there aren't any curls you can use a clothes steamer. You need a wig head to keep the wig on, use wig pins to hold the wig to the wig head. You can find wig heads at wig stores or Hobby Lobby.
Using any type of iron can melt the strands. Only clothes steam will work, or you can use the steam from your iron so long as you're very careful not to touch the iron to the wig or get it too close!
Secure the wig to the wig head and use a brush with METAL bristles. Never use plastic bristles on fake hair. A combination of the steamer and brushing with the metal brush will get the bangs to lie down.
Otherwise use HOT water in a water bottle and mist on the wig. Use the metal brush again.
Fabric softener can make the smell on the wig very strong so be careful!
You may need to trim the wig as well after brushing and steaming.
Another resort would be to put the wig in a steamy shower, and then try to brush it.
Good luck! My daughter had a wig she needed for 3 competitions and 3 performances and by the 4th performance that thing was a mess. I used a steamer to keep it looking nice (and I trimmed the ends to be even because they become uneven when you brushed it). I really never want to deal with wigs again! LOL!
There is special wig conditioner. Do NOT brush your wig whatever you do. My daughter has been dancing for 7 years and we have had several wigs...do not brush it.
Get the conditioner and use a wide tooth comb. Also buy a manicane head ($4) so you can lay it out all the time instead of it being laid out messy.
